I happened to be in the area and wanted to try this donut shop. What really drew me in was rye pink color on the building. Since I'm not the biggest fan of donuts with any type of filling I purchased a cinnamon and sugar donut. It was just okay. Nothing I'd come back for but I wanted to give this location a shout to for the amazing customer service of Zack. Yesterday was National Donut day and so I brought my coworkers a dozen donuts for our last day of work! Summer break has finally arrived and this was such perfect timing. $12 for a dozen with one additional for free!!! I live 3 mins away and so this location is my location! Service was great by the morning staff and at first they thought I was another customer by the same name but different spelling. As they were loading donuts I noticed they were not mine, they apologized and mentioned it was such a coincidence. Welp, the other customer, Sara arrived and we had a laugh and greeted each other. Oh my. This was not what I remember the caliber of a Voodoo Doughnuts to be. We brought people from out of town as I wanted them to have the best donuts in town and this is not it. The place looked rundown and empty. The floors were sticky. The bathroom smelled soooo bad that it was hard to eat my doughnuts afterwards. The display case had very old donuts in it that were extremely unappealing. The table was dirty. The AC was practically nonexistent and we were sweating. Every once in awhile, my sweet tooth kicks in and one of my favorite comfort sweet treats is a good ole donut. Voodoo is my late night option when the cravings hit. Bonus is that they are open 24 hours. When Voodoo decided to come to Houston, they started at this location. Now there are two other locations as well. The lot is small here, but they do have a drive thru. I always go in so I can see all the creations in person. Customer service is hit or miss depending on when you come in. This is an in and out kinda place in my opinion so it's whatever. As far as variety, this place has the craziest donut creations. You can get a voodoo doll donut, a maple blazer blunt or even a cock n' balls. Not sure what that taste likes. You also have vegan options here as well. The donut flavors are on a menu on the outside and then you place your order inside. They have a few different dozen options but you can mix them. If you aren't at dozen but close, I'd recommend ringing the donuts up separately and doing a price comparison to see if makes sense or get the dozen. The cashier was helpful in guiding our decision since we weren't right at a dozen. The inside was cute. I really loved the decor and all of the small touches that really leaned into the theme. When I used to live in Austin, there was a newly built Voodoo Donut location just 10 minutes from me, now that I'm back in Houston, all of the locations are pretty much far out so that means that I am not able to frequent it as much as I would like. I prefer this location because of the accessible drive-through. The other locations in Houston are walk-in. However, the drive-through speaker sucks. They either can hear you or they can't. You can scream and they still will say that they can't hear you. They should get that thing fixed. Now, I come here because of the vegan donut options. It is not easy to find vegan donuts in Houston. It is pretty hard because not a lot of places serve vegans as well as non-vegans. My favorite donuts to get are maple bar and maple creme. They are so sweet and hit the spot every time. I have heard of them before but this was my first time here so wanted to satisfy our sweet tooth. the staff was very friendly and helpful when asking questions, we did get some recommendations from the staff, we did enjoy the slow spinning display of donuts which had many options to choose from. we have tried the dirt, homer, glazed, m&m cake, sesonal dashing pumpkin. they were all good very good flavor id say out of all the donuts we tried the classic glazed donut was our favorite. I feel like these donuts are more on the heavy side of dough, would of prefer them to be a bit more lite and airy, same with the cake donuts we tried they were a bit cakey and a bit too much on the toppings. again good flavors on these donuts I just feel they could of been a lighter and fluffy. they did not have coffee available and they did not have ice coffee which was a bummer to me, I would of loved some brew with my donuts. they did offer coffee in a can but that didn't sound good to me. so we settled for water and chocolate milk as our drinks, I wish there was was. more drink options for to pair with the donuts. Interior is the typical modern look that's in right now. Actual donuts: going for the cute, instagrammy, look based plan rather than the fantastic homemade feel that I feel like is more important. A few other donut shops inside the loop do a much better job providing tastier and better bang for the buck options which may not be as flashy of the options at Voodoo. Service We were greeted upon entry and able to order, I requested the Apple Fritter. I would at lease hoped for a little more care in the packing. The doughnuts, are just OK, they look incredible, but they do not actually taste as good as they look. You're likely better off at Shipley's is you're looking for a "good" tasting doughnut in Houston. However, If you seek an edgy hipster like appeal, Voodoo has it covered. The staff is great they are knowledgeable on their product, but bias towards its actual quality. The doughnuts in my opinion are over priced, $4-5 per is a bit much when you realize you just bit into a semi stale, semi hard food that clearly is not as fresh as it claims to be. I've tried at all times of the day to get the best most fresh ones and they are mostly always the same.
