Now that I've been working three miles from this Vons for a little over two years, it's my go to after a long day of work for quick shopping. I don't recommend going into this store before 8-830pm. Busy can't even describe what this staff is all day long. After 8-9pm, which is when I get off work, it's not so crazy busy, but the staff working the floor are stocking the shelves, endcaps, and coolers, and have their pallets of freight in the middle of the aisles. Or they're front facing the stock on the shelves already. But if you need help, these guys will help you and not make you feel like an interruption of their work flow (unlike floor crews at other places, like the one that starts with w and ends in mart) The just for u app is a must have and I would recommend anyone who shops at Vons, Albertsons, Safeway, etc to get this app and start saving a ton of money, get personalized pricing on stuff you buy a lot of me (for me that's Kombucha, peanut butter, garlic, ice cream. Although I buy a lot of wine, they haven't gotten that personal yet lol) and get free stuff and gas points to use at Vons and Chevron. NOTE: THIS REVIEW IS NOT FOR THE GROCERY STORE VONS, BUT RATHER FOR THE DELI OF EVIL THAT IT HOUSES. The grocery store is great. five stars. The deli sucks arse. I said to myself, "Oh Vons is such a great grocery store, and I love deli sandwiches, maybe I'll grab one here on the way out." BAD IDEA. I made my way over to the deli, and there's this neato automated sandwich ordering system, which gives you all your options and lets you pay right there at the kiosk- "Neat!" I said, "now I know they'll get my order just right, oh boy!" I went through the system, got my receipt, went to buy my groceries, and came back for the sandWITCH. I ordered a turkey avocado sandwich, on "artisan" bread, with bacon, tomato, onions, and ranch spread. That sounds pretty good right? Like it should be both edible and satisfying, right? Nay, I was sorely disappointed. I was given my sandWITCH by what looked like two schmoes who were behind the counter and I can't describe exactly what it was, but they just looked like they couldn't care less about their work and were just there for the eight-an-hour. A dubious beginning, but I hoped for the best. I went home, put my groceries away, and took my sandWITCH out to the park. "Ah, a sunny day, a sandwich in the park on the grass with a book and a coke, how nice," I thought. No. Upon the unwrapping of this beast, I found myself slathered in copious amounts of green goo, apparently posing as avocado (extra $.75 or so, by the way). "Gah, what is this vile slime?!" I wiped off my hands and, still holding onto faith, took a bite. " OW! Frick! I think my teeth just fell out!" The "artisan" bread had to have been three days old at least, no way something solidifies like that "fresh out of the oven." I tried to pull the crust of of the bread, now holding a mutilated, oozing corpse of a sandwich and took another bite, hoping the turkey and bacon would have redeeming qualities. First, the "ranch spread" hit me. Not ranch-y and good at all, but thick like cream cheese and foul tasting like a stranger's foot in your mouth might be. Then, the crunch and woody taste of a white and green under-ripe tomato, complete with the stem button-thingy (no exaggeration here), made me spit out the despicable mass that I had voluntarily put in my mouth! I opened the sandWITCH to find that, to top it all off, the "bacon" that I had paid extra for was nothing more than two spindly, flaccid, pieces of lunch meat fat that someone decided was worth bestowing the great name of "Bacon" on! Fully depressed, and without anything even resembling a sandwich to take back to Vons and ask for some compensation for, I balled up the vile mass, downed my coke in an attempt to escape that "ranch" funk, and packed up and left the park, depositing it in the first can I came to. My heart breaks for the scavenger that might have found it in there and thought it might make a meal. Vons deli, you took my seven dollars and broke my heart. read more

Heading out to Vons on Christmas day, BIG MISTAKE. This was apparently the place to be on Christmas Day in San Luis Obispo. The longest lines I have every seen in Vons before and no attempt to alleviate the crowds. Who knew that San Luis Obispo residents love to shop at Vons on Christmas to the point it was packed. The store was way understaffed and I blame the management, not the poor souls that had to deal with the odd crowd on Christmas. And if your into people watching and though WalMart was the place to go, wrong...head into Vons on Christmas...it was one Motley Crew. read more

Rude inattentive deli. There is no line, people just everywhere and you don't know how to order or really what to do. They need more help or to be better organized. A big suggestion also would to care higher quality deli meats like Ralphs does. read more

I have always loved Vons. They have great produce and usually a friendly staff. I work in the customer service industry so I always give people the benefit of the doubt. I have gone to this Vons several times and the deli counter is ridiculous. The employees are rude and unprofessional. They seem miserable and they seem to hate their job. I think that they are lucky to have a job in this economy and should treat their customers like people and not like annoying rats that have interrupted their facebook time. I work right down the street and I drive across town during lunch hour to go to the Albertsons on Foothill. I know work isn't always your favorite place, but you shouldn't take it out on the customer who is just hungry and wants lunch. read more

Since I was in town I decided to stop here to get some of my grocery shopping done. I would normally go to Ralphs but Vons had some deals I wanted to get. First off the store is well stocked. But the customer service is the worst. I had some heavy items in my cart and when I went to check out the cashier didn't bother to bag or put anything in my cart. Really? So I had to do all myself and will doing so she tells me "don't hurt your back" are you serious? i get much better customer service at Albertsons and Ralphs. Will avoid next time. read more

