Cool setting! Underground and nice ambiance. Food was great for adults and kids. Service was very good.

Tightly packed tables greet you to a loud, festive basement. It's overheated and uncomfortable. The drinks are average for London and the service is satisfactory. The food is a hot mess. We had some small plates as well as larger dishes. The chicken empanadas were good. The wings had good flavor. The chicken burrito was gloppy and overloaded with off-tasting spices. The guacamole was made from old avocados. You know the taste - musty and gross. Chicken taquitos were greasy but okay. The queso fundido was disgusting. It was a dish full of grilled peppers, tomatoes, and onions with a bit of cheese melted on top, plus some outrageously spicy sausage bits on top, piled high with chopped red onions and cilantro. I adore queso fundido, and this was an abomination. I suppose if one deliberately misspells Oaxaca to be cute, one who patronizes such an establishment should expect to be deliberately cheated out of authentic Mexican cuisine. My love of wahaca has gone! The first time I went to wahacs I was genuinely wowed- fresh, spicy and different food and over the years I have been probably 20 times with friends, family and colleagues. This visit will be my last as wahaca has lost its soul. Smaller portions of guacamole (£4.50), dry pork pibil, slow waitresses, more ice in my drink than the drink itself. Clearly this is all in pursuit of increased profit but this has vastly diminished the experience. What a shame.... read more

Let me be clear from the start - this is a review based on an attempt to eat at Wahaca in Waterloo. We did not end up having a meal there because of the outrageously rude host and hostess. In short, we put our names down for a table and went outside, armed with a pager to alert us when our table was ready. After about 20 minutes, the pager starts to buzz. Five minutes later, we approach the host, who informs us that he has given our table away due to our FIVE MINUTE lag. When we protested, suggesting that five minutes was not nearly a sufficient amount of time to justify giving our table away, his response was: "You admitted it took you five minutes." Yes, we did admit it took us five minutes, which seems like a more than reasonable amount of time to hold a table (especially for a group that is in possession of a pager...it's not like we put our names down just to score a useless pager and then walked away). Moreover, we were never alerted that we had a three minute window between being paged and approaching the host. Having eaten at other Wahacas, I can attest to the fact that the food is mediocre. But with service like this, I can see no justification for giving this restaurant (certainly the Waterloo branch) any future business. You're better off heading to one of the new burrito chains that are popping up all over London. read more

Nice lunch spot in the area! There are few good venues around there, i.e. places where you can sit down to enjoy a proper lunch, but this is one of them. I had the tortilla chips with guacamole, both delicious, as well as the quesadillas with chicken, also very good. I would rcommend this place. read more

Popped in on a rainy Sunday for lunch. The staff were very friendly and helpful (especially the manager 'Long'). Food and drinks arrived very quickly (some of the drinks came before the waitress had even left our table when she was taking our order). All the drinks and food were up to the usual Wahaca deciousness. A very convienent location right next to Waterloo and stunning decor throughout. This is the worst Wahaca we have been to, and it's the fifth one we visited! We are regulars at the soho branch and it's by far the best. Firstly, there was a sick waiter coughing and sneezing all over the place! We actually had to point it out for him to stop. Secondly, the horchata drinks were too watery. Thirdly, all the food was bland. In fact, our favourite dish, the Sonora salad, we had to actually refuse to pay for it. That was a first for us. It would be a real shame for someone to come to this particular branch for their first Wahaca experience. It is simply not good enough. In fact it is awful. Go to Wahaca in Soho or in Covent Garden instead. We can't help but think that Wahaca is spreading itself too thinly, expanding way too fast and at the cost of high standards. A shame. read more

I love Wahaca, but, this particular branch is possibly the loudest restaurant I've ever been in. Reassuringly, the punters are the usual young 'suits' that have always populated the food and drink establishments of waterloo (unlike say, The Young Vic, now saturated with young Tories), but due to the fact it's a concrete basement, the noise is INSANE. I'd hazard to say it defies one or two EU noise regulations. Avoid this branch. Go to the south bank instead where the tourists are politely quieter. Alternatively the Cheapside branch is only a pleasing 20 minute walk away. Your ear holes will appreciate it. Sorry for sounding old. read more

Reasonably priced and serving time is quick. The food is not totally authentic, although it's a chain restaurant, so that's kind of expected. I liked that you could choose a couple of small sized dishes, so that you can have variety. I got two dishes and was pretty full. The service was awful, the staff stood and chatted near the bar and didn't acknowledge their customers. Really disappointed because I've been meaning to try the place for a long time. Went to the Cardiff wahaca, was served by a lovely lady Blaise. She couldn't have been anymore helpful in explaining the menu, didn't oversell products told us that we only needed to order certain amount as we had over ordered. Food was great and would highly recommend. The only down side to the whole place was the proximity of the tables next to us. Would have rather been a bit further away from the next table. I have never come away disappointed with eating at Wahaca. The service is great, the atmosphere is fun and the food is exceptional. I love the interior of this branch also. There are many options for vegetarians, I'm often spoilt for choice, which can be rare. Thier drinks and cocktails are also brilliant. read more

