    2015 Christmas Gendarmenmarkt
    Anj L.

What a fun Christmas market! It was recommended by some locals because not only is it nice but also charges 1 Euro, which keeps the begging gypsies out. Good idea! Located in the heart of Mitte, this market was large and packed with people. Happy, drunk people! Beer and mulled wine stands were all over the market. Mmmm, mulled wine...good stuff. The cute little "stores" under tents were plentiful. And quite expensive. This didn't stop people from buying, the the whole place was elbow to elbow, which is why I didn't give 5 stars. I felt a little claustrophobic. I still recommend this nice market that was festive full of local fare.

This was rated as one of the top Christmas Markets in Berlin, and was across the street from our hotel (Hilton Berlin). We popped in the night we arrived just before the market was officially closed. Most of the vendors had already closed down for the day, but there was one open still serving drinks. We were greeted with a very warm welcome, and a glass of champagne! Apparently that's what the vendor felt I needed at that hour of the night. On our second visit to WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt we paid a euro like everyone else. We found traditional craft vendors, tons of brats, live entertainment and more! There were even a few sections where they had set up temporary walls to host more expensive vendors and even two restaurants! The heated area of vendors had very high quality (and higher priced) merchandise. We sampled the gluhwein and noshed on traditional German treats. I will say that the market is very pretty at night, so if you get the chance at least pass by at night.

So, you are in Berlin for Christmas and wondering which Weihnachtsmarkt to visit? If you have the time, you will probably stumble upon most of them while making your way through the city. However, if time isn't your friend, then WeihnachtsZauber Gendarmenmarkt is where you would like to go first. Well decorated, plenty of shop, crowded, music, glühwein galore, wurst galore, marzipan, all things Christmas - it is here. It was even snowing when I visited, so this added up to the Christmas magic. If you feel like warming up a bit and glühwein isn't helping, there's a covered area with neat shops inside. They offer variety of stuff - from Christmas related to some totally random (at least for me). From the traditional for every Christmas market Weihnachtspyramide shop, through a handmade handbags shop and even a place to have a snack at. There is a stage at the market, with some events going on at certain times, so you may want to check the schedule for anything that might be of interest to you. And just mentioning this as a fact - there's 1 euro admission fee. I went to Berlin especially to feel its Christmas magic and the Christmas market at Gendarmenmarkt did not disappoint at all.

Flying half way around the world to experience Christmas Markets in Germany was one of the best decisions of my life. I chose Berlin since I heard there was 50, but I only had 30 hours and visiting two was more than enough. I started with the largest Weihnachtszauber (Christmas Magic) Gendarmenmarkt (open Nov 26-Dec31s) packed more than Disneyland and I spent 6 hours walking at a foot shuffle pace taking photos and sampling nearly every Christmas food offered. But this isn't just a tourist activity, Christmas Markets are a hangout for locals at night gathering around drinking Christmas drinks and eating the most delicious foods. I was surprised how incredible the food was, no idea why I had the assumption that I would not care for German food. The Sausage and pretzels are nothing I've tried or knew, they were amazing! My favorites were: *Lecker Hahmbrot, Sourdough, sour cream, bacon & green onions fresh out of a coal stove oven. *Thuringer Bratwurst. Most amazing tasting Sausage I've ever tried! *The pretzel, nothing like I've tried anywhere else in the world. It was bready and flavorful. *Raclette served on sourdough and bacon. *Langos Fried sweet dough with garlic oil, sour cream, and parsley. *Glühwein and Eierpunsch (eggnog cocktail) and served in the cutest souvenir mugs. I took home the cutest glass ball that lights up beautifully with a tea candle, gingerbread and four mugs. Only negative was one of the workers were grumpy and unpleasant. Thankfully only 20% or so. Tip: Get there close to when they open after 11am as it get super packed at sundown and unable to walk more than a shuffle pace.

Lit up you may say, yes lit up from top to bottom some with lighting that is so intricately detailed. It's a show second to none in one kick ass city, Berlin! We saw many of the famous monuments lit up from Brandenburg Gate to the TV Tower, but also enjoyed lit up architecture throughout the inner city too. I was very pleased we missed Oktoberfest and landed here during the Festival of Lights. One-of-a-kind show happening on one-of-a-kind structures that are as old as old can be.

