My boyfriend and I come here practically every weekend. This is not because the food is particularly good, but it is serviceable and the staff is a delight to behold. I usually get something Greek, either the salad or the excellent spinach pie. Sometimes we come for breakfast, which is similar to pretty much any mediocre diner breakfast you could get anywhere - undercooked potatoes, overcooked eggs, ungodly delicious toast. The food is okay. Nothing special. Every time we have ever been here the waitresses (because there has never once been a male waiter) are bickering, fighting, talking bad about each other/the job. They are usually nice to the customers and do an OK job. You usually have to ask for refills and ask for your check. My biggest complaint would be the kitchen staff. When you are sitting with your family trying to have a nice meal, all you can hear is the kitchen staff SCREAMING and YELLING, ringing the bell for like 2 mins straight. It's horrible. The only diner (it seems) that will actually substitute fries for a cup of soup and hash-browns for a cup of fruit. They truly do attend to your requests. I'm health conscious and it's nice to know that if I go here with a group of people I can still pick out a meal without leaving parts of it uneaten due to it unhealthy. Food is good! They are fast as well. One of the only places where the soup doesn't taste cheap/fake. The specials are worth the price because it's a lot of food, I usually split the specials with a second person & both of us are stuffed from one meal. Portion sizing, excellent. The coffee was great which is always a plus when visiting any diner in the state. Best kept secret in NJ. We have always loved diners and have stopped in many states to eat at them. Nostalgia and curiosity at first. Many were good. We use to drive past this one on the way to visit our Son and family. We finally stopped a few years ago and were blown away. Great menu, fast service even When they are busy ( which is always ). The food was excellent. We discovered that there is parking in the rear, drive up the right side of the building and park out back. In from out of town for lunch. Stopped in with 3 other people. 3 of us had the Rueben and the other had an omelette. The Rueben was open face and was huge and delicious!! Side of fries or sweet potato fries too much to finish. The omelette was more meat than egg and was also huge. Portions are generous, service is fast and friendly. I wouldn't expect anything mind-blowing, as with most diners, but Washington Diner will provide massive portions of good food. Seriously, you won't be able to finish it. The owner and crazy Italian/Greek regulars are a blast to be around too. My only complaint is that the menu is about the size of a DSM manual, so I would recommend a week of planning before you go. Despite not having a sign that displayed the name of this place, the inside was very clean and newly remodelled which was quite redeeming for the lack of sign. read more
