The Christ Church is not only packed with history but one of the most beautiful churches I've seen on our travels. That is saying a lot, because I've seen gorgeous churches all over Europe. This one is different because it has no stained glass. This is because the colonists were literate and didn't need the illustrations that stained glass provided for church goers to 'read' . The Palladian Chancel Window literally took my breath away. The guide told me that George Washington (who had a pew there) loved it so much, he had one installed in his dining room at Mount Vernon. Two different docents were on hand to converse with us, answer our questions, and share the historic details.

I was going through a lot that summer, and I remember sitting in the stunning sanctuary listening to Rev. Huffstetler preaching and feeling this absolute peace settle over me. Rev. Garner is incredible - his sermons are full of the Spirit, rich with biblical and historical knowledge, and never make you feel like you have to check your brain at the door to be a good Christian. The young adult group is vibrant and multi-faceted. We hold Bible studies, luncheons, and parties, and our friendship extends past the church doors. The LGBT group is almost entirely men, and mostly 40+, but as a 20-something lesbian I can say that they are perfectly friendly and welcome to new members. We need a nudge in a missional direction as a group, but for friends you couldn't ask for more. Many of the members are heavily involved in community-based missions which make this church ideal for a person who wants to volunteer their time through faith-based endeavors. We help with Wintershelter (warm beds for the homeless), Manna (actually started here at First), The Other Carpenter (helping fix homes in low-income areas), and an annual mission trip to New Orleans every year after Katrina - as well as almost anything you can imagine. The music is beautiful, the sanctuary is gorgeous, the people are incredible, the mission is solid, the sermons are empowering, the social life is vibrant -- there is nothing I do not love about First Presbyterian Church. With my dad in town this year for Good Friday I looked to google to help me find the closest fish fry that we could attend. I was shocked, but in hindsight not surprised, to learn that a Lenten Fish Fry is mostly a midwest custom, as google was returning results located in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Ohio. Thankfully, I stumbled upon St Simon the Cyrenian Church. This was a fish fry done right! It was located in the community room of their church, although you could smell the fish frying from 3 blocks away. Walking in the door we were greeted by no less than 5 people who were ridiculously excited that we had stopped in. I am hesitant to go into random churches lest I be harassed about joining or forced into praising Jesus, but there was none of that here. This group was simply throwing a fish fry for the community and were thrilled that the community was stopping by. We each had 4 pieces of fish, 2 pieces of corn bread, green beans, mac and cheese - the REAL mac and cheese, with real cheese and bread crumbs on top- and a piece of pound cake for $8. If you can beat this price for anything anywhere let me know. The woman in charge told me that they put this on every year, and I guaranteed her that she would see me again on Good Friday 2011.

I had so many questions before night one, so let me help you out here. The pews were first come, first serve but seated. Everyone sat the whole time. It was was a chilly night so we had our jackets off in our seats. The venue only holds about 80 people. Each row seats 6, 3 on one side and 3 on the other, unless you want to squish. Biggest question: the drink and food situation. It's byob. I believe cans only. Past reviews said brown bag, but I just kept my beer cans in my coat pockets and used koozies. They weren't selling food. The only restroom I used was downstairs. It wasn't the cleanest but it was ok. There was one upstairs too that I did not use. A+ for intimacy and sound quality. I hope to see more shows here in the future.
