We were driving along I-90 East between Custer, South Dakota and Badlands National Park (09.27.2024). We started to notice, and to anticipate, advertising signs for Wall Drug Store in Wall SD every few miles. The first one advertised that they have ice cream. The next, 5-cent coffee. Then, western wear. Free ice water. Etc. So, I pulled up their website on my phone, and found that they're a 76,000 square foot Western-themed attraction with shopping, restaurants, an art gallery, and kids-oriented activities (TrainStation water show, photo with T-Rex, ride on a jackalope). During peak season, they can get up 20 thousand visitors per day. We decided to check it out, and to grab some dinner while there. To our surprise, the 530-seat restaurant (and most everything else) closes at 6 pm (or earlier), so we went to the restaurant first. Another family joined us in line to order their dinners but, at that hour, most of the other customers were only ordering doughnuts. My husband ordered a Buffalo Burger with fries ($16.68), which featured a 1/3 lb. burger on a toasted bun, with lettuce, tomatoes, onion, and pickle. There was a table with ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc. (Burger by itself was $11.99). Rating: 3/5. The burger was quite dry and under-seasoned. I ordered an all-beef hot dog, which was served on a bun with three pickle slices. ($6.69). (Rating: 4/5). We both agreed that I made the better choice as the hot dog was nicely grilled on the outside but still juicy on the inside. It would've been nice to have some onions to go with it. We also felt that our dinner was over-priced, especially as it was essentially fast food -- ordered/picked up at the counter without table service. We paid about $30, even before tip, for just a burger, hot dog, and one French fries. Ambiance. There are multiple rooms with a lot of tables in each, remembering that they can seat 530. As we were approaching the closing time of 6 pm, there were only about six of us left in our section. Soon after, staff started to close up for the day, sweeping the floor, wiping down tables, while also carrying on a conversation with each other across tables. This was disruptive for enjoying our dinner. On the positive side, the restaurant also serves as a gallery, with more than 300 original oil paintings and illustrations with Western themes, which is reportedly the largest such private collection in the US. This is one of those iconic SD landmarks so I guess you need to go, but it is really nothing more than a tourist trap. It is a very large property with meandering mazes of cobbled together rooms full of junk. There isn't likely anything you need in there, but there is a ton to see. The place is absolutely packed with people and if you aren't watching, they will run you over. We ate there and got two bison burgers and two drinks, and it was nearly $60, so you know you are being taken advantage of, in the middle of nowhere. I will not go back when I'm in Wall or driving through Wall, and I recommend you just skip this, despite the hundreds of interstate signs encouraging you to stop. Don't. read more

This is one of those 'must stop' places if you're close to Wall, SD We actually spent the night in our RV in one of their parking lots, which was a great free night for us. The store itself is a bit like a prototype Buccees. Honestly not as big as I expected, but still fun to walk through and explore. We walked over in the morning for our FIVE CENT coffee and a 'famous' donut, which at almost $3ea was just ok, before hitting the road to explore the Badlands. Fun little place! read more

We're glad we stopped here to check it out, but the many road signs overhyped it a little bit. The food was just okay and pretty expensive. It might be better to eat elsewhere in Wall, before checking this out. There are a ton of stores and some cool tourist trap type stuff. If you're nearby, definitely stop in for a Western experience and some funny pictures, but don't expect too much. Wall Drug in Wall, South Dakota, turned out to be more frustrating than fun. The endless billboards along the highway build it up like Buc-ee's in Texas--a sign practically every mile until you finally reach the store. Once inside, the place is split into what feels like 15 different sections, and each one seems to require you to pay before moving on to the next. The staff came across as unfriendly, which made the experience even less enjoyable. Trying to find a men's restroom that was actually open felt like navigating a corn maze in Nebraska--confusing and time-consuming. On top of that, the aisles are incredibly narrow, making it difficult to move around when it's busy. While it's a famous roadside stop, I found it more of a headache than a highlight. read more

