I may be a bit sentimental about the Magpie because it was my grandmother's favorite restaurant. Every visit brings back wonderful memories, which makes dining here even more special. The staff is always friendly, welcoming, and attentive, helping to make every meal a great experience. One piece of advice: try to make a reservation if you can, as it's a very popular spot and can get quite busy, especially during peak times. It's well worth planning ahead. For us, the Magpie is more than just a restaurant--it's a Whitby tradition. Great food, wonderful staff, and years of happy memories keep us coming back every time we visit.

The ambiance was awesome, the service was excellent and super friendly. The food came out perfect and in the right time and in the right order. The quality and the taste of each dish was truly impressive - literally, perfect! I also personally like this kind of places - higher-end, great food, well trained and friendly service, but not uptight. We enjoyed a delicious meal and truly sophisticated dishes while feeling relaxed and having fun. All I can say is "thank you for the unforgettable experience"!!!

And I did moan. The luciously rich duck danced a fruity sexual tango with the cherry and Marsala sauce on my tongue. And I did groan. The perfectly ripe raspberries dissolved into a piquant jam atop the quivering chocolate cheescake and smeared my palate with pupil engorging delight. And I did very nearly re-enact that scene from When Harry Met Sally. Your table is yours for the evening, which means you don't feel at all rushed. The restaurant has a relaxed and opulent feel to it, with all tables having ample space between them. There is a well-stocked bar and an impressive range of wine on offer too. The menu is seasonal and is a set price for two or three courses (£25 and £30 respectively). No extras, your vegetables and sides are all included. The menu is not vast but has a good range of dishes to suit all palettes. Complimentary fresh bread with salted butter and home-made houmous was a nice start to the meal. We opted for the main/dessert option, so which one of the tempting main courses do you go for? The choices were beef, belly pork, pan-fried gnocchi, a shallot tartin and the two we eventually plumped for the fish of the day and the chicken thigh in a truffle cream sauce. Both dishes were outstanding, so full of flavour, the Coley was beautifully cooked, with a crisp skin on a fricassee of peas, broad beans and prawns, with pea mayonnaise and fabulously crispy chips; every mouthful was an absolute marvel! My wife had the equally impressive, chicken thigh with a crispy skin, dauphinoise potatoes, salted celeriac and strips of apple in a rich creamy truffle sauce. All accompanied with side orders of new potatoes, carrots, swede, as well as broccoli and mange tout with toasted pine nuts. The best two main courses we have had for a long time! The local Black Sheep Ale was a perfect accompaniment to the dish too, earthy and sweet. The desserts were a choice of four, but one stood out over all the others, a dark chocolate parfait, dusted with honeycomb and a nut praline, accompanied by a refreshingly strong passion fruit ice cream on a crushed biscuit base. Too often, after a stunning main course, desserts fade quickly from the memory. However, this was as impressive as the mains; all the flavours complimented each other perfectly, to give a wonderful end to a fantastic meal. Would we come again? In a heartbeat! Outstanding food in classy surroundings, great service and the sultry sounds of Lana Del Rey punctuating the air, it doesn't get much better.

The menu didn't have a huge variety but I find that usually a good thing as gives more concentration and focus on dishes. I had enjoyed some mussels the other night so had them as a main here and my partner ordered a chicken wrapped in ham. To supplement this a house salad was ordered. The food did take a while to arrive but I thoroughly enjoyed mine but glancing at partner's it did look uninspiring and dry. Jealously we glanced at a lady who had ordered and epic looking pasta dish which she exclKmed was the best thing she had eaten in a long time lol I really think it is sometimes pot luck aka on what you order.     Having had our previous restaurant booking cancelled due to 'technical difficulties' at short…read morenotice, we knew we had limited time to find a restaurant on a sun-kissed, hugely busy bank holiday in Whitby. Thankfully we happened on Cosa Nostra, a large multilevelled Italian restaurant on Church Street and they had a table free! Shown to the upper levels of the restaurant, it was a good place to relax away from the hustle and bustle on a busy May evening. The menu had a decent variety of traditional and more unusual dishes from pizza to pasta, fish dishes to calzone. Not feeling at our most ravenous, we opted for two standard dishes, linguini carbonara and linguini ragu, washed down with a pint of draught Peroni, accompanied by some garlic bread. When the dishes arrived, wow, the portions are enormous at this place! Two large bowls of pasta and a generous pizza sized portion of thin crust garlic bread. The carbonara was spot on, the creaminess of the sauce contrasted perfectly with the saltiness of the bacon, the garlic bread heavy on the garlic, as it should be and the ragu full of earthy tomato flavours. Gamely though we tried, we couldn't finish any of the components, as we both were just recovering from a cold. The head waiter was so concerned with our lack of progress, he offered to pack us up a doggy bag! Reassuring him the food was spot on, we vowed to return when our appetites renewed.
