Warren's, you dirty beautiful little beast! The walls are covered in maroon paisley with a texture. The juke box is nothing but oldies - Muddy Waters, Etta James, Billie Holiday, Arethra Franklin, etc. Although - it's not very loud at all. The whole place is dim and intimate. It's the kind of bar you see in shows where they have a "regular" bar. If I lived downtown, I'd be at this little place all the time. The have so many places to sit, whether you are on a date or with a group of 10. We sat, the four of us, and drank while playing card games. The table behind us had 10 people and they were loud and hilarious, two tables over were a couple on a date. There were all races, creeds, colors, ages, of people here. I've only been here a few times over the past year since I don't live in H-town anymore, but it's always a good place to have a few drinks. I came here with my friend after leaving buffalo wild wings during halftime of the the UT - Bama championship game of 2010. He was so depressed that Mccoy got injured and that UT was gonna lose. We didn't know where to go, but what better place to drown your sorrows than Warren's Inn. They make great martini's here, extra dirty. It's just an old time bar, with an actually nice ambiance. it's really quiet, and seems to be full of mostly old timers. We ordered a few Ketel one dirty martinis, and got some chips to snack on. I think they are one of the oldest bars in Houston. Just goes to show you that the more things change, the more they stay the same. read more

We went to this place under the impression that it was great. The bartender was an ass and only concerned with the local folk he sees all the time to start. His drink he said was the old fashioned, he made it in under 30seconds with no love and it tasted horrible, I actually left half of it on the bar top which is rare (like never). I would have gave a negative rating alone if I could but he did know some history to the place...... not much but enough to satisfy my curiosity. If you want a fancified bar go somewhere else. If you want an adult bar with a great oldies jukebox, cigarette machine (no smoking inside though) and strong ass drinks...go here! Order at the bar. There is no table service. Run a tab but don't forget to get your card back at the end of your fun. Jukebox is classic blues, country oldies and eclectic jams some don't care for. But you will find yourself singing along after a while. And it's not so loud that you can't carry on a conversation. Yes! Big, beautiful wooden horseshoe bar and a few long tables to gather. AMAZING CUSTOMER SERVICE. The sign outside caught our eye and made us want to come in for a short drink. Would by no means class this as a dive bar!!!! We ended up sitting in Warren's from 11am until 6pm during a hot Houston summer day, came for the drinks but stayed for the company! Mike the bartender made the day fly by, he showed us how to make drinks, explained different spirits to us, experimented with making new drinks from our home country that he hasn't heard of before, and was fantastic company! The bar is small, so we were able to speak with other customers and have a great time with them as well! Lots of character, the jukebox was a fantastic addition, we had a great time singing together and dancing around! Menu and drinks were very cheap, but the fantastic service warranted a big tip. Some people embrace change, and some people shy away from it. It seems that the owners of Warren's Inn like keeping things just the same, and that is fine by me. From the smoke eater above the door to the Liberace poster on the wall, the place looks the EXACT same as it did years ago when I first stepped foot in here. Not a single bar stool has changed. This place is the opposite of pretentious. You don't go here to be seen, you come here to sit down in a nicely lit space, have a good drink and chat with a friend at a normal decibel. You won't find any hipsters here, but maybe a few seasoned regulars chatting up the barkeep. When you go, be sure to check out the jukebox in the corner. Because Warren's is rarely packed, it's pretty easy to actually hear the songs you played on the jukebox (as opposed to waiting for hours to finally get to hear them). Lady, just shut up and make the drinks! I love going to this part of town. I used to be a fairly regular customer when I lived in the area. I talk this place up to my friends and they take my reviews seriously. Now, I've always known that the short older bartender is a bit testy but she doesn't usually give me grief. The regulars who are literally there every time I go are much more annoying to me. They take up the whole bar, they bitch and gossip, and worse, they distract the bartender from taking my order. We were there probably there 2 hours and put some money in the juke box (which didn't play my songs right away) and even paid cash for the drinks. Each time my friends came back to the table with their drinks, they looked disturbed and upset because