We visited 4 destinations and were hoping for Christmas Markets in all of them (Hamburg, Bruges, Rotterdam and Paris). Hamburg was by far the best. Doesn't look much when the cruise shuttle pulls up just opposite but the stalls are full of festive goodies and nice quality souvenirs, lots of hot chocolate, German mulled wine and hot dogs. All very reasonably priced for a festive attraction. The town hall was open too and was beautifully decorated and a great escape from the bitter cold for a short while. A lovely few hours spent here. Very much enjoyed. A great start to the Christmas holidays. Thanks Hamburg. read more

The Christmas market, or Weihnachtsmarkt at the Rathaus in Hamburg is extremely impressive. Not because of the copious quantities of gluhwein you can drink, or bratwurst to munch on... although they are great. No - this is the only christmas market I've seen so far to have an actual flying santa complete with reindeer and sleigh. Incredible...! Also - see my photos of the best ham sandwich you will ever eat in your life. I'm going back there for lunch every day. read more

This one is THE destination for Christmas market fans. As such, it gets crazy crowded! Of course it's pretties in the evenings when it's dark out and the pretty lights make everything so Christmassy, but you might be better off visiting during the daytime as it will be less crowded. The market is huge and beautiful and has everything you'll ever dream a Christmas market should have! Everything is decorated following a theme, the stalls are set up in a block-style pattern and you can find a large variety of foods, drinks, entertainment, crafts, art, clothes, accessories, everything! The closer to Christmas you get, the more crowded this place gets. Sometimes you can barely move in the crowds. But it's still such a fantastic market, definitely not to be missed! read more

My second year visiting the Hamburg Christmas market and I love it all over again. No-one does Christmas quite like a German Christmas market. The stalls, the wooden gifts, the woollens and the FOOD and DRINK! The quality of the food and drink offerings is really good - especially when you consider this is just a temporary stageing. MissRachelle has demonstrated the sausages better than I ever could, but you can also get cheeses, huge overflowing sandwiches, pickles, sauerkraut and of course beer and gluhwein. Dont miss the miniature train than runs above your heads in the centre and wait for Santa's ride across the the whole market. The market in Munich may be bigger, but my loyalty is with Hamburg. read more

It's hard to imagine how you could attend a place more massively Christmassy than perhaps Bethlehem or Lapland, than the Historic Christmas Market in Hamburg's main town square. Row upon row of food stalls, and places to buy gifts, plus Gluhwein, Eierpunch and Hot chocolate stalls. Massively over the top, however really good all the same. read more

What more could you want in a Christmas market? This place was magical! First, it's right in front of the town hall, with its ornate architecture and decoration. Next, its covered in lights to drive away the gloomy gray of December. They've got food and beverage stands at the best locations for people watching and for grabbing a beverage as you wander. I liked that the stalls were organized by what they were selling, making it easier to see all the toy stalls, all the jewelry stalls, all the Chinese stalls, etc, in one spot. Though I didn't ride it, a highlight was definitely the carousel with all the different transportation methods. We were there on the 2nd Friday afternoon in December, and it was crowded but you could still move and get to the stalls to get what you needed. read more

Even though the christmas market at city hall is pretty crowded compared to some other (close by ones), I really enjoy this one. The scenery is beautiful with the city hall in the back, all the lights, and the huge christmas tree. The prices here are also the same as elsewhere with mulled wine costing 2,50. My favorite though is santa with his sleigh that flies above your head for a couple of minutes and just watching the little kids and drunks screaming is priceless! read more

And this festival occurs every year around June. What can you expect? Planten und Blomen is transformed from a tranquil park space into a park full of music and activity. Expect international dances, childrens songs, instruments for all children to experiment with, storytelling, face painting, and much much more. There is always a programme (see above to the pdf link for that). And then on the side lots of stuff for your kids to experiment with. Not just traditional instruments are there, expect strange looking home made instruments made out of drain pipes, pots and pans, and anything else that makes a great sound. It's incredibly hard to describe how it really is. If you have kids then just head over there and have a fantastic afternoon. I have been there the past few years and never been disappointed with the offering there. Conclusion: A yearly festival that you just have to visit if you have kids. And even if you don't, then just act like a big kid! And the added bonus it doesn't cost a thing.

It's been hard for my wife and I to keep up! The Hamburger Dom Sommerdom capped off our summer festing all proper like. The area they allot for the Dom is massive and has a lot of "B's": beer gardens, beer bars, bratwurst, and booze as carnival prizes (YES, you read that right!). There are also a ton of standard carnival rides and rollercoasters; they even have funhouses like the ones in the Grease movie (which I've never seen anywhere else). Beide bier und bratwurst were consumed aplenty during our visit to the Hamburger Dom. We also went on a Friday night and were lucky enough to hop on the ferris wheel just as the weekly fireworks display began! Perfect timing! We had only recently heard about Hamburger Dom, but apparently it happens three times a year and runs for about a month each time during the spring, summer, and winter. Without a doubt, my wife and I will be regulars from here on out. And we'll be recommending people from home (SF, CA) to visit when it's around.

