Derek first started working with us as the architect for a major deck renovation--replacing our back deck, adding a covered roof, a new front deck, and an upper deck off the main bedroom. It was a big project, and while the original deck company started to collapse mid-way through (unfairly pointing fingers at Derek), he stayed the course. Derek continued to communicate clearly, step in where needed, and ultimately saw the entire job through to completion--even installing a stunning tongue-and-groove ceiling on the back deck himself. Derek replaced a portion of the subfloor in our living room to take care of a 15 year old creaking noise and set us up for beautiful new carpet in the same area. He assisted in the design and build of a loft in our pole barn for additional storage place. He was great to work with, competitively priced and a true craftsman. I started We Build Decks after years in the construction industry, where I saw a real need for quality craftsmanship and honest service in deck building. Too often, homeowners were left with rushed jobs, poor materials, and zero follow-up. I knew I could do better. With over 15 years of hands-on experience and a deep respect for the trade, I launched this family-owned business in 2022. My goal is simple: build strong, beautiful decks that stand the test of time and treat every customer with integrity. Denver Decks just completed the work on our new deck. From the very start to the finish the…read moreproject has been great. The new deck replaced an old wooden deck that had seen it's better days. The understructure of the old deck was beginning to fail and the understructure supports the roof that covers most of the deck. Before hiring Denver Decks to do the job we used AI to recommend good deck companies in the Denver area. We contacted four companies, three responded and Denver Decks was one of those three. Our deck is 17' x 20' and the estimates to do the job were similar. We were promptly contacted and set up a meeting with Paul Koehn from Denver Decks. We met with Paul and quickly realized that he was much more that just a salesman for the company. He had built many decks before moving into sales so his knowledge of what is needed for a new deck was extensive, readily available, and we actually enjoyed discussing our project with him. Paul also indicated that Denver Decks always complies with the codes and permit process that exists for such projects in Denver. One of the companies that we contacted said that they do not pull permits for work in Denver and if something goes wrong during the process it would be our fault! Paul had lots of photos of other projects that Denver Decks had completed. The photo collection was extensive, well organized, and included pictures of stairs, railings, deck surfaces and lights that have been used in other projects. It really made it easier for us to decide what we wanted for our deck. After deciding on what we wanted for our deck the deconstruction of the old deck began and we got to meet/talk with Jay (project manager), Mike (site manager) and Jim, the craftsman for our deck. The communication throughout the project was great! The roof, that covered most of the 17'x20' deck, was supported by three 4"x4" posts that were set upon the deck surface that was supported by two 2"x8" boards on edge. I was very nervous that the aging understructure might fail and drop the roof onto the deck. Denver Decks installed 3 caissons to support the new 6"x6" posts that would now support the roof and 3 added caissons to support the outer edge of the deck. Each cement caisson was 19" in diameter and 36" deep. My worries about the roof falling ceased to exist! After the old deck was removed Jim began to build the new deck. I do not have words that can adequately express how impressed we were with the craftsmanship, construction knowledge and care that Jim displayed in building our deck. The skill that he displayed in all aspects of the construction were amazing and the best that I've ever witnessed in all of the projects that I've ever hired or been around. He built our deck the way that I would've built it if I had his knowledge, skill, equipment and his many years of construction experience! Thank you Jim! Such decks are not cheap and the price for Denver Decks to do the job was similar to that of the company that said they would not pull permits! Building a deck is one of those many situations in life where you truly do, "get what you paid for" and we didn't pay a cent until the job was finished to our satisfaction. Apologies for such a long review but a short review just would not do in this case. Denver Decks did a great job for us and we wholeheartedly recommend them for your deck. They can add us to their lengthy list of references who will be glad to discuss Denver Decks with you for your project! Thank you Denver Decks for a job well done!

I called to talk to them about this and to point out that there weren't many weeds that were grown but a lot of fledgling weeds which was the whole reason we needed the help (we handpick / dig up more mature weeds all the time). We reached an agreement we were comfortable with and then when they sent us an upgraded bid, they still had a crazy high amount baked into the bid for handpicking weeds. I called to ask if they could get an eyes on the property before we approved that high amount (as I was comfortable with them spraying instead of handpicking) and they said they didn't have time to send anyone out and that the height of the weed will determine whether they spray or handpick, then they told me we could handpick the weeds that were taller ourselves if we wanted to, which was pretty upsetting. I felt very nickle and dimed by these folks given that our yard is not very big and the cost including the handpicking was the highest bid we received by far. We wanted to work with them but they were so concerned about a team of landscapers having to pick maybe 5-6 weeds, they set a very high price. I even sent them a picture of the yard and they even agreed there arent many weeds but still insisted on the high handpicking charge. Very disappointed.