the bartender was bitchy. Hey lady, it's time to retire!!! Stop being so bitchy to my friends. I'm bringing you business. I think that the bartender is a friend to Caroline (I think that's her name), the owner who I think still lives upstairs. Other than that, there is no reason to keep an old crabby lady working the bar. I also think, there are enough regulars to keep the place open. Overall, don't piss your customers off. Warren's seems to be a popular haunt for wedding parties due to its proximity to The Magnolia Ballroom. In fact, I helped a pair of close friends (the bride and groom) and several of their bridesmaids and groomsmen descend on this low-key, drunken dive bar one Saturday evening immediately after their reception. The bride didn't bother to change out of her dress. I wish I'd taken a picture of her in her beautiful dress, standing out front drinking a beer and smoking a cigarette. Classic! I've been several other times sans a "wedding parade." Not as fun, but still wonderful. I love this building: the high tin-stamped ceilings, the beautiful curved wooden bar, the garish turquoise exterior, and iron balcony. It was built in the 1860s as the Fox-Kuhlman Building, later became a restaurant, The Quatre Saisons, and Warren's in the 70s. It's located on Market square, the original downtown Houston, so there are quite a number of mid-1800s buildings that have mostly been converted into bars and restaurants. If you go to Warren's, you must stop in La Carafe. I can't imagine going to one bar without going to the other. The jukebox isn't my favorite in town, but it is a friend in its own right. If jukeboxes had personalities (which they do), this one would be a stereotypical classic-rock Houstonian with optional pony tail. A little bit country, a little bit rock, with a dash of cajun. It's like an old buddy that you can talk smack with over a few beers and shots of whiskey. A few words of caution: parking in the area is a little tedious on the weekends. All I have to say is that Warren's serves up some seriously stiff drinks. We wandered in on Christmas night and each ordered an Old Fashioned. Two drinks in, we struck up a conversation with the couple next to us and the four of us decided to order one more each. Uh oh. So you've found yourself in Market Square, possibly licking your fingers clean of the tzatziki sauce from your gyro at Niko Nikos and you think to yourself "damn, I need a drink". Naturally you look up and a brilliant teal building is before you and it feels like fate. Walking underneath the old school neon sign, appreciating the black iron work that has an almost NOLA feel to it, you anticipate greatness. Opening up the door you get a big fat WTF feeling. It's not very often that you can discern an obvious disconnect in vibe from exterior to interior but Warren's nailed it. Every time I stop in I feel like I need a handy wipe and that ruler they used to use at middle school dances. It's fairly dingy-even for a dive bar-and crowded. Oh, so horribly crowded. The bingo hall-esk tables are always packed, the gazebo usually retains the most drunky of drunks and the bar has a line backed up with people waiting to place a drink order. I've been to Warren's about 4 times now, on various days/times and something about it never lights my fire. Market Square has exploded with new businesses so I am finding it harder and harder to give Warren's that "one last shot". read more

If I could give this place 2.5 stars I would. I'm so middle of the road with this one. Okay so the scene is saturday afternoon.. around 6-7 getting ready for a little drinking before a concert. We walk in and see about 5 people chilling around the bar and the bartender kinda just stairs with a small "hi" Bartender: Okay so I was preferred for the "rude" from reading the positive and negative reviews on yelp. I understand that some places just have the vibe. The thing that irked me about the "rudeness" was how uppity it seemed. It was almost like the bartender and her pal at the bar were the cool kids at school and everyone who walked in was sitting at their lunch table. This vibe was fun and cute back before I could drive a motored vehicle or smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol.. But why are grown people still acting this way. Its more boring and annoying than anything else. Drinks: I had a gin with a splash of tonic basically. I love a place with a strong drink and this was it, But the drinks are not very cheap especially since it wasn't even night fall yet. $7 for a well gin.... i guess. Overall the bartender and crowd seem so "try hard" that they become asses. Being that it was a Tuesday, the place was populated with regulars that were not too excited to see us. We got the serious stare down. I can't say much that hasn't already been said about Warren's; it's great, the bartenders pour great drinks (and BTW, if they start seeing your face on the regular, you will get great service), the jukebox is fabulous, can't