    Coffee time

Ordered a cortado and almond croissant. The croissant was stale tasting. Not sure if it needed to be re-toasted or what, but it had that day old flavor. It was extremely dense and not flakey at all. I ate about half of it and didn't want to finish. If you've ever had an almond croissant don't you always finish it? Needless to say, wouldn't order a pastry here again. Now the cortado was delicious. Bold and bright, perfect crema. I could've drank another, but refrained so I didn't have heart palpitations. The staff was friendly enough. The inside felt very industrial (which suits the area), yet showcased some vibrant neon art on the walls. All in all would come here for coffee only if in this area. There isn't much else in this part of town.

    Diner mugs!

On our Portland trip we found Water Avenue Coffee in what looked to us like a commercial wholesale district, the kind of place you'd expect to be buzzing with remote workers on weekdays. On this Sunday morning, though, it was almost empty. Most of the surrounding streets were closed for a cycling race, so we had the place to ourselves right after opening. They have the full menu of coffee options Manhattanites would expect. We just ordered what was available on drip, they had two options. I tried an excellent medium roast ("Canoe"), my soulmate went for the light roast ("River Trip"), and both were outstanding; it looks like they rotate their coffee selections regularly, which makes it worth returning just to see what's new. The space was exactly what you'd expect from a proper coffeehouse. It had comfortable indoor and outdoor seating, music in the background, and plenty of tables with outlets for people camping out with laptops. Service was friendly and prompt, and the whole thing was priced just right. I wouldn't go far out of my way for it if on a schedule, but if you're nearby, it's an easy choice. And my favorite: I absolutely love diner-style mugs and they serve drip coffee in them!

    Oat milk pistachio mocha

Yummy coffee. Ordered a pistachio mocha drink. Space is more of a grab and go, but they have some seating. Parking is street parking. Service was really friendly and when we bought coffee bags, we got a free coffee!

Water Avenue Coffee prepares the best Latte bar none. Today, I asked for the barista to prepare the Latter with Oat Milk. The Latte prepared with Oat Milk was just as excellent as their dairy milk version. Wow! Service was fast, friendly and efficient.

    Zucchini bread - so good!

Street parking was quick and easy to find on a Saturday morning. Extremely friendly and kind staff. Aaron made my latte with a smile and created beautiful latte artwork! Zucchini bread - was super delicious and didn't taste overly sugary like other places I've had it. Honey lavender latte - easy to drink and a nice subtle flavor. Glad this was not too sweet. Lots of standing area with tables and tall seats. Water refill station is self serve. Will definitely be returning!

seasonal drink: s'mores mocha (comes with graham cracker!)
    Michelle W.

Stopped by for an afternoon coffee and wasn't disappointed! We got the latte and a seasonal drink which was the s'mores mocha. The mocha had a huge toasted marshmallow and graham cracker accompanying it, it made for a fun drink. My only gripe is that I wish the coffee/espresso flavor was a bit stronger. But other than that, the staff were friendly, the ambience was inviting, and parking was easy!

    The best coffee around

Well, this is an easy review to write because I have been drinking water Avenue coffee for years after finding it randomly a few years ago while doing some work in downtown Portland... this is the best coffee shop you can find in Portland and the Pacific Northwest. Something about the way that they brew these beans just makes it special.

    Big windows!

10/10 This is a great coffee spot for studying and working. Incredible service from Aaron behind the counter. Also great music taste for study and work. The staff were attentive and jovial with each other. The atmosphere is aesthetic and clean and cozy, but not overly cozy--a very modern industrial style that I find conducive to work or deep thinking. Plenty of south-facing windows means a flood of light which I actually had to retreat from, but this is overall a great thing!! I can imagine during the 4 months of deep winter this is a huge boon, and lovely at all other times of year. The location is hugely helpful as it's on the waterfront with easy access to any part of the city within a short drive. This is a great option I'll be revisiting.

This reminds me of the Korean cafes that are sprinkled all over Southern California. We were delighted to see it here! I ordered a black sesame late and a black sesame mochi donut. Being only one barista, right after you order, he makes your drink immediately. You can hear and see the espresso shots being made and the ice filling your cups. Dependent on your order, he pulls out the cream for the top. I can see the black sesame cream top being very thick and full. A lot of patrons were ordering their tiramisu latte, and I don't blame them! It's what is very popular here. Personally, I enjoyed the black sesame latte very much. It was the perfect amount of cream and sweetness. The taste didn't overpower the coffee, which is nice. Their mochi donuts were good, too, with the consistency of mochi dough. Definitely would make another stop here if I'm ever around!

They are located outdoors within a repurposed trimet station, which add such a a unique Portland touch to their vibe. Although usually a 1-2 person operation, drinks always come out relatively quick! I tried the tiramisu latte and the black sesame latte. The tiramisu latte was easily my favorite. The cream top is rich and delicious, and when mixed into the coffee it really tastes like a classic tiramisu dessert. It's sweet, smooth, and feels like a treat without being overwhelming. The black sesame latte was also great, especially if you like nutty flavors. It has a natural sweetness with a deep roasted sesame taste that almost reminds me of peanut butter, making it both comforting and unique. I've also had their regular latte before and really appreciate the quality of their espresso. The coffee itself has a smooth, balanced flavor that stands out even without added syrups or toppings. A great spot to visit if you enjoy creative specialty drinks but still want genuinely good coffee underneath it all.

His hospitality set the tone for the whole evening--warm, relaxed, and full of conversation between people from all over the world. One of the highlights was watching Joe prepare traditional Egyptian coffee over hot sand, a centuries-old method that slowly heats the coffee and brings out deep, rich flavors. But the real comfort of the night came in the form of Egyptian Sahlab. Imagine a thick, creamy winter drink made from warm milk, gently sweetened and flavored with vanilla and orange blossom water. Those of you who tried it know what I am talking about! It was very nice to get a beautiful taste of Egyptian culture right here on Hawthorne. Huge thanks to Joe for the incredible hospitality and for sharing these traditions with us. I hope they expand to include a full Egyptian, Mediterranean food menu.
