The tram tour was a too long, with too much talking and information from the guide. The indoor museum was crowded and had a bottle neck. But this was an interesting visit with a descent into the crater of a volcano that had been used as a quarry for about 50 years. Highlights: walking around the crater and noticing the variations in the soil, gravel, and vegetation. The two films at the end (a 4-D and a train ride simulation), walking along the rickety old mining equipment catwalks. The kids loved going crazy in the bounce house. If there is a way to take a self guided walk, I recommend that. There are also illuminations and events in the evening to check out. read more

We were going to the area that has some of France's only volcanoes. I was really hoping to take…read moreeveryone on a hike but everybody else wanted to go to to Vulcania so Vulcania it is. We had a lot more fun than I expected in a place that ended up being more museum than amusement park. They've got a couple "rides". The little bit of movement coordinated with action on a big screen type of "ride". They've also got several walk through displays about vulcanism and fossilization and they've even got a recreation of a mastodon found only in this region. Rent the headsets!!! The audio tour is offered in four or five languages and there's an enormous amount of information in the recorded segments that's not offered in the printed displays, even the displays in French. The sandwiches at the snack place downstairs were awesome and they sell beer there too! And when you think the fun's all done you get to walk through one of the most beautiful forested parking lots I've ever seen. GO!

Review # 1200 I…read morenever really gave a shit about review #1000 but this one seems kind of memorable to me. Big open square that serves as the central business and shopping area of Clermont. I walked across the square every day for my month in Clermont. Place de Jaude serves many a purpose. I've witnessed the day of music open air concert here. Also when ASM Rugby was in the semi finals it got pretty lively one night outside the Australian pub. Place de Jaude is where much of the action happens in Clermont. Around the square there are many restaurants that have terrace (patios) that spill out onto the action. There is also quite a fair amount of shopping. The city of Clermont does do a very good job of keeping this place clean. There is usually street cleaners out early in the AM. Saturday is the day whereby Jaude is hopping full of people. Sunday you could fire three cannonballs down here and hardly hit a person. I've walked through here in good weather and in rain. At early morning and at night. There is a type of charm to Place de Jaude. Sure there may be some sketchy individuals asking for money (politely say no and they leave you alone). It's akin to the open squares in Rome. Through day and night there is usually some sort of action. They also serve as the main square's of life and activity. Live it love it experience it!