beat their prices, blah blah blah etc. What everyone forgets about Warren's is that they have the best priced food downtown. There's a soup and sandwich every day. It's perfect for lunchtime - get food, have a drink! - or when you're smashed and desperately need to get something in your stomach. Ah. Warren's. It's a Houston classic, and for good reason. First of all, let's start with the drinks. As mentioned by a good number of the reviewers, the drinks here are stiff. This place has one of the heaviest pours in Houston and considering the amount of booze that goes into each drink, the prices are pretty decent as well. Next, there's the jukebox, one of my favorites in town. For $5.00 you get twenty-five plays and the jukebox is incredible. It has Marty Robbins, Peter Gabriel, Kenny Chesney, Dave Brubeck, Van Morrison, Sade, and a wide range of others. It's pretty easy to find twenty-five plays here. The bar itself is on the small size, but it always feels more cozy than cramped. There's a small little raised gazebo-like area to one side along with several tables, both large and small. It's a hole in the wall, but a nice hole in the wall. When I visit Warren's, though, I'm always sure to sit at the bar. There are a few long-time bartenders, but there is at least one in particular that is - how to put it - not exactly friendly. Since the staff doesn't actually leave the bar (at least not that I've ever seen), sitting at the bar is your best bet of being served. I also suggest being very nice to the bartenders, just to be on the safe side. Due to the not-exactly friendly service, I'd rate this bar closer to a 4.5, but the great drinks, the awesome jukebox, and the cozy feel, easily overcome that. Add in the fact that this place is always open until 2:00 AM even on holidays (I met a friend there after holiday dinner this past Thanksgiving), and you get an excellent bar with its own distinct personality. read more

I have been coming to this bar since I turned 21, and even have a nickname there if you ask Katie. The drinks are strong and the prices are fair. Their main drinks are spirits and cocktails. It has a great atmosphere , not too loud, not too quiet. The decor makes me feel sophisticated, but the people are down to earth and very friendly. You can order some of their fine soup or chili as well. I have never had a bad experience at this bar. This bar is good for groups of 5-6. They can get pretty busy on a Friday night however or sometimes it is random when they get crowded. I'm sure I'm not the last to mention this, but the jukebox selection is excellent and can be romantic if you're with the right person. Warren's is a a landmark cocktail lounge in downtown Houston. They were making martinis, old-fashioneds, manhattans, etc long before the fancy Montrose and Heights drinkeries came on the scene. They didn't just fabricate their interior to look old, it really is old. Some of the sour reviews on here seem weird to me. Especially the one who said it had a NOLA feel on the outside but when she walked in it turned to WTF. I would like to ask WHERE-T-F she has been in NOLA? I guess she was expecting Commander's Palace inside? Another one says, don't waste your time on high quality cocktails because he prefers to just have his whiskey straight? That's really your choice isn't it? So is how much you imbibe by the way. I think what we have here is a disconnect between older folks who know how to appreciate a finely prepared cocktail (sip it) and the younger generation who needs the nanny state to always set their limits for them. The biggest complaint was the overcrowded conditions on a Saturday night. So I won't worry about Warrens too much and hope they never change even if the Market Square fills up, perhaps momentarily, with millennials. read more

Want to blackout on the cheap? Then this place is for you! Over-pours are what this place is known for. Although the bartenders seem to pride themselves on making high quality cocktails, don't waste your time... might as well order that bourbon straight instead of waiting for the sugar cube to absorb those bitters in your Old Fashioned! "Don't try to church it up for me, barkeep - just gimme the hard stuff!" I love dive bars- don't get me wrong... but this place takes divey to a whole new level. It's filled with regulars that epitomize day-drinker depression. The past few times we went here, the bar was filled with straight-busted "Suicide Girls" rejects. Being Polo shirt/Sperry types, we found ourselves very out of place and feeling mighty awkward. The bartenders have always been pretty helpful, but expect to have to flag them down if you're not a regular. PROS - One star for being owned by the same owner as La Carafe. - One star for the dedication of the bartenders to pour stiff drinks whilst throwing all caution to the wind as far as taste and TABC are concerned. - One star for price. I'm not sure how long this bar has been here, but I hope it's still here 10-20 years from now