Food: 3/5 Service: 3/5 Overall experience: 3/5 (1- Terrible; 3- decent; 5- Fantastic) I've always wanted to try chicken and waffles, so I jumped at the opportunity when I saw Waffles & Chix at Calgary's Lilac Festival 2013. There was nothing memorable about the outside of the truck; white with red letters spelling out the name and concept of the truck, and a weird image of a chicken riding a 'waffle' skateboard. I managed to line up before a sudden rush; there was a bit of a wait (around 10 min to order and another 10 min for the food). The menu features: fried chicken and waffles ($9), a fried chicken poutine ($10), fried chicken & cheese waffle sandwich ($10), and sweet waffles for $5-$7. Note: Cash only. I ordered the southern fried chicken and waffle ($9), which for the price and portion is really decent compared to other Calgary food trucks. Definitely a carb overload and will put you in a food coma. Not the smartest idea on a hot day. Once I received my order, I was slightly disappointed to see that I did not get a fried chicken thigh or leg. Instead, I received two pieces of crispy chicken tenders. The chicken was a decent portion, but I almost ran out of it before I could finish the waffle. The dish could have had more gravy with a touch of hot sauce and I didn't like how the waffle became soggy from under the chicken and gravy. Overall, I wasn't blown away by the chicken and waffles. The truck stopped by my work place which was very exciting news. I've seen the truck around and have been anxious to try it! Very disappointing though, as the waffle was pretty soggy and the chicken was dry. The sauce was alright but there wasn't enough for both waffle and the dry chicken. The meal itself was difficult to finish. $9 could have been a way better meal. Really nothing to write home about. Oh - and cash only. read more

I came here with the boys to Mount St. Francis for the One Rock event. I waited until 2pm when there wasn't an insanely long lineup, and ordered the fried chicken with the waffle and white gravy for $10.00. Though the chicken was flavorful, I found it a bit dry and thought the oil it was fried in tasted a bit old (serves me right for waiting after the lunch rush). Like Queenie M., I would have preferred a chicken thigh or leg (rather than 2 pieces of chicken nuggets...). In some parts, there was more batter than chicken! The white gravy had very little taste to it, so I found it was quite an odd combination with the chicken and the waffle. However, the waffle was light, fluffy, and downright lip-smackingly delicious! I wish I had some maple syrup to go with it! The service was very pleasant and efficient, though(so I gave them an extra star). I've got some news for you waffle lovers out there : I don't like waffles. However, I like fried chicken and gravy. I arrived to no line, which is a nice change. Decided on the classic buttermilk waffle with fried chicken and white gravy. My oh my. This was a far cry from some of the oversized, flavourless waffles I've had in the past that were the original reason I was so turned off of this food. This was much different. It was light, had a great buttermilk flavour, and was cooked just right so it wasn't a large hockey puck. The chicken was nicely breaded, and the white gravy was great. Two stars partly due to my frustration at having inadvertently ordered the only item that does not include a waffle. While listed under Savoury Waffles, the poutine is, in fact, _sans waffle_. The other reason for two stars is the chicken, which was a breast piece battered and cut into strips. Quite dry and a bit reticent, it had nothing much going for it: no apparent buttermilk marinade, punchy seasoning, or crispy texture. I f you have a truck with a small menu, I expect all the items to have been carefully honed and perfected...which was far from true here. I won't doc them on the shredded cheese rather than squeaky curds, as they just say "Alberta cheese" on the menu. The white gravy was decent, but the drizzle of maple syrup most more of a distraction than an enhancer. The best part were the fries themselves, which has a nice texture, almost like they were yukon golds but that can't be right, can it? Maybe some of the other dishes are better, but the $10 price tag, the subpar quality of the chicken, the flavour mismatching of the maple syrup (which is on several dishes), and the lukewarm waffle reviews of others don't make me want to give it another go. read more

One of my better food truck experiences. Nice big pieces of white chicken with light coating on a rather wilted-looking waffle. I was impressed by the quality of the meat and how nicely it was complimented by the sweetness of the icing-syrup and powdered sugar. A decadent and messy affair. Not exactly soul food, but still worth throwing your lactose intolerance to "the wind" for. And, yes, all food trucks are overpriced. read more

This food truck is great! As they were parked outside my office, it was either this place or some other +15 guy that I've had 900 times before. So a colleague and I gave Waffles n Chix a try! We both ordered the traditional Waffles n Chix which came with half a waffle on top, pieces of chicken inside with gravy and then another half of a waffle on the bottom. What a delicious unexpected treat. I like the savoury and sweet combo of the syrup and chicken. The gravy could've used.. a little extra something, but otherwise I was pleased with how much syrup, gravy and chicken was provided. The chicken pieces were moist and delish. My only recommendation would be to provide perhaps a cover for the food - it was chilly today and windy and some folks usually have to wait for others, so maybe something in more of a sealed container to keep the food nice n toasty. Keep up the good work, Waffles n Chix! I realize you're actually called "Waffles & Chix" but it's too late now. I almost didn't eat here after reading the other reviews, but I'm glad I did. We had the cheesy waffle sandwich and the poutine. The chicken was chicken tenders (white meat), but it was perfectly moist and had a nicely flavored breading. It tasted like it was battered in-house, not like a chicken strip or nugget. The white gravy was great, as were the waffles. The fries could have been a little better, but overall I liked our meal. Good portion size for the price, and minimal waiting time. read more

DO NOT EAT HERE!!! The food is absolutely awful! The powdered gravy tastes like dirty mop water. Dry, tasteless, cold, gristly chicken and soggy bland poor excuses for waffles. Not to mention the poor customer service and the staff being berated in front of customers. Save your hard earned money and go anywhere else. read more
