The first thing I wanted to do after arriving at Heathrow - grabbing a hot coffee from Waitrose (free for MyWaitrose card holders) and a pack dark chocolate digestives and enjoy a stroll through a lovely green park (England is full of open green spaces). So when I say I was thinking about going to Waitrose during my flight across the pond, I'm actually not exaggerating. Okay, so here is the low down. Waitrose is not cheap but it is quality. If you follow the deals though, you can buy wisely and buy value. For about £2 or £3 you can get a whole raw chicken and a £1 avocado during their half-price sale (on now) which actually seem on par or even cheaper than home. I recently grabbed an uber delicious crispy salad, mince for a delicious braised mince and nice crusty bread for under £5. I am from Los Angeles, where I am spoiled with abundant fresh veg and really great value food prices. When it comes to groceries, if quality matters you shop here. And if you are on a student budget with champagne tastes (like me) go for the deals and always keep an eye out for the exceptional deals running close to closing hours. My favourite items at Waitrose are most often the veg, always crisp and very tasty. I have to admit, I don't always get a tomato that taste like a tomato at the other grocery chains like I do at Waitrose. Here at Henleaze, you can enjoy a free car park, self-serve coffee, wide and well-stocked selections, and friendly staff. The essential line is Waitrose's own label and you will find prices comparative to other big shops.

On my way out of the cinema, I have on occasion done a moderate sized shop here in the past, which I think a lot of people do. For to be able to shop here for your weekly groceries, you would need to be on a slightly higher pay scale than myself. The only people who can afford this place are the same people who buy all of their furniture from John Lewis. And the fact that the two chains are connected is no coincidence. This is high end, quality food for the filthy rich. Everything about this place screams upper middle class, but not in a bad way. The fish is fresher than other supermarkets, the yokes of the eggs are more yellow, the breads are softer. It is quality food and in this life you get what you pay for I guess.

Tescos try very hard to make themselves out to be the cheapest retailer so they have loads of special offers and incentives as well as their clubcard scheme and customer services.

I often come here from work to get some lunch and the sandwich selection is a little disappointing, if you get there too late there is very little left. The veggie food on offer in this supermarket is the best for miles around, they do lots of chilled and frozen veggie stuff, it also stocks a good range of baby foods which you wont find in any other Bridgwater supermarket.

The butcher is a real butcher and knows the different cuts of meat. The shop is well laid out and is easy to navigate. They always have special offers on that change on a weekly basis. Be aware though that you need a £1 coin for the trolley. If you do forget then customer service will loan you a £1. You can always get a car park place and easily get around the whole car park. The resturant serves good value lunches as well.

I'm usually disappointed by the cards in supermarkets, although it's usually the place I am when I remember that I need to get one and it's too late to go anywhere else. This is the situation I found myself in today, and readied myself to buy a boring card that's the same as you see everywhere else and will probably be the same as another card on the mantelpiece of my friend whose birthday it was. In my previous visits to Sainsbury's (and I do go there a few times a week) I had noticed the card section at the front of the store and assumed that it was pretty small, but I was surprised to find that there was rather a large selection to choose from. And they weren't all just your standard Hallmark cards either; they had lines that I'd never seen anywhere else and were really lovely. As well as the birthday card I needed, I found loads of blank cards with gorgeous pictures that I bought just because I liked them, and I ended up spending around £8 in total, which I think is rather a lot to spend on cards. This was not because they were expensive either, with most standard size cards costing around £1.50. So next time you need to buy someone a card, do not underestimate Sainsbury's! (Oh, and on a slightly different subject, this Sainsbury's petrol station is also the only place I know of where you can pump your tyres up for free. Thank-you, Sainsbury's)

This Sainsburys supermarket is big, but is by no means as intimidating as Tesco Extra can be (if you go with friends you can very easily loose them in Tesco's). They have a great selection of food at all prices available, and I particularly like Indian and Chinese ready meal selection. They also have a fresh fish and meat, delicatessen, and bakery counters, all manned by really lovely staff. Finally I'd also recommend checking out their DVD selection as prices are rather cheap, I managed to buy New Moon the week it came for only £7.99 (so I can now swoon at Robert Pattison to my hearts content).

This tesco has so much in to there is groceries of course but upstairs there is clothes, electrical, toys, stationary, school stuff, a cafe, stuff for home, you name it they have it! I like the way it is all upstairs so if you just want to go food shopping you don't need to go up there and that saves so much time! It is always easy to shop in this store it has a good layout and i always find some different items to try there is so much range. There is a fish deli, cheese counter, bakery etc all instore. There is a petrol garage as you leave which is always a quick and easy place to fill the car. A while back they added the second floor which was great since it split out the food from the other stuff. I normally just enjoy looking at the upstairs part. They hav a good range of goods at very good prices. Was recently looking for a cd which was over £12 in every place i looked but found it there for an incredible, weirdly priced £5. Food areas are well laid out and so its easy to find what you need. Great to go in the evening when they reduce the bread and other items. Cafe serves good food although since my parents only live a few minutes from it I dont go there very often. Petrol station is good and because its quite separate from the main store means you dont get caught up in the store traffic.

Shuffling around the aisles, it's not hard to see why. The place is very well-stocked with more than you'd expect to find here. Clothes? Sure - why not. An electronics section? Totes. DVDs and game? You bet your bottom dollar. DIY? Surely not - but yes. Camping equipment? It cannot be, but it is. Household utensils? What kind of place am I even in any more? ASDA Frome has a bit of everything and lots of what you'd expect. A fresh fish counter, a delicatessen, even a pizza-making section where you can custom-pick your design (and they're good pizzas, too!). Backing all this up are friendly, helpful staff and great prices. Loads of free on-site parking and open until 11pm every weekday. What a winner.

Asda in Frome has been open for a few years now, and it's been a massive success. This inexpensive…read moresuperstore is large and packed with everything you'd expect and need from a major retailer. Large car-park so seldom any queuing even on the busiest of days, and cashpoints for the terminally broke! The store iteslef covers clothes for women, men, and younger kids (not for teenage boys though, please note). The bakery turns out wonderful loaves, the wine section is extensive, and the rest is perfect for an all-in weekly shop. The aisles are wide and so you don't get trolley snarl-ups (often!). The staff are unfailingly helpful, although it's sometimes hard to catch one standing still long enough to ask a question of! But they will always go the extra mile to check if there is extra stock out back, so you feel valued. Prices are good all across the board, and their Own Brand and Value items make for good savings. The only (small) criticism is the location, or rather to lack of public transport to get to it. Right out on the edge of town is fine for driving but if you don't have your own transport then it can be expensive to get a cab there and back (which you will certainly need for a weekly shop). Although there is a bus service that runs to and from the store from the market place it's not regular enough to be really convenient (or memorable - and nobody wants to sit around the town centre for up to an hour waiting for a bus). But all that aside, it's a great store for getting everything under one roof if you need items of kids clothing and shoes as well as gifts and/or electrical and household goods when you do a big weekly foodshop. Note that there is a self-service petrol station next to the supermarket so you can even fill up your tank for a competitive amount as well.