and I hope they don't change a damn thing about it - not the brown panel walls, the juke box, or their notorious heavy pours. They could, however, fix that lingering moldy piss smell that cloud the tiny corridor leading to the restroom. Love that I can always come here and see a great mixture of people. I'm particularly fond of the older patrons (read: older than your mother) who always have me thinking "I hope I'm still holding it down like him/her at this time on a Saturday night when I'm their age." When you walk into Warren's you can immediately tell this bar has one focus: cocktails. Its dark and overly wood paneled, but in the center is the bar with row after row of martini and short glasses - into these they will liberally pour strong liquor and not much mixer. Around the bar you will probably find a solitary businessman or lawyer unwinding from a stressful day by drinking drink after cheap drink. It is unlikely the place will be crowded. I know I have only been here for a couple months, and I really haven't tried all there is to try here, and I have only been to this place just the once. That being said, I do believe a superlative is in order. Yes, this is the best bar I have found in Houston. Allow me to explain. You walk in, and instantly you feel as if a bunch of hipsters just got transported back in time to a swanky saloon-esque place. The only people who haven't stayed the same age are the barkeeps. They seem to have aged well, but aged indeed This place even has a raised gondola-ish seating area that looks over the rest of the bar. The drinks are properly strong and the patrons all seemed really chill (even the one who sort of tried to hit on me... with her opening line being about how she liked her own dress). Extremely unprofessional staff/bartenders. We stopped here on Friday night and on more than one occasion one male bartender actively ignored me and the other male bartender refused to make me a drink because he was "off the clock". I told the female bartender I was unhappy with the service at that time. I found out today through several sources that the female bartender has been asking around about me (I have a unique last name). She said I was "drunk angry" about the bartenders not moving fast enough and was unhappy with the tip I left after telling her I was unhappy with the service that night. This is beyond unprofessional and appalling that Warren's would let their staff talk bad about their customers. I won't be returning as there are lots of choices within a block radius and I do not support businesses with employees who treat their customers poorly. read more

I love a good dive bar, but this one wasn't very welcoming. When we walked through the doors, I swear I heard a record scratch, then silence as everyone at the bar turned to stare at us. It reeks of smoke even though no one was smoking. We ordered a round of drinks, and my Dos Equis was in what I think is the Christmas bottle... months after the holiday has passed. Maybe it is better to stick with the mixed drinks because the bartender did know how to make a good stiff cocktail We still had a great time, but I don't see a reason to visit again. My only advice to people on their first trip here, "Do NOT order a beer!" They quickly find out that these drinks are perfectly on par with the ones I make myself at home.....when I'm half in the bag.....and forget how to measure. Amazing! I stick to a nice Gin and Tonic just to keep it classic, and it just feels right with the red velvet wallpaper. I'm in love with this place. It is such a wonderful place to spend a weekend afternoon. Reading these other reviews, I wonder if I went to a Warren's in the Bizzaro parallel universe. Most other reviews talk about a place with an awesome rustic ambiance and laid back vibe, where all ages, races, genders and classes leave their demographics at the pub door and become one with Drink. I must have gotten lost. This place should be called The Vampire Pub, it's so dark and drab. I know the 70s look the place is going for, but we did have electricity and lighting in the 70s, no? Pubs didn't look like they were exclusively furnished by Junkyard Couture, did they? The bartender wasn't friendly, maybe even a little rude to our party. Perhaps vampires enjoy a little stank with their service, I dunno. She was the only one serving about 20 patrons, so maybe she was overwhelmed. Not my fault though. Finally, I was freezing. Forcing patrons to guzzle spirits to raise their body temperature isn't cool man; turn up the heat a tad. This place has potential (their dirt cheap strong cocktails are right on!), but potential is good for 2 stars, anymore stars would require lighting, heat, comfy & clean furniture or good customer service at least. read more

