I first began attending St. Luke after reading an article in the "Atlantic" about a sleepy Minneapolis suburban church whose elderly members were handing out gay pride flags in support of the gay community. Sidenote: Yes, this happened, and here's the proof: http://bit.ly/MhHCJT When I first walked into St. Luke for a Sunday morning service, I was greeted by a person wearing a nametag, who handed me a program, shook my hand, and welcomed me in such a friendly, sincere manner. The rest of the church members were the same. Many had nametags, all were welcoming without being pushy. This is definitely not a church where the congregation treats you like you are a goal to be won. You are a human, and at St. Luke, you'll be treated as such. St. Luke is genuinely a place where everyone can discover something. The folks who attend - along with the pastor and the rest of the church's staff - honestly care about their community. This is not a fire and brimstone church. This is not a judgmental church. This is a church where you can come and be yourself, and learn how to become an even better version of yourself. This is a church focusing on social justice and trying to simply make the world a better place. Also, I have to say that I'd add a special sixth star for the choir - these folks have such great voices and so much joy. There's also a special "Folk Choir" that sings songs with a folky flair - when I see that the Folk Choir is going to be singing, my little heart automatically swells with happiness. Come to St. Luke - regardless of whether you're looking for something, or just wanting to learn more, I promise you will find it here.

There's Arlene, 70-something, who does 50 push-ups a day and then goes to fight for housing for the homeless. There's Carrie, a big-time volunteer who lost her husband unexpectedly and asks for our prayers. There's Martha who planted a perma-culture garden on her street after being inspired by St. Luke's environmentalism. There's Lori, The Director of Faith Formation, who's teaching my children Bible stories and a progressive interpretation of them. (Turns out, everything's interpreted.) There's a whole group of people who help Native Americans grow their own fruits and vegetables. We have Cody and Joy, teenagers, speaking out against climate change. There's Carol, there's Jean, there's Mark, and on and on. This is a community of people with what they call "well-developed character." Spiritually, you are welcome here. You can be burnt out and crusted over and I guarantee that you will find a way to a greater good at St. Luke. David Brooks opines that there are two ways to spirituality: connect to a higher good, then serve; and serve, then connect. St. Luke makes room for both. We start with "love one another" and work from there. While not always perfect and polished, St. Luke is quite deep on sustenance and powerful service. And the people--they are *fantastic.*

The services are very interesting (if not entertaining at times) and the sermons always pertain to day-to-day life. (Unlike the fire and brimstone services I grew up with as a child!) I also really like the culture of the church and especially like the four pastors on staff. My husband and I also appreciate the children's sermons, choir/music and the wide range in age of church goers. As for the church building itself, it is very large and I LOVE the stain glass windows. In the Spring, Summer and Fall, there are lots of plantings of flowers around the exterior of the church. I personally love the brick exterior of the church. I would actually say that St. Philip has nice "curb appeal!" St. Philip's also has their hand in a lot of community activities, volunteering, food donations, etc. I personally have never seen a church this involved in community giving. I highly recommend this church for anyone looking for a new church home.

My husband and I have been visiting Catholic churches in the west metro with aim of finding one to…read morejoin. We attended the Sunday 10:30 AM mass and enjoyed it very much. The church is large, clean and bright. The architecture is in a modern style. The priest was very energetic and charismatic. Mass was performed in English and the priest faced the congregation. There was no strong smell of incense. The sermon was meaningful and really resonated with me. A member of the congregation recognized that we were new and invited us to stay for donuts and coffee after mass (which is a regular event). I really enjoyed the lively music but my husband did not like that there was clapping as part of one of the songs. We learned that the Sunday evening mass has modern music.