Wow. I think Wall Drug has the most iconic marketing strategy: billboards and small roadside signs all along the interstate and state roads from one border to the next. Five cent coffee? well, yes! world famous? maybe not. Touristy? Hell yes. I make infrequent stops to Wall Drug, and when I do stop, it's not because I want to, but after miles of interstate driving, you have that not-subliminal Wall Drug marketing seep into your brain and your car just starts detouring you to it. I stop for the donuts. Yes. Donuts. Plain or frosted. It's not really a drug store, but a block long set of shops connected inside and selling all types of kitschy and touristy gadgets and dust collectors and even some useful, fun things. Wall Drug also has a restaurant of sorts where you go through a line, order, and then they call your number and you pick it up at the counter. It isn't cheap and it is always busy. The kitchen does a good job of keeping the food coming out and the cashiers have that blasé "yes, honey. you aren't going to phase me, so just order and move along" attitude. On this visit, I tried the buffalo burger and while I waited, snacked on a donut. Honestly, I could have dumped the burger. There might have been a micro-spec of buffalo meat held in with lots of filler. It wasn't that good. The onion rings, however, were beyond tasty. Note to self: next time order donuts and onion rings. Healthy eating be damned. The layout of Wall Drug is one that keeps you captive. The shops have openings into the next section but try to find an exit to get out of this place and you'll understand the phrase rat-in-a-cage. Despite all of that, it's a fun place to spend time. One of my favorite places to stop on the way out to the Black hills and on the way back. Always fun to go with your kids to the big backyard and see the T-Rex. You try one of their specialty donuts and enjoy the five cent coffee along with it in the dining room. Check out all of the art around food areas as well as the ceilings which have all of the local cattle brandings on wood boards all around the top. They have an amazing camping store with all kinds of inexpensive knives that will drive kids crazy. Good deals around on Black hills Gold rings and jewelry. After passing and reading the numerous road signs we had to make a stop at Wall Drug. We were really intrigued by the free ice water and assumed there was a history behind it. And there is! It took us a while to locate the freebie which was enjoyed after checking out the stores. We had a chocolate milk shake from the parlour. It was ok. Tasted similar to a frosty from Wendy's Burger Joint. We had dinner at Red Rock last night that we did a separate review. On our way back on the road we had to try the famous doughnuts. We picked up chocolate and vanilla ones. They were a solid four but would be a five if they were warm. Is have everything you could want within its walls from 5 cent cup of coffee, a pretty decent restaurant, homemade admits, plenty of trinket shops and some great art stores and legit western apparel stores, and even a chapel for the weary traveler and low down sinners seeking redemption. Around it is a town filled with things to do, sites to see, and stuff to accumulate. Several really great shops with fairly reasonable prices. Check out the restaurants and cafes. It really is more than a tourist trap kind of town. Wall gives you some really good history and value for its offerings. You can really spend a few days here. A great stop for kids and adults alike. Vibe: Proof Advertising Works Parking: Free on Main Street and multiple other lots for campers, semi or trucks I started seeing signs for this place in WYOMING. It was lunch time so decided to drop in. The place is huge and you could easily spend several hours wondering from place to place within the green doors. I found the dinner and ordered: Buffalo Burger, onion rings and coke. Price was $23.87. Definitely not worth the price! Pretty sure it wasn't buffalo, but was Ok. I have dug Wall Drug. Yes, this place is a tourist trap but, it's a tourist trap in the best way possible! Take some time, slow down and enjoy a piece of Americana. This place has it all! Even a little Chappel. My son and I spent well over an hour here, playing video games in the arcade, perusing the souvenirs (and there's a lot of them) watching the animatronics and snacking on the donuts and five cent coffee. They have everything from fudge, to boardgames, to magnets and t-shirts to toys and more. I even found a DaiRugger XV (Vehicle Voltron) toy rerelease from when I was I kid for $15!! He's on my bookshelf now. We came back the next day for dinner after visiting Badlands National Park. It was surprisingly good; the roast beef sandwich is a winner. Warning!! They post the WRONG hours on purpose to screw people out of their precious time and money! We were on vacation at Badlands and left the park early to try and make it to Wall Drug by 8 PM, when they supposedly closed. We drove all the way there to try the world-famous donuts and coffee, and of course the "free iced water". We arrived at like 7:15 and thought we had plenty of time, but the damn restaurant CLOSES AT 7 PM!!! So the ONLY thing open was the gift stores, of course because they want your $$$$. The restaurant and ALL the small cafe's were closed already!! We were pissed that we left the park early and didn't have time to drive back. So we figured we'd go check out the T-rex and all those interesting things to see in the back area. Guess what, IT WAS CLOSED TOO!! They close up EVERYTHING except for the gift shops at 7 PM. WTF?? If