Struggling up Whitchurch High Street on a hot day, Walker's came as a godsend. From the street you enter a shop, best described as bakery and delicatessen, through hanging chains in the doorway. The tea room is upstairs, via the staircase in the back, right corner as you enter, and make your way past racks of crisps.
The house is old and crocked, and the beams hang low ... are you shorter than 5 foot? Good, in that case no crash helmet is needed!
Up the stairs is the tea room, with friendly staff, tables and a good lunch-time menu. You can get sandwiches, quiche, or lasagna, or fried eggs on toast, and tea, and water and milk.
I had the quiche with salad, and both were good. Others had fried eggs on toast and ate the middle part, but as grannie is just a little one we did not make her eat up. The milk was cool, the bottled water was cold, and the silver tea that grannie had was to her liking.
Facilities: yes, the Men's room is there, down the corridor by the counter, turn right at the kitchen and left again, and mind you do not enter the storeroom in the attic, but instead the toilet. Sit on the throne if you like, or stand, upper body bent well backwards as the ceiling slants and you are a step up. Nice view of the slate, or is it medieval tile roof through the (grimy) Velux window. read more