In diesem Jahr war ich schon 2 mal auf diesem traditionellen Weihnachtsmarkt. Es ist sehr weihnachtlich gestaltet und das Rathaus im Hintergrund gibt einen zusätlichen Zauber dazu. Der Weihnachtsmarkt am Jungfernstieg ist für meinen Geschmack etwas zu modern. Auch wenn es am Jungfernstieg weniger Menschen gibt und man auch ohne große Schwierigkeiten einen Tisch zum Glühwein trinken oder Champignons essen bekommt, so will ich diesen Zauber haben, welcher mich für einen Augenblick aus dem Alltag und der modernen Zeit entführt. Wem es allerdings wichtiger ist sich nicht wie in einer Sardinendose zu fühlen und man nicht die Zeit und die Geduld mitbringt mit der Masse langsam vor sich hinzugehen und sich alles anzuschauen, gegebenenfalls auf einen Tisch zu warten, sollte vielleicht lieber auf den Weihnachtsmarkt schräg gegenüber (hinter der Kriche) gehen. Dort ist es viel entspannter und die Stände sind ebenfalls schön anzuschauen. read more

Sausages that defy normal sausage length (yes that is me in the picture), the warmest of Glühwein, and more Christmas decorations than I have ever imagined existed... yes, this is how they do markets in Germany! I loved the Christmas stalls, making everything from hand crafted jigsaws to glass angel decorations, however I would recommend hunting around as some of the stock overlaps but the prices vary greatly. Make sure you're around to watch poor Santa get hoisted into the sleigh and run to the tower and back high above your head, appropriate music accompanying his ride. Make sure you keep your souvenir mug (if you're really not into that then trade it back for a 2 euro return) and swap it out for a clean one. After my visit here I can safely say I know what a German Christmas Market should look like, and now I will be resolved to feeling a tad sad when I visit the English versions! read more

Charakterystyczny zimowy obrazek Niemiec to jarmarki świąteczne zwane Weihnachtsmarkt. Odwiedziłam prawie wszystkie w Berlinie, a teraz po raz pierwszy miałam okazję zobaczyć jak to wygląda w Hamburgu. Na główny plac można dojść przechodząc przez mniejsze Weihnachtsmarkty, wprowadzają nas one w magiczny nastrój, który potęguję się na placu przez ratuszu. Wąskie uliczki, małe drewniane domki gdzie można napić się grzanego wina, zjeść bratwursta, steka lub po prostu kanapkę ze smalcem. Do tego małe stragany pełne ozdób, biżuterii, słodyczy. Na śrosku ogromna choinka, szkoda tylko, że metalowa ;-) W takich miejscach jest jeden minus czyli tłumy ludzie przepychających się w ciasnych uliczkach. Warto poczuć ten klimat i później pójść w jakieś spokojniejsze miejsce ;-) read more

c'est mon premier vrai marché de Noël car j'ai toujours trouvé que ceux de Paris ou des centres commerciaux sonnent faux : que des commerces de bouiboui, pas assez froid pour avoir l'ambiance des vrais marchés de Noël Je travaille à Hambourg et tous les ans j'attends avec impatience le mois de décembre pour aller au Marché de Noël sur la place de la mairie : une ambiance dingue avec plein de monde qui vient discuter, boire un vin chaud, manger des saucisses ou de la charcuterie et quand la nuit tombe le Père Noël arrive, monte sur son traineau et va sonner la cloche du marché (véridique) c'est le lieu de rendez-vous de tous les habitants de Hambourg pendant plus d'un mois y compris célébrités et journalistes read more

Ok, ecco cosa voglio per Natale: voglio delle casette di legno dove ragazze dalle guance rosa mi servono (parecchie) tazze di vin brulé, mentre aspetto che la slitta di Babbo Natale scivoli lungo un cavo sopra le nostre teste. Il barbuto scivola ogni giorno intorno alle 4, quindi c'è tempo per un'altra tazza, un bratwurst e un giretto, già brilla, tra i dolciumi e gli alberelli. Bisogna essere veramente brutti dentro per non entusiasmarsi come ragazzini in gita scolastica. Vietato l'ingresso a qualsiasi forma di Grinch o di Scrooge. read more

What a fantastic christmas market. Amazing food, flowing gluhwein and loads of cool little shops. If you are looking for a nice davey crocket hat, you'll probably find one here ;) You can't come to this Christmas market without having a bratwurst, trying some sugared cashew nuts and drinking Gluhwein with Amaretto. I've probably eaten at the Rathaus market at least 7 times and it's been open less than 10 days. It's time to loosen the belt a couple of notches. I can see my waistline expanding nicely in December! read more

German Christmas markets are renowned for capturing the spirit of Christmas and this market doesn't disappoint. Trundle down the narrow alleys between the little impromptu village of wooden huts sipping a mug of steaming gluhwein (mulled wine) and thrift through barrels of dangly, shiney things, wooden toys, caramelised nuts and sausage stands. There's also (a rather scary) santa on a sleigh that they shoot across a zipline with his booming voice ho-ho-hoing for the kids. Pretty cool way to spend a lunch time. read more

Wir sind aus dem Norden extra nach HH zum Weihnachtsmarkt gekommen. Die Ladenstr. ist sehr nett geschmückt und bringt Jedermann in Weihnachtsstimmung. Läuft man dann auf den Rathausmarkt, verfällt man wieder in Stress. Es ist eine große Anzahl an Betreibern vorhanden und genau das ist das Problem zu enge Gassen. Man wird geschoben und bedrängt und hat keine Chance zu schlendern. Fazit: Wer auf Konzertfeeling steht und sich schieben lässt, ist hier genau richtig. read more
