Not very many staff so there are always a lot of ques. The screens are great, you really do get the best view (vue) in town.

Then it fell into disrepair and became a place you dared your mates to break into during the late 1980s after school had finished. Now, The Rex (as all good cinemas should be called) has been restored to its former glory. When I say former, think 1930s Art Deco, plush red seating, original projector and art house matinées. The place is a treat and a MUST visit for any cineophile. Prices are reasonable (approx £7 at time of writing) but availability is tough. You need to quick on the phone as it seems every person in Berkhamsted is a paid up member. Before each performance (and they are performances!) you can relax in the lobby where there are books on film to paw over or head down stairs and grab yourself a beer or a glass of wine. It's that sort of place. Do make sure you get to your seat in time for the traditional, and I found informative, pre film introduction from the Manager, James. A proud, curious creature James embodies the character behind this most charming of movie houses.

This is more of an experience than a simple cinema, and seems hugely popular book in advance.

What a wonderful way to spend an evening!…read more Two films (usually with a theme running between them) for £7.50. SEVEN FIFTY!! Last night's was a Joaquin Phoenix double bill, showing Walk The Line followed by Two Lovers. While we ended up skipping the first film and just having dinner, the price is still very reasonable. We shared a lovely bottle of wine outside on the terrace (had to sit on the wall though as all the tables were full) with amazing views of the river and Hammersmith Bridge. Back inside for dinner, which we shared: a large mezze platter and some mushroom bruschetta, both of which were delicious and just enough. The cinema itself is what every cinema should be: small and dark, with the seats on an incline so everyone can see. They showed the previews and ads WAY before the start time (PERFECT!!), even drew the curtains in between the previews and the film itself (DRAMATIC!!). Riverside has much more to offer than just a restaurant and a cinema... it also shows stand-up comedy, has a fully functioning tv studio where they film live shows, a theatre for live music, and art exhibitions. A wonderful space with quality at every turn.

We went to see 500 Days of Summer (also excellent by the way!) and I gasped out loud as I walked into the Screen. It was HUGE! The screen was tremendous and there were approx a gazillion seats. Lovely, modern, clean, wonderful image quality, superb audio. Tremendous all around. I am not sure if it was due to the quality of the film or the superiority of the cinema design but despite the size it was a very intimate and personal experience. Sweet popcorn was great too. (Yes the cardboard style popcorn, whatever! Judge me :) ) I wish it was nearer London but as I often travel to Oxford I'll be making a stop here on my way past as often as I can. Due to being in the Eden shopping centre there are plenty of restaurants, shops & starbucks about too... ps. I had a hotdog!! I hadn't eaten for ages and the staff looked like they could do with some help meeting their sales targets. They were nice. Ok I had two but I don't recommend them cause I was too hungry to be a fair judge.

It also has cheap Tuesday tickets and an unlimited scheme when for £12 a month you can see as many films as you like. As it has 12 screens it shows a really good choice of films with lots of showings every day. The food is pricey as it is in all cinemas but no one forces us to buy it. Unfortunately you do have to pay to park but it is cheaper after 6pm.

You can watch a film without a child kicking the back of your chair or throwing popcorn about the place and you can get drinks and bar snacks served right to your seat. Brilliant! A great place to come with a date as the double-seats mean you can snuggle up to that special someone. Next time I want the even more luxurious seats at the back which looked more comfy than the average ones and I believe may even have had foot rests. A full bar and decent selection of sweet and savoury snacks. I love a glass of wine with my film so this place gets a huge thumbs up from me on that alone. It is expensive, but no more expensive than seeing a film at a cinema in Leicester Square and billion times better! They need more of these cinemas over London!

Cheap - it ain't £12-14 (dependant on reclining or not) and let's be frank, a bowl of chilli stuffed olives and rosemary mixed nuts or one sweet craving of white chocolate covered bananas with cocktails can set you back enough to skip dinner entirely, but I have seen some thoroughly exhausting movies here ( Brad Bitt becomes infant - cough cough), and leather reclining seats with mojitos made that experience something almost enjoyable. If I had one critique, it would be fairly obvious one as a former resident - more selection/invention/events please. Any possibility of an 'event' generally requires Baker or Hampstead here - but for an experience beyond movie watching that feels akin to first class lounging try it.
