This was home to Guy Gibson and the Dambuster officers in WWII.Petwood was requisitioned by the RAF during WWII. In the latter stages of the War it was used as the Officers Mess for the famous Dambusters, 617 Squadron, who were then based at nearby RAF Woodhall Spa. (Now a few huts but open to the public and worth a look if you are interested and The Blue Bell Inn, an ancient roadside inn at Tattershall Thorpe, in addition to serving excellent ales and food, has Dambuster connections. On the ceiling can be found signatures of members of 617 Squadron.) In the grounds can be found a dummy practice bouncing bomb, as was used in the Dambusters raid. Inside the hotel, the Squadron Bar is dedicated to 617 Squadron and has memorabilia from the period. Over the bar can be found the branch of a tree. This was found impaled in the fuselage of a Lancaster. The memorial is nearby. Ok this is where you laugh at me. I was doing a craft fair here. At dusk I slipped outside and sat on an old table to have a cigarette. There was a long, high edge by me and a gap then more edge. Across from where I sat a man came. he had grey trousers on and a white shirt with rolled up sleeves and walking at his side a black dog. He smiles, winked and waved at me. I waved and smiled back. he went behind the edge but never passed the gap. I ran to the gap..no-one there. I went inside and told the barman and he said You have seen Guy Gibson. Most of the female staff have..he likes the ladies. I am adding to this for my guide to ghosts in Lincolnshire: A few years ago I was invited, by the RAF, to take my stall to the anniversary of the Dambusters Raids at the Dam in Derbyshire where they used to practice. Many old Lancaster pilots were there and chatted to me about their time in Lincs. One related a spooky story to me though not ghosts of the past.. He said the plane was shot up very badly..he was a gunner and only he and the pilot were still alive. He went to stand behind the pilot as they were lost. Instruments had gone. They saw a river below and rights on the right and realised with relief it was the Humber and the lights were Hull..almost home. Suddenly he saw a huge concrete structure dead ahead and they were about to hit it. He yelled a warning and covered his eyes. They had come through all this and were still going to die. Nothing happened. He opened his eyes and asked the pilot how he had missed it. The pilot had seen nothing. When they built the Humber Bridge, decades later, he realised that was what he had seen that night. The future! Guy Gibsons dog: At Raf Woodhall Spa itelf: A photograph of a group of airmen revealed a black dog standing at the end of the line up that was not spotted at the time by neither the photographer nor any of the pilots. It was later suggested it was 'Nigger', Guy Gibson's pet dog that had been run over a few months before. During the 1980s, a team of engineers working at night spotted a pilot in 'old flying gear' walking along a corridor. One of the team went to investigate, only to find that the pilot had disappeared. And finally: IN DAMBUSTERS FILM Sharp-eyed viewers may spot the ghost of Nigger running through the trees at the end of the film (where Gibson is talking to Wallis at Scampton) - no dog was known to be on the base when the film was made, so the identity of the animal seen on film remains a mystery.

They even looked around for a plug converter in the middle of the night so I could charge my electronics. We had dinner in the Dambusters room where right above the bar they have the actual tree that went through one of their planes! Sidetracked again sorry...OK the food was very tasty and the portions were just right. For breakfast you can stick with cereal, juice/coffee, fruits, pastries or you can also order eggs "your way." The rooms weren't small like most hotels in the UK so you definitely don't feel closed in. Plus they have WiFi!

This Premier Inn is located 2 miles south of Lincoln, on the edge of the village of Canwick. We…read morestayed there in part because they have a free on-site car park, whereas the one in the centre of Lincoln doesn't. We stayed in a Premier Plus room, which comes with free Wifi, USB charging points, and slightly nicer decor (they have been refurbished recently). They are also located in a quieter part of the hotel. We found it to be clean, very comfortable, and I liked having a bath as well as a shower. The rooms have excellent sound proofing - we didn't hear any traffic noise from the adjacent main roads. The rooms come with an ironing board, iron, and hair dryer, plus extra pillows if you need them. The only we had is that the heating/air-conditioning fan was a little too noisy to use throughout the night. Not a problem for us in March, but in the summer it might be irritating. The other issue is that there's no lift, so if you have a lot of luggage a ground floor room might be better. Breakfast is served in the adjacent Beefeater restaurant. This was okay, but the cooked items were a little dried out on the hot plates: putting out less to match turnover might have been better. But the choice was fine, both of continental and cooked items. Staff were very friendly, and helped out when we'd muddled up the wifi codes (you get two codes if you are staying for two days, and each code is valid for 3 devices, but this wasn't completely clear on the meail, which you get once you have checked in). The hotel is just across the road from the entrance to the International Bomber Command memorial and visitor attraction. It's a 5 minute walk (they charge for parking, so worth thinking about). Overall, we had a very good stay and would return.

