This team has had…read moremany a barnstorming performances, and they've managed to barn all of the hooligans from attending so that's good. First-Hand Experience: I've been to see them at home a few times and my old friend played for them which I'll tell you about in a minute. I have masses of respect for Barnsley and they have a fantastic support base and a great stadium, but the team itself has always been a little uninspiring to me, and so I'll give them a 3 rather than a 4. I did enjoy seeing them live though, every single time. Formed in 1887, I have a personal connection to this team because my Dad's team (Milan FC based in Oxford) once had a player named Taggart, who smashed the ball so hard off the field one time, that it knocked me off a wall and winded me. That same guy had a brother, who was the captain of Barnsley, and the captain of Northern Ireland. He has gone down in history as one of the greatest Barnsley players ever. He even led them to the promised land of the Premier League, where they performed badly. Now they are down in the third tier of English football, but they have an impressive 23k stadium and hope that they will get back up there at some point. They are known as the Tykes because they go around spreading their seed and having children with as many women as possible. And they play in red and white. They once recently knocked Rafa's Liverpool (my Liverpool) out of the FA Cup. I respect the club a lot and they have a great stadium but as they've never really made their mark on the game, I'm keeping them as a 3.

The majority of the stadium was redeveloped in the 1990's, so has a fresh, but traditional feel to it. This of course is barring the West Stand, which by the looks of it has only recieved new seats in a large number of years! Oakwell also encompasses several smaller venues on the site which form the facilities of the Barnsley FC Academy. These include an indoor training pitch, smaller stadium and several training pitches. As an away fan, you'll be seated in the North Stand, which is the most recent development of the stadium. I believe it houses approximately 6000 fans, but rarely is the full allocation given to most teams. The facilities are good, but nothing out of the ordinary. The usual food and drink options for a football ground are available. Alcohol is served on matchdays, although if you are a local rival or a team known to cause trouble, expect it to not be served on yours! For drinking before the match, the safest place is probably at the Barnsley Metrodome, a few mins walk (up the hill) from the away end. Nice ground compared to many, worth a visit.

My first visit to the stadium was in April 2022, as I watched Manchester City defeat Leeds 4-0. There are a good number of buses that serve the stadium, which run close to Leeds Railway Station, although the wait before and after the game can be quite a long time. The ground staff and stewards seemed friendly enough and welcoming towards away supporters. I did find it a little difficult to find the away end, which did involve walking the terraces and streets around the ground, signage to find entrances could certainly be an improvement, but this may be down to the local council. The atmosphere in the ground was very good, the ground regularly seemed full and hopefully, an expansion is on the card soon, as it seems Leeds could certainly fill more than the 37,792 capacity they have now. For an older stadium, the facilities were rather good including a Club Store, and a large screen showing the scoreboard and replays. Certainly a stadium worthy of Premier League status. 4*

As such, it feels wrong to say anything bad about Adel club, however, the clientèle must be mentioned - there are a few grumpy old fellas who won't look favourably upon you unless you're on their side of fifty. If you venture into the snooker hall (which is actually very reasonably priced and well maintained), you are likely to get a few comments from the elders if you do anything remotely out of line. It's a good place to hang out on a lazy Sunday afternoon, with plenty of sports teams to watch (cricket, football, hockey) on the pitches by the social club, yet the appearance of the club, both in and out, is unappetising. Luckily, the fact that you can get a pint of bitter for a scandalously cheap price means that you soon forget about this.

Sunday is the best day to go as there is cheese source which is to lovely. It is the best carvery for miles, we travel for an hour and a half to get there. IT IS A MUST if you like good old roast dinners. Not to forget their amazing puddings, if you have room.