I never write Yelp reviews but I think this is pretty important so nobody else wastes their time and money. Their customer service was rude and not helpful at all, we've been ordering our groceries by curbside pickup or delivery due to my health and to be safe, yet when I've selected for Vons NOT to substitute my items they always seem to give me $10-$20 worth of food I will not eat and DID NOT ORDER??? And when I called to ask why this has happened to me - not once but three times- Lesley (?? She mumbled her name) at customer service told me she doesn't know and it happens to other customers all the time and to just come back in and return it at the front... well that would've been great to know beforehand that they disregard their customers notes and spend their money with out permission. the whole point of picking up curbside is to NOT go in the store and since I'm at risk health wise I'm uncomfortable doing so. Do better Vons... never returning to this chain ever again due to the customer services.. and to add to my note, when we picked up our groceries TONY haphazardly threw my food in the trunk.. at least I didn't have eggs this time cuz they would've been broken. And the produce they picked for me had mold and brown spots on it... wish I took a picture before throwing it out... extremely dissatisfied and disappointed with this company and all of its employees. read more

I've only had one rude cashier at Vons in about ten years that I've been coming there. I love the managers, they always say hello and ask about my day or what I've been up to. The only thing is that the store is slowly changing. The first thing I noticed is that the lines are super long, day or night, you're going to wait. I've learned not to go when I'm in a rush because over the past 4-5 months they have less and less cashiers and crazy long lines. I don't blame the staff because I found out that they are cutting back on hours (damn corporations). They seem to keep it together in all the chaos and keep things moving as fast as they can. I also love the fact that they hire people with special needs and disabilities; which are some of the sweetest and hard working people there! I live "across town" (it's literally ten minutes, but people make a huge deal about driving that far from Cal Poly to Vons) and it's well worth it. I have enjoyed going to the deli, they're fast and overall very consistent, but they could take it easy on the mustard ;) I'm sad to learn that you can't build your own sandwich anymore, they only have pre-made sandwiches you can chose from (went in today and it's not an option anymore). I guess I won't be returning to the deli anymore but for everything else I'll keep shopping here. read more

What a sad deal. This store is close to my house but is declining every time I visit. They are regularly out of items, the deli is a joke and it takes forever to checkout. Their meat selection is mediocre and prices are sky high if you don't buy what's on sale. Always accommodating! Wether for special orders or by purchasing more handicap electric carts so that their disabled customers, like me, can shop with ease. They're so friendly and helpful from the store managers like Tim right down to the the workers like Mark that always help me with my big soda purchases to stock our personal soda vending machine. Their green grocers keep their produce department stalked with the freshest fruits and vegetables. Always a wide variety with lots of organic choices. The checkers always have a friendly word to say & make you feel more like a friend than a customer. Several names come to mind, like Ann Marie, Sue, Tony & many others. Vons is a very clean store. I wish it was less expensive I love the Von's deli sandwiches. ....And that is what this yelp is mostly about. My husband once again talked me into sandwiches even tho I'm not too much of a fan. The large sandwiches are $5.99 or $8.99. Huge portions .. Next time I'll get 1/2. Great store to shop at. We have a great variety of food and drinks. You can do all your shopping here. We have Starbucks, Wells Fargo, a pharmacy, and dry cleaning. The bakery and deli have wonderful food. We slice the meat and cheese fresh for the customers in the deli. If you have any special orders with how you want your meats and cheeses cut, please call it in ahead of time so we can have it ready for you. read more

One of the more convienent Vons I've been to in quite some time. Wish the ones in the LA area were still this enjoyable to shop in. The selection of local artisan products and craft beer has gotten alot better. They also close well after 11pm which allows for a less crowded experience. This review is for the Sandwich Deli within Vons. Any other reviews on Yelp for the deli prior to October 2012 should be ignored, as the significant changes within the deli has clearly impacted the quality of the deli. It is simply not the same experience or product that it once was prior to the changes. Used to be one of the best deals on this side of town until Vons corporate removed the Sandwich Ordering terminals and replaced them with a paper form. The form is quite confusing, causing more confusion than anything. It lists pre-designed sandos and custom made ones - which no one is ever sure if you're supposed to mark your changes to you want to pre-designed or mark all the ingredients you want. There's no clear and consistent instructions. Neither the customer or the staff understand the form, and is interpreted differently by each staff member - making it almost impossible for you to order and get the right sandwich. I've even given them a couple of weeks and a half a dozen visits to get this ironed out and still I see no signs of improvement - actually it seems to be getting worse. I now suggest going further down the street to Subway where you might get a mediocre sandwich for the same price, but it will at least be made accurately. Or you could go across the street to the Edna Valley Market - where you can pay more $$$ and get a relatively decent gourmet sandwich. read more

