It was by pure chance that Jamie W and I discovered this fascinating bookstore. We were taking the…read morepublic bus toward Belem and got off early to see a piece of street art that intrigued me online, 'Bumblebee' de Bordalo II (Photo 2). I didn't know it was in a retail industrial complex called LX Factory. This bookstore is part of that complex, and it immediately drew us in with its 45-foot high ceiling. The walls are covered almost to the maximum height with bookcases. There's a collection of over 40,000 new titles and nearly 10,000 second-hand books, and the cavernous warehouse layout allows room to browse easily. In fact, the name directly translates to "Read Slowly". Narrow catwalks and staircases connect the two tall floors of books, and suspended in the air is a white cyclist kinetic sculpture. Up on the second floor mezzanine is an extensive music section and also gallery spaces for temporary and permanent exhibitions. Loads of framed posters, prints and lithographs cover the walls, and there are rows of retro mood lamps for sale. The bookstore has been around since 1999, and while most of the books are in Portuguese, there's a decent, curated selection of English titles. RELATED - Exploring Lisbon?
