It is utterly forgettable and in fact, I have forgotten everything about it, except when I visit my neighborhood's biggest tourist draw, the Wedgwood Rock. "That's not a rock, THAT'S a rock!" Standing 19 feet tall and deposited by glacial ice sheets tens of thousands of years ago, the Wedgwood Rock is a humbling reminder of just how little control we humans have over our grand Mother Earth. According to Dr. Terry W. Swanson, of the UW Department of Geological Sciences, the Wedgwood Rock has its origins on Fidalgo Island, near Anacortes, about 75 miles north of Seattle. It was carried 75 miles and by ice sheets and then deposited in little old Wedgwood as the most recent ice age ended (source: http://bit.ly/WcjCNQ). Admittedly, the Wedgwood Rock doesn't quite rank up there with Seattle's top tourist draws, but it's always a lot of fun to take visitors on a drive by and watch their eyes bulge as we round the corner to 28th Ave NE and the rock comes into view. Kudos to the neighbors of the Wedgwood Rock who have assumed the role of caretakers for the iconic boulder, from enforcing the climbing ban, to gardening around it, to making sure graffiti gets cleaned up promptly. It's a bit ironic, of course, that the Wedgwood Rock isn't actually in the Wedgwood neighborhood, which is widely considered to encompass the boundaries of NE 95th St to NE 75th St, between 45th Ave NE on the east to a combination of Lake City Way, Ravenna Ave NE, and 25th Ave NE on the west (Source: http://bit.ly/Wcm6vI). Technically I suppose it would be the Ravenna neighborhood that the rock actually resides in. Still, that bit of trivia doesn't detract from the neighborhood's love for its most famous attraction, nor its appeal to young and old alike. Tip: While the Wedgwood Rock may be the neighborhood's largest and most famous glacial erratic, it is hardly the only one. Check out the Wedgwood Rock's modest sibling located in a tiny park known as Wedgwood Square at the corner of 31st Ave NE and NE 82nd Street.

I've read that this rock has a pretty rich history as a landmark for native americans, a picnic spot for families, a place for hippies to hang out and do drugs, etc... right now, however, it's just a big rock on the corner with houses all around... and apparently you get fined $100 if you're caught climbing it.

I was told by a pleasant clerk this is not done in the local offices or online, he directed me to call customer service and they will issue my refund. I did this and was told that yes, the local offices can issue refunds and he should have done that. The customer service agent advised me to complete a refund request online or go to another local postal office to receive my refund. I chose to go to Lake City postal office where the postal clerk was well informed and efficient, having me complete a refund form and promptly refunded the cost of the PM express. Had I been helped at Wedgwood, my time would have been saved from calling USPS (waiting 15 minutes to speak to someone) and then having to go to Lake City for my refund.

The selection is great, offering popular books not often found at other libraries. The children's section is thoughtfully prepared, giving parents and caregivers the chance to peruse books, CDs, DVDs and still watch their children as they read or play with large LEGO-style blocks. Puzzles and other creative, learning toys are also available. Especially cool is that there is a section in the children's area which maintains a selection of books that have won various awards!

The hours say they are open until 2:00 pm on Saturday, but that is apparently the precise moment that the woman behind the counter turns into a pumpkin, not actually the time at which the public is no longer able to access their "services". So if you arrive, as we did, at 1:30, but due to slow service or people ahead of you getting their 19 children their first passport you do not make it to counter before 2:00 pumpkin time...NO SERVICE FOR YOU, COMRADE! Today, after waiting for 24 minutes and being told multiple times that we would be the last customer to be helped, the blond woman behind the counter decided that with more than 6 minutes left that the family ahead of us was her last customer. No apology. No empathy. Just "get your stuff and get out". Oh, you can pack up all the stuff and go to 23rd and Jackson. Or the Sevorstipol Work Camp. YES, CITIZEN CHIEF! It also doesn't help that the advice that you get on the State Department website is contradicted by the UNSC. According to the Feds, if you have a passport, a birth certificate is NOT required...but this is not so per the UNSC apparatchiks. You must have birth certificate, and copy of drivers licenses, and blood sample...what...noooo blood sample? 23rd AND JACKSON FOR YOU! Take my advice. Avoid this place and save yourself the show trial.

The study rooms and chairs which have replaced books are still little used. I hope they remove some chairs and replace new shelves. The parking lot is smaller due to removing 4 slots. Yesterday I was able to park no problem but trying to get there was blocked by over 400 people walking on sidewalk for a Pokemon-Go event. I forgot how events can block traffic and make getting there a major hassle.

They used to just have microfilm to look through, but now they have online access to most everything and microfilm as a backup. they have census records, war pension records, immigration records, Native American records, etc. They also have a helpful staff and usually have a couple of very helpful and knowledgeable volunteers. On my latest expedition, several weeks ago, one of the volunteers helped me track down the pension index record for my Great Grandfather. This was no small task and I had tried several times before. I need the record to try and get the Veterans Administration to give me a marker for his unmarked grave in Calvary Cemetery in Seattle. He was a volunteer during the Sioux Indian uprising in 1862 and all I had been able to find before were direct civil war records, which he didn't partake in. They are open Monday through Friday from 7:45 A.M. to 4:15 P.M and Second Saturday each month, 9 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.