A typical Premier Inn, with a Table Table restaurant attached where breakfast is served if you have booked B&B and other meals can be had. Rooms are a standard layout from what I've experienced. Great, comfortable double bed, with two types of pillows and a duvet, rather than sheets. A TV with freeview is in the room, as well as mini kettle with tea and coffee. Bathroom is immaculate, cleaning is great here. For any single female travellers, there are some nice touches which I have not experienced before. Location of room is considered for you and also on check in, staff will hand you your room key/card but your room number is written on a card, rather than announced to all and sundry in reception for security reasons. Breakfast is fine - continental options available (£5.95) or full breakfast (£8.95) which includes full, continential, the works. I like how I can choose what my breakfast will consist of so as I'm gluten free the continential option is lousy for me but I can take a cooked breakfast and eat as much bacon as I want. Dinner at TableTable - paid separately is fine. It's not fine dining but pub food and staff are able to advise me what options I can have and prices are good so its all good :-)

The gardens themselves are very pretty and great for picnics. They also have an open air swimming pool where the water is warmer than a bath. Tennis courts, bowling green, cricket and a golf club. Then go for a walk in the woodlands and see the tearooms..something of a bygone era. Here too was the Spa and hospital. In the middle of the woods is The Kinema in the Woods situated in the centre of the Pinewoods is one of the treasures of Woodhall Spa and is completely unique. Housed in a converted cricket pavilion, when it opened in 1922 it was one of the first cinemas in Britain. It is the only cinema in the country to employ back projection and also offers regular entertainment on an original Compton Captain Organ. Little shops and cafes in the main street where you can get a meal or a cream tea. The shops are arcaded and look as if they should be at the seaside. Some nice hotels and pubs too. This is Dambuster territory and here they lived. Well worth going for a day out as there is something for every age.

The breakfast room had a lovely view of the turn in the canal. You can easily walk into Nottingham centre along the canal too, where you can get to the cool bars that are on the canal. If you go along canal the opposite way you will meet the Trent river and have a smashing view of Notts Forests City grounds. It's a nice walk too, during which we saw a family of Canada Geese. I guess it'd be a pretty handy hotel for the of Notts Forests games, as well as any of the cricket games at Trent Bridge.

I stayed here on a Saturday night while I attended a festival in Lincoln city centre. Just across the bridge is the student union and concert venue the Engine Shed, so this hotel really is perfectly placed. Upon arrival we were given cookies, as is the standard in Hilton hotels, and the lady at the desk (can't remember her name unfortunately) demonstrated brilliant customer service. The room was clean and airy, and I honestly think that the bed allowed me the most comfortable sleep I've had in my entire life! I was asleep within seconds of closing my eyes! The bathroom in our room was large which is a nice touch as it's often the case in hotels that they fall on the shorter side.

The hotel staff were so nice, friendly and accommodating and the breakfast was excellent, with the view from the breakfast room towards the Cathedral on the top of the hill. I drove up directly from LHR and it was a nice 3 hour drive with the hotel having it's own parking making easy to check in with luggage. (Note: the hotel parking was additional but not over the top, if you have GPS follow the route all the way to the hotel, you will have to drive on the pedestrian area for a few. yards, but this is allowed for vehicles that need access). For all you history buffs, this is a great destination, the city center itself, Roman ruins, the Cathedral and Castle including the Magna Carta. Its a 20 minute uphill walk to the Cathedral and Castle from the hotel, so everything you need to see is walkable.