The reviews for this place are 100% based on service received. Full-disclosure- I didn't read any reviews for this place before I went. I just went with a date because we had been at La Carafe and wanted to switch it up. Hearsay, my usual post-carafe (or pre-carafe depending on the night) go-to was packed, so we walked down to Warren's. It was around 10 on a Thursday night and, aside from Hearsay, downtown was expectedly dead. We walked to Warren's.The decor is like a sports-bar that is past it's glory days and there was no music on. We decided to give it a try and took a seat at the fairly empty bar. A couple on one end and a group of friends, who were obvious regulars, hanging out around the other end of the bar- and behind the bar. This made it kind of confusing when it came to order. Who was the bartender, where was the bartender, is this place really even open? It turns out he was outside on his cell phone. The bartender seemed pretty wrapped up in doing his own thing rather than trying to engage us, which I kind of understand since it was a slow night, but it was obvious we'd never been and he didn't come across as very inviting. We (very naively) asked about beers on tap. He said he didn't have any beers on tap and just slid a very limited beer/wine menu across at us. We each got a Saint Arnold's Amber, chatted amongst ourselves, had to flag the bartender down to pay, and left -without as much as a goodbye. Before we left someone fired up the juke box and played that new Kanye song that is everywhere. Not sure if that's the normal music style here, but it wasn't what we were in the mood for then and made leaving even easier. My few trips to this "fancy dive" have been unique. This puts Warren's at the top of my list. I've been to Warren's twice with friends. The first time with friends from Austin, we entered to find nearly every bar patron wearing red vests and matching bow ties. A wedding after party I suppose. We met a charming young man with an exquisite waxed moustache. The drinks were stiff. The interior, dark and covered head to toe with polished walnut. And the half gazebo.. classy!. The second time, with a friend from New York, we entered to find that unfortunately, everyone was not wearing vests. No matter, it was a momentous occasion. As serendipitous as my previous trip, it was to be topped. 30 minutes post arrival several dozen Santa Clauses stumble in. It was the weekend before Christmas so we shouldn't have been so surprised to find ourselves in the midst of a drunken "running of the Santa's" pit stop. As before, "red" everywhere. On our way out, my friend was accosted outside on the sidewalk and interviewed by a thoroughly inebriated Jesus Christ... camera crew in tow, mic in hand. Seriously. Without a doubt my favorite bar inside the loop. this is not a bar for hop heads or grape lovers this is a place strictly for the liquor drinkers. and for all you people who say the service is horrible, the staff must not have liked you because they are always awesome to me, they have never forgotten my name even though sometimes it is a while in between visits. I don't appreciate: -slow service (especially when i'm one of 4 people in the joint) -no one remotely close to me own age (not to mention a discernible lack of cute hipster girls) -Bush supporters (especially when they must preface a discussion with me by saying, "i'm not racist, i'm engaged to a black woman.") Warren's lives up to its name: you're doing the downtown hustle, you're on Market Square, lots of bars and restaurants around, then you walk into the dark and enveloping place where rabbits breed or abound. The cozy den at Warren's houses a vintage jukebox stocked with jazz greats, a curious little raised gazebo on one side where you can ensconce yourself and observe the commoners below, and at the back, the venerable bar staffed by friendly yet stern bartenders who pour some of the stiffest drinks in Houston. These winter nights are cold and bleak indeed once you leave the Warren's womb. And after those drinks, you might not know exactly where you're breeding or abounding. read more

Nice bar, and nice bar staff. this was my first time visiting Warren's, and I quite enjoyed myself. The drinks were good and cheap ($8 for a draft St Arnold's and cherry vodka sour). The bathrooms were clean and the jukebox had a steady stream of Al Green going, which I loved. the whole place has a late 70s vibe, the TVs were old, and even the bartender's outfit was vintage looking. I had really good company so my only complaint... it was very dark, so dark that a lady sitting at the bar fell off her stool and hit the back of her head on the floor. Not sure how much she had been drinking but she didn't look drunk to me. read more

Out on a Tuesday night with some of my favorite peeps; this place was recommended by someone that works in the area, and I was disappointed with my experience. Great location, however the music player or whatever you call it wasn't working, and it didn't have that kinda, let's just hang out here vibe; instead I got sleepy and decided to bounce out of there with my group. The only thing that bar had going good for itself is...the drinks weren't weak! read more