I love going to Von's over Ralph's any day of the week. The employees are usually friendly, interactive, and helpful. Today I had a very bad shopping experience due to an old decrepit, demented senior lady! I won't mention the details other then how rude and inappropriate this senior lady was towards me. My complaint is seeing I wasn't in the wrong I think the lady should have been escorted out of the store or have the police contacted. I was afraid if I continued my shopping that I would be bombarded and harassed by her again so I immediately went to check out and informed my cashier of the situation he sees me often and reassured me the old decrepit demented senior lady was definitely in the wrong so I appreciated his kind words towards me seeing as I am a frequent shopper ther and am appalled at how I was treated by this particular patron. When I lived in SLO, I drove all the way across town to Von's, despite the fact that I lived right across the street from an Albertson's. It's clean, its employees are so friendly, it there's always good stuff on sale (e.g. microwave pizza!). They also have a Starbucks and a Wells Fargo, where I used to work. I enjoy shopping at Vons. I save money and the store has a nice selection. The staff is helpful, efficient, and kind. A+ in my book.

All in all, better than average. Friendly staff that is generally helpful. Sometimes they carry items and then those items will disappear for weeks on end. No real explanation as to why. Meat selection is pretty good, for a grocer. Produce is generally freshish. Farmers market if your looking for great, but all in all I'm generally happy with what they have and at the price. You can find good deals here, but that's to be expected with a chain grocer. As I said, better than average. read more

I used to come to the deli here almost every day. The deli staff was friendly, personable, accommodating - they even remembered "my usual" order with all it's modifications. Lately though, due to some apparent turnover, the staff is now composed of people who must have been fired from the DMV for being too rude. They are dead-eyed nightmares of uninterested, condescending, bored customer "service", secure in the knowledge that they don't have to be nice to customers, because Vons can't go out of business like a regular sandwich shop. (Carol is awesome though, shout out.) They've lost me as a customer permanently after today's shocking service. Real shame. read more

Being a college student with absolutely NO money, Vons is my go to store to find all my groceries. They have everything I could need with the best sales in town. Even though it's not as close to Poly as other stores, I always go here for the best prices and higher quality produce. Plus the employees are so nice and helpful :) read more

Grocery prices are more expensive for most boxed and canned goods than other stores, but not as bad as Scoari's. The customer service staff at the front are DELIGHTFUL and helpful and friendly with Money Orders and Dry Cleaning. All my experiences have been great and I never felt ignored like at a lot of places. Great staff! read more

So. . .I have had less than positive experiences on multiple occasions ordering cakes/cup cakes from the bakery @ Vons. Today, however, beats them all. Typically you have to work pretty hard to make an order (like being told by the deli people to just go back into the baking area) or come back later (as if that works for anyone's schedule - yea I will just keep going back to Vons as my daily workout). Today - back story I emailed a photo as directed by a Vons associate so I could get the photo put on a cake. I then went to Vons to place the order with a live human person, ready for pickup on a specific day/time. I called the morning of the pickup day only to be told - I had not ordered a cake and there was no email. Funny thing - once I was angry they miraculously found the email just not the actual cake order. This was for a pretty big milestone birthday and now I am going cakeless. Shame on Vons. Only writing this because this happens regularly but today was important to me (and the rest of my family actually). read more

We have consistently shopped at this Vons and it is always well stocked and clean. In particular, the staff is very helpful and you see the same regulars which means they are experienced and knowledgeable. Some of the great employees include Mark, Donna, Michele, Salome, Nancy and many others. Recently Billy in the wine department went above and beyond and got a full case of a favorite wine for me and had it waiting at the front desk for me to pick up. Great service! read more

Just had a terrible experience at this store. My wife shops there regularly. I went today to pick up a few things, on my way out I went by the flower stand and decided to take some bundles of flowers home to my wife. I pick out the flowers went to the flower counter and asked if I could pay for them there. The lady working there said that she had to go to the back of the store. She obviously did not want to wait on me. Very humiliating experience. Needless to say put flowers back and left the store. Will try to find other places to shop when convenient. read more

I would drive across town to go here until I moved next door. Store isn't as crowded as everywhere else, mainly because it's bigger. Place is much larger than the other stores and has more selection and parking lot is big and makes sense. Great deli at this location by having a kiosk to order sandwiches on and they always have lots of employees working. Also has a full service Wells Fargo inside if that's your bank. Prices seemed more reasonable here too, especially on sale items and alcohol. read more

I give this Von's one star because I was not able to shop there today due to the lines. I use this store frequently for certain items and am accustomed to the typically long lines, but today I walked in for a few things and the entire check out zone was filled with anxious looking people. there were 3 lanes open. if this wasn't such a common occurrence I could shrug it off, but it is. the unfortunate employees have to deal with the frustrated customers. this poor management staffing approach makes this store the last choice of the local markets. read more

I shop here every week because it is the closest location to my home, but it also a lot nicer than Ralph's. They have a great selection of everything I need (produce, meat, bakery, deli, etc.). The new meat/seafood counter is really nice and the guys working there are always funny. The deli counter can be pretty slow, but the staff is always pleasant. There can be long lines at the busiest times (Friday evening, Sat/Sun afternoon), but the cashiers work as fast as they can and still make an effort to get your order correct. read more
