I spent (4) days here at a small private RV Park and we couldn't of had a better experience. I always immerse myself in any place I travel so I can take in everything local whether it's the food, the music and all the surrounding things to see and do. Like any small town across America this town has gone through a lot of transition over the years, but much of the town still has plenty of historic features that shows how life was decades ago. Before the crayfish industry exploded rice farming was a huge part of the economy as well as the booming oil field support industries. Although today it doesn't appear to be the transportation hub it once was the Vermilion River runs through downtown, and several canals and coulees run through other parts of Abbeville and is the end of the Louisiana & Delta Railroad's Abbeville Branch, there has been no railroad activity here since April 2020. Prior to 1989, back when this was the Southern Pacific railroad's Midland Branch, the track continued to Kaplan to serve at least one rice mill there, and, prior to about 1978, the track went all the way to Eunice. In 1911, a group led by Frank A. Godchaux Sr. formed the Louisiana State Rice Milling Company in Abbeville, Louisiana, by purchasing 30 rice mills in Southwest Louisiana. This company, later becoming Riviana Foods which was a significant player in the history of rice milling in Louisiana this is definitely a landmark one that many residents of Abbeville would like to see remain intact. I absolutely loved spending time in the area and was able to interact with a few of the lifelong residents here and once you leave the city limits the history of Louisiana continues in every direction. This town is more of a destination for area residents and the surrounding communities - I hope to return here again in the future to explore more of its culture and history...