So happy that London finally has AUTHENTIC Mexican food. I went to Cancun last year and going to Wahaca always reminds me of that visit. Their waitresses are very attentive and provide swift service. I really enjoy that you can order a bunch of smaller things to share, makes it more social for a group and can get a good night out started. I've tried most everything on the menu. Been meaning to come here for a long time but the opportunity never presented itself. Went tonight while in town for an exam and glad I popped in. Good atmosphere and all the staff were friendly and engaging. I was served by Mel who was an absolute charm. An asset to the restaurant she made the visit a very welcoming experience. The food came out quickly and was clearly made with passion by a very efficient kitchen team. Had the chicken enchiladas and churros for dessert. Quite spicy enchilada but very nice. Wouldn't hesitate to come back again. Very reasonable prices for London as well. read more

Good food, great service by Ruby very polite but lacked attention to her section . Missed the fact we had a long wait for our desserts. When asked when they were coming after a delay we were informed she had asked management . More time past I had enough got up and found assistance myself , young man who was also on the door hosting could have been the manager of the lady in all black . I mention to him there was an in acceptable delay for two Churros and requested the bill. Ruby returned with the desserts and informed us they were on the house which was a fair gesture. Who ever the manager was on duty could not clearly have the time to attend to a complaint. What a shame this was not handled to a good standard . read more

First thing's first, I love Wahaca. I rave about it and always tell people to eat there. I've eaten at the ones in Stratford and Canary Wharf, but tonight was my first time eating at Wahaca in Waterloo. I brought my entire family to try it for the first time but the hostess was not friendly at all. She told us we would have to wait 1 hour and 20 minutes for our table and so I gave her my name and we went to walk around Southwark. About 20 minutes passed and my little sister said she needed food and couldn't wait any longer. I told her we could eat at the Wahaca food cart outside and then go back to the restaurant in time for dessert since I had been talking about the chocolate and the churros for a long time. We ate our burritos (which were tasty) and killed some time so we could have our dessert. We went into the restaurant when the time was right and they seated us right away. We told them we wanted to see the dessert menu and our waiter brought the menus out to us and then told a co-worker, maybe a manager, that we just wanted to order dessert and not food. Next thing I know, he came over and told us that the tables we were sitting at were only for people who wanted to have a meal. He told us that we should not just go into the restaurant to have dessert, even if we were waiting for an hour and 20 minutes! He said that this was the only time they were going to let us have dessert and to "not do it next time". It was absolutely ridiculous and I was so angry it ruined my dessert! He had no right to tell us what we could order and couldn't order. I couldn't believe how horrible the staff were after I had had such impeccable service from the ones in East London. read more

Great decor and friendly service, if a little slow. Lunched here today with a colleague. Agua fresca was lovely and we both ordered burritos (mine - steak and cheese, hers - courgette and cactus) and guacamole. My colleague said hers was great but mine was dry, dry, dry. I asked for cheese and had to open up the burrito to see if there was any in it because I couldn't taste it. There was, but just a sprinkling. The rice was very dry as was the burrito itself - not saucy enough. Guacamole was more of an avocado smash-it didn't even have a little kick to it. Hope this will all improve! Wahaca Waterloo has become one of our firm favourites in the area. Most of the food is pretty authentic and you can get a proper Mexican feast for not a lot of money. All staff that have served us on all occasions have been super friendly, helpful and the service is really quick, efficient and attentive . The real heart of the place though is the manager Long who's always super welcoming and obviously really cares about every guest and making sure everyone is looked after and having the best Wahacavexperince possible !! Dont miss the epic pork pibil tacos, the chicken quessadilla or a pot of comforting frijoles (refried beans) to dip your tortills chips in. Will be back for more !!! read more

The food was good, but unfortunately it did not come out all at once. In fact, there was a 30 minute gap between the meals arriving at the table. To make the situation even worse, the manager tried to explain to me that this was normal and the way restaurants work. She was extremely rude and unapologetic. Last night (sat 23rd Jan) I ate at the Waterloo branch. I love wahaca and when in town look forward to a visit. We ordered a couple of beers, a salsa and chips, 1 pork burrito and one steak burrito. I ordered the steak without cheese. When the food arrived the steak came with cheese! The waiter took it and it was replaced. This was fine the food was lovely and I can't complain however when we asked for the bill it had two steak burritos included followed by a deduction for 1 saying its on us. How odd because I certainly wasn't paying for the one I sent back. The waiter apologised and explained it was his error. He wanted to offer me the burrito on the house to apologise for the error for including cheese. He went away to update the bill and we were kind of taken aback by the generosity. The waiter then returned. He looked very humiliated and apologised. He explained that the manager wasnt prepared to offer us the burrito for free. I felt a little bit frustrated by this. If you are going to offer something then please don't give it to the customer then take it away from them. It felt like a slap in the face!! read more
