Serious Sauces I…read morestumbled upon some treats manufactured by Scaff Brothers. The goodies were F & J Brand. This local favorite set up shop @ the annual Crusin' into Summer Festival in Rocky Ford. We were lured by the signs of salsa and sauces. Just my cup of tea! We browsed and sampled a few saucy concoctions. The first victim was the habanero salsa and it had great flavor and packed a good punch of hot lovin'. YUM! Since my dad was already sending us some of his special habanero salsa via USPS, then it was fitting to grab a few other essentials. The cantaloupe salsa tasted good but needed a little heat. You all know I need things to burn my senses. I was eye balling the watermelon syrup for the longest time but the I fought the urge to grab that sugary bottle. Besides, they said their sauces can be found in the local food market. SCORE! I'll just have to try that watermelon out after I snag a bottle during my next grocery trip. So, what did I end up purchasing?? A jar of Habanero Garlic and some Habanero Hot Sauce. YES, it's that serious! Both were good but could use some more heat. Flavor wise, their excellent. I guess I'm use to some serious kick your tongue action. We talked it up with the two manning the booth and found that there is also a shop in La Junta. I assumed Scaff Brothers is where it's located but then again, I'm a lost pup when it comes to the area. I'll have to copy & paste this same review for their actual store when I figure it all out. Nonetheless, if this stuff is made by SB's then kudos to them for supplying these bad boys to the masses of common folk in town.

Looking for fresh flowers to take to a relatives graveside, this small town had a grocery store,…read moreand that's about it. As luck had it, we found some fresh flowers, and was able to pick up a couple of bundles very fresh. The grocery store, was small, with all the name brands, and some off brands, prices were cheap considering they were the only one in town. But nothing around but farms, so I guess the prices had to be controlled. Even had some nice looking fresh fruits and veggies.

Grew up going to this grocery store. It's the only one in town with the next closest being half an…read morehour's drive. It serves its purpose and has what you need. Maybe the prices are a little higher than chain stores but during the growing season the produce is local; as in from the fields outside of town to the produce department! The meat is always fresh and the guys in the meat department are always accommodating when you want something special. Numerous times I have called them and asked them to slice up some roasts for beef jerky and they always have it ready when we come down to visit family. So you can't get some of the things that you can get at larger stores...but you can get whatever you need and want to make great meals from a local source!

Local Market We're…read morespoiled to have one, YES, one market in this little town we call Rocky Ford. It's not big nor does it have a grand selection of each type of item offered. The selection is good enough for me and the folks here. If we wanted more over priced stuff with choices that'll blow your head off, then drive over to La Junta for some Wal-Mart action. But when your just @ home and need a few good (common) ingredients, Rocky Ford Food Market will usually fit the bill!! The employees are pretty nice but could use a good managerial hand to whip the store into a more crackin' place. Cleanliness is descent to say the most. In my opinion, the only thing this place could really use is more of a fresh produce selection. They aren't fancy like the larger markets that more populated cities are use too. No organic selections or "exotic" finds. Strictly the basics. Some getting use to if your a snob about your grocer. Think of a downsized Stater Brothers, if you will. It's definitely not even close to a Whole Foods Market, that's for sure! I still dig it.

But, we hadn't been able to find a breakfast downtown and we were headed home and hungry. There was a nice lady back at the hot trays in the back (you know - aluminum pans of food under a hot light). She was making a BBQ rib sandwich that looked good for the fellow in front of us. When we asked about it - she said we could have one or try one of the sandwiches she had just made and put up front. We did that and - GOOD EATS ensued. Simple food, but very tasty.