you're in the area you pretty much have to stop here. They have everything. Whatever kind of souvenirs you can dream of, they have them. The place is huge. I can't believe that this place has been going strong since the 1930s! Pretty amazing. I was really drawn in by the 1,000 billboards that I saw from Rapid City to Mitchell and back again. But, I stayed for the free ice water. I grabbed lunch after a long day of driving and got inside just shortly after it had started raining, so it was nice to be cozy inside. Okay so I can see why some folks might not be super impressed with Wall Drug, afterall it is a roadside attraction at its core. That to me though, is where the magic lies because Wall Drug is the end all be all roadside attraction. The people that created Wall Drug clearly understood the assignment. First of all, there isn't a lot on the stretch of highway between Omaha, NE and Wall, SD. So, once you enter that stretch of highway you'll begin to see signs for Wall, and I have to lend it to their marketing team as the billboards are nothing short of delightful. In case you are wondering, we counted 100 (we kept a tally) this time as we approached. Which, honestly, is worth the four stars in and of itself. What dedication. Wall Drug opened its doors about two generations ago offering free water and 5c coffee to folks stopping to gaze at the Badlands, and it just sort of grew from there. What was once a small town drugstore became the sprawling attraction it is today. When you pull into the town of Wall you'll quickly discover that Wall Drug what not only keeps this place afloat (along with the proximity to the Badlands), but it's also probably about 1/4 the square footage of the town. It's massive, sprawling, and includes a restaurant, ice cream parlor, souvenir shop, Zoltar machine, animatronic entertainment (think Goofy movie), and all kinds of surprises and photo ops. Is this a place you travel to just to see it? Probably not, but if you are driving by it's unique enough that I think it's well worth the stop. If you have kids they will be entranced by the animatronic dinosaur, if you're solo, you'll marvel at how unique and spectacularly kitsch the place is. This was my second visit, and my first time really walking through it as the first visit was a quick pit stop on much longer road trip. All in all I think if you come here with an open mind, and know it's a road side stop you'll be impressed, enjoy some laughs, and probably bring home some funny souvenirs. Only downside is that the food (IMO) is a bit expensive for what it is, but there are limited options in Wall so I get it to a certain degree. On a side note, with it being an election year I was pleasantly surprised at how the owners of this place kept politics out of their store. As I've traveled around America in recent years I've found that tons of souvenir shops carry tons of items pertaining to politics and I was honestly surprised and refreshed to find that I didn't see any of that here. It really made for a more welcoming and inclusive space. At any rate, if the 100 billboards leading up to Wall Drug, along with the free ice water, and zoltar machine don't entice you let this be your official recommendation to give it a go, it's free to walk around so why not enjoy it! read more

I loved my visit to Wall Drug! The 5 cent coffee tasted pretty good ( I added creamer and had several cups). It was totally fine to take the coffee around while browsing in the various shops and viewing the attractions. I had so much fun exploring and looking for souvenirs to purchase. This review is specifically about the donuts at Wall Drug. I originally visited this tourist trap a couple of years ago and after biting into my first Wall Drug donut I knew I had to revisit. Plain Donut ($2.29), Frosted Donuts ($2.59 each) - On this last visit, we ended up getting four total donuts, one of each type: Plain, Maple Frosted, Chocolate Frosted, and Vanilla Frosted. I found the vanilla to be the sweetest which kind of overpowered the vanilla flavor. The maple doesn't keep well at all. After only being in the bag for 30 minutes, the frosting completely stuck onto the wax paper and basically made this into a plain donut. The frosting essentially melded into the paper and it was impossible to remove. The chocolate was the best of the bunch - chocolatey, not too sweet, and the entire donut managed to stay intact in the package. To be honest, though, the frosting is kind of secondary to the donut itself, which is superb. This is the only donut shop I've been to where the donuts actually have a thin fried external layer that exhibits a very nice light crisp, adding a good textural contrast to the fluffy interior. The cake donut interior is moist, fluffy, and just fantastic. Honestly, it's one of the best cake donuts you can find. Wall stuff is definitely a tourist trap but the donuts here are legit. They also sell day old donuts in half dozen or dozens for half off. We actually left the maple donut for the next day and the exterior crust was still there. The only downside was the donut was a smudge drier. It was still pretty good, so I guess the day olds might be worth it? read more
