    The newly constructed Temple
    John C.

Wat lao is a Theravada Buddhist Temple open to Lao, Thai, and Cambodian cultures, as well as others. The facility has recently been renovated and improved greatly! There's is parking on the grounds and along the street. The people are very warm and friendly and is my favorite Oahu Temple to visit.

    Where we pray... :)

She loves going to temples and loves Thai food so I definitely was excited to explore this temple together. Based on the address on Yelp, I got lost for a good 10-15 minutes. I almost gave up but luckily spotted it and had to do a U turn and we finally arrived. So I arrived 10 minutes before the food stalls closed but honestly they stayed opened a bit longer than their closing time. As I saw ppl arrive even later and was able to still make purchases. I do have to say that they do start cleaning, and not everything is available as things were being sold out. They have a table for you to grab utensils and condiments. There are some tables you can sit and eat the food that you purchase. Most of the food I purchased was about $10 each. And you pay each stall that you are at. My mom and I enjoyed everything we ordered, if only we were staying in Hawaii more days, we would definitely come back or even order more. The hard part is that they do not have a website and they are not open every Sunday either. So try calling or just randomly go and pray that it will be opened. I honestly really enjoyed my visit. Both a cool temple to go see and being able to eat authentic Thai food it was an extra bonus. 2 thumbs up from this Yelper. I highly recommend coming here if you have not been. Ordered: *Fried Bananas *Papaya Salad (you can request how spicy you want this) *Pork noodle soup *Sugar Cane Juice *Fish Cake *Water Bottle $1 *Pork spare rib Tips: *Cash Only *Restroom available. *Outside temple street parking in the dirt or pull in and try your luck to find parking.

The name of the temple means "Broken Ridge Temple.". What appears to be a flaw in the construction the roof was lowered because it exceeded the height limitation of the City & County. The temple is magnificent despite the roof's lower height. The grounds are beautiful and abundant with plants especially the variety of mango trees and coconut trees throughout the property. There are statues such as the Statue of Miruk Boddhisatava. There are lotus buds and lovely lotus flowers in bloom and pots of water lilies too. Water is saved in plastic containers and drums. The most interesting sight is the pots of aged miso and shoyu on the roof top below the temple. Highly recommmend a visit to capture the tranquility and beauty of the temple and Palolo Valley.

Set in the lush land of Hauula, the temple is a bit inland from the main road. And most of the residential areas are in small trailer guys behind groves of papaya trees. This particular day we came for the inauguration and watched traditional Cambodian dances. It may seem insignificant to say this - but this day was a deep soul filling commemorative of a people who were almost wiped of their culture by their own governments hands. All the dancers were survived the wrath of Pol Pot's regime. It was a most emotional day as I witnessed several of my Cambodian friends drying the tears from their faces and their family members holding back their own tears. The effects the Khmer Rouge are ever present to this day. It has taken me months to properly reflect on what transpired and the immense growth of the Cambodian people despite the setbacks they have had. I am proud and honored to know survivors, and am blessed to have witnessed their performance this day. They danced a traditional song taught about the days of the week - and the colors of each day represented a temperament and personality trait to coincide with the months. Yup - quite complex! I was stunned and awed! During the feast - a couple of the monks gestured to me, and gifted to my girls their sweets - green tea ice cream and mango ice cream. I did not want to have the monks pass up such a treat but they insisted and showed me with great delight what a blessing they had in seeing my girls grin ear to ear and bless us with a short prayer. And all this done sans words to boot! I bought a t-shirt as part of the fundraising going on for this location. I know I will return to pay my respects because of the survivors I have met, and befriended. All the major framing has been completed, - has been the interior of the temple needing to be finished. Most places we were walking on plywood (am not complaining about that - just this day it was the reality). I look forward to how much the temple develops and thrives in the upcoming years.

So I have to say I had one heck of a night here at the Bon Dance. It was my first one that I've…read moreattended since 2000, back when I was in college! Granted, this evening was not one of just fun and dancing, I only danced twice toward the end of the night because I was helping out with the food booth and the lines and taking food orders. Since obon is a celebration festival to honor our loved ones who have passed and is a time to gather in joy. There is a lantern processional and brief ceremony prior to the start of the dancing. The children get to participate in the lantern parade and some of them wear their obon kimonos and other cute outfits. They all looked great tonight. So all the kids get their lantern with their light and march around the corner from the park to the yagura (musician stand) and then continue to make a circle...Then the fun begins! I was amazed at the number of people that were already there at 5:30 when we showed up to get the food lines going. Wow. Food orders were non-stop for about 2 hours and I watched the andagi line grow longer and longer! (love the andagi Guy!) Chicken Hekka was a great sell and the Chicken curry ran out pretty quick it seemed...Hot dogs wasn't too far behind. I ate Kalua pork and cabbage and got a side order of the noodles. The lunch plate was plentiful, 2 scoops rice, mac salad and the main item. I liked the taste of the kahlua pork but there was a surplus of the juices in my tray...and I don't really care for soggy rice. However, the flavor was great! A little too much greens for my taste as well but the cabbage was cooked just right. The fried noodles were very tasty too and portion that was being given for $4 was quite generous. Of course, I had to try the shave ice...you can totally tell it's not Matsumotos...but, it was made with heart and caring. The ice was made a little in advance, to take care of a long line, but because it was made in advance, the ice had time to sit so it was a little more icy than shaved. The syrup was very tasty and I had a rainbow- strawberry, vanilla, banana- and you could distinctly taste all of the flavors. I was surprised at all the extra offerings- silent auction, country store, farmer's market, and many different vendors selling things from toys to jewelry to aromatherapy oils. It makes me happy to see how the bon dance has grown in terms of the crowds, the extras, and It looked as though everyone was having a blast! I heard people say that this is their favorite bon dance to attend and I hope that it continues to grow and people bring their friends and families back year after year. I'll be there again on Saturday...Where will you be? #Yelp 365 Challenge - 020/365

The lines were RIDICULOUSLY long!!! We waited over 30 minutes to get food and we didn't even try standing in the andagi line!! My family ordered 1 stir fried noodle plate, 2 curry plates, and 1 chicken hekka plate. The curry plate was the best! It had chicken curry with carrots and corn in it! The stir fried noodles I didn't care for because the noodles were really mushy :( The chicken hekka was good with lots of flavor. My brother's girlfriends parents were nice enough to get us andagi so we didn't have to stand in line and I was totally stoked that Da Andagi Guy was making the andagi! Omg hands down the best andagi everrr! I ate like a whole bag of the cinnamon one! Yum!!! Lastly, the dancing! I tried to join in on some of the dances and some were easy, some were hard! I loved that the kids/teens had their own upbeat versions of the traditional dances! Was super cute! Overall, I had a great time!
