We recently moved, having a professional moving company move our grandfather clock. Upon arrival,…read morethe clock did not work correctly. The cords (strings that tie the hammers back when trying to avoid playing, silence the clock, or protect during a move were tangled within the hammers. After untangling, the quarter hour chimes still did not work correctly. Therefore our need for "The Grandfather Clock Doctor". I must admit, I was a sucker for the name chosen by Jeff Goemann for his business. Even though it was 40 minutes from our acreage. I rarely write reviews, but there are several things you need to know if considering using "The Grandfather Clock Doctor". He limits his services to grandfather clocks. You most likely will leave a voicemail. He will call you back to discuss. He prefers house calls. States he doesn't have the room in his shop, but will take the mechanism in, if he needs to. He is listed with Howard-Miller Clock Company as a repair person for their clocks. He has a fee of $85.00 for a house call. Typically, with most service companies I have dealt with, that would be the minimum fee, and will cover a period of time, ie. 30 minutes or one hour. Since he then quoted $85 dollars per hour, I assumed that $85.00 would cover the first hour, which he makes clear, starts from when he leaves home. It does not. It is simply a fee to come look at things. Plus $85.00 for each hour. Starting from when he leaves home, until he returns. Our manual indicates the hands on the clock should only be moved counter-clock-wise. He only moved the hands clock-wise for every movement he made with them. Quite a few. Our manual indicates, you should wear gloves when handling the weights, to avoid getting body oils on them and tarnishing them. Our weights had not been touched with bare hands since our purchase in1975, except by the movers. "The Grandfather Clock Doctor" repeatedly sprayed lubricating oil on the mechanism above the weights. He used a rag as a backstop to protect the opposite side, but nothing to cover the weights, glass and cabinet below where he was working. When I pointed this out to him, he indicated he was using the rag as a backdrop. I advised, that it was not covering below and pointed out the manual's recommendations. This did not change his actions. At the completion, we paid $225.25 for round trip of 80 minutes and 10 - 20 minutes of applying oil to the mechanism. Upon completion, I asked how long the warranty was on his work. The response, "until you see my taillights leaving your driveway." The next day, I left a message that his repair lasted only as long as his warranty. He did not call back to discuss this with us. It has now been 16 days and we still have not hard back from Mr. Goemann. Consider wisely if considering "The Grandfather Clock Doctor" Brian L. Welch, MD
