Remember when going to the mall was the thing you wanted to do after school and on the weekends? I'm giving Sycamore 3/5 because I know what it once was. It's a pretty desolate place these days. Movie theatre, hobby shop, toy collectibles shop, taekwondo lessons, and what else I'm not sure. As long as the theater doesn't do anywhere I think the few remaining business can survive. If the theater closes I'm afraid it will be the same for everyone else. Definitely check it out for the theater, hobby shop and the shop that has all of your favorite childhood toys and collectibles. Or if you want to remember what it felt like to shop something pre Coral Ridge.

There is a brewery (Backpocket), bars (30hop, Athletic Club), Italian (Marquee), Asian (Hokkaido Ramen, Komoni), Mexican (Blue Agave), sweets (Scratch, Cookies & Dreams) and more! The Crown Jewels IMO are: Xtreme Arena, Trader Joe's and Von Maur. Additionally, as a local, I appreciate the University of Iowa Hospitals location that lives here-- as it allows me to avoid the main hospital. Currently there's construction nearby which can be frustrating. Parking can also be confusing during busy times-- my go-to lot is just outside of Backpocket! The IRL is super walkable and offers something for everyone.

Ten Thousand Villages is a fabulous retail spot to support. While the store has over a hundred locations in North America-- they do fair trade right. Every handmade purchase directly impacts the life and community of its maker in a developing country. I hopped on their site one day during quarantine to shop with my mom in mind. The site is so, SO easy to navigate. There's a Gift Finder tab that I found extremely helpful. I opted for the Recycled Sari Flowers. No two flowers are entirely alike due to them recycling fabric. They were made in Bangladesh. (My mom does NOT have a green thumb. I feel like fabric flowers will be welcomed.) On the site, you get to see a blurb about the maker of each item. It makes you feel good to see who you're supporting with your purchase. Shop Ten Thousand Villages for any gift giving you may have. Whether it is during social distancing on their site, or at their store in the ped-mall. It is a literal treasure trove.

I would describe Revival as a Vintage Boutique that buys and resells thrifted and new items + home goods (candles, room sprays, incense) It's been about five years since my return and oh how things have changed! I'll start with the positive first: they now sell sex toys and lube (Maude brand) which is super cool. The candles they sell are so unique and well crafted. What a creative idea to use old fish tins for the base! The not so good: in summary everything's extremely overpriced. Revival use to be more of a thrift store (and yes they still buy and resell thrifted items) but now a large selection of their items are new and well over $100. Mind you this is not a luxury store. Now, I will say Revival has always carried new items and more "high quality pieces" however, today I saw a "preloved" coach bag for $300+ which was insane to me. The selection of clothing is more neutral and basic tones like cream, nude, brown and white. I miss the color and variety that use to be! Today I purchased some groovy sunglasses, vintage Levi Jeans, and some other new goodies. I still love this place and will check it out again the next time I'm in town!