But I do not provide 25 EUR or 30 EUR advance was to be paid at the checkout. So I got hold of me a cheap day ticket for 17 EUR. ;-) But what can I say? I was disappointed either have the people on the stands had no more desire or are just so boring by nature. Some dancers were a visual treat, as a woman I saw it that way. Some, however, was the boredom on her face unfortunately. Great new features, it also gave great at least I have not seen any. However, I must say it, I was on the last day there, that it was positive; I got hold of a powder compact (powder with glitter and taste) for just 5 EUR, The cost was 15 EUR. The funny thing was, many organizers were already gone from 15 clock .. Almost outrageous! Yet I've also seen some informative articles, garrantiert me the times in your store here to welcome in Berlin. Beautiful corsets fancy dresses and masks For special events once found something extraordinary. However, many exhibitors also said that it is in contrast to the last Venus has very diminished . A little disappointed but richer for the experience, then I went home. Everyone should decide for themselves what one takes from it and whether it is still worth to visit the Venus. Doch was soll ich sagen?

The crowds were well-behaved in the early afternoon, and the festival was clean and well-organized. There were tons of trash cans but not enough recycling bins, which was a problem because it took a bit of hunting around to find a place to deposit an empty bottle. There was ample seating, a few stages with reasonably entertaining musical acts, and ample available portapotties. I tried small samples of three beers (about .2L of each) and didn't end up finding any I liked, which is strange because I really enjoy beer. I also noticed that many of the beers here were brands that you could find anywhere in Berlin at any time, like Weihenstephaner, Köstritzer (which is delicious, but still), and so on. However there were a few more unusual options like Ghanaian beers brewed with mango or banana, Guinness bottled for the African market, and, available from a Scottish vendor, beer brewed with seaweed. So you can get a bit more adventurous if you like. I did not wish to drink very much but if you want to sample a lot of beers, you can buy the festival "Probierkrug" which is a .2L mug, and the folks at the beer stands will pour out small tasting portions into that mug. But what I was mostly looking for was something tasty to eat that I didn't have to prepare myself. I tried some Dutch poffertjes for the first time--they are like silver dollar pancakes, and they were served with powdered sugar and orange liqueur poured over top. I also had a venison bratwurst, which was quite good although not very distinct in flavor from its porcine counterpart. For my husband, I procured a ham sandwich (the ham was moist, delicately smoked, and not overly salty) and a burger (125g of well-done beef with ham, sundried tomatoes, red onions, dill pickles, and lettuce on a rye bun). He enjoyed both of the sandwiches very much. So oddly enough, I would sooner recommend this festival for the food options than for the liquid ones. The festival is definitely not worth making a special trip to Berlin for, but that being said I could think of far worse ways to spend an afternoon if you are here in the city and I do think it was well done.

There are so many different beers to choose from, it's difficult to know where to begin. You can buy a small glass at either end of the festival which you can use for the beer or you can just be served the glass which was made for that particular beer. You pay a deposit to do this though but get your money back when the glasses are returned. There are also lots of good stalls to eat and bands playing music. It was jam packed with locals and tourist and there was also a huge tent area with shops and plenty of food options from basic bbq to exotic foods from around the world and vegan / vegetarian etc. Besides this there are tons of Street cafes and stalls open selling food and drink around the area. The main parade was on the Sunday starting at around 1pm and groups from around the world and from different cultures putting up floats. It's slow and goes on for a good few hours. The music was fabulous and people were on the streets enjoying themselves as the floats went by. Be careful as the streets are filled with bottles and cans within a couple of hours and you can slip on them quite easily. The only thing I did not like about the event was all the bottles left behind all over the place. We had a lovely day hanging around in Kreuzberg and as the day went on it was getting more and more crowded. I would definitely come back here again with friends for a weekend. It is a noisy and colourful sight which is always very popular with young people who want to drink and dance , families and folk out to enjoy the lively atmosphere, you should be aware though, that because of the huge crowds, it is easy to get separated from friends and family, so keep hold of those kids! . It has groups representing many, or even most, of the diverse range of cultural groups in Berlin, one recent addition to this burgeoning group was Scotland in 2013 with its first appearance. This is not all however, the whole weekend from Friday evening through to Sunday evening they have stages playing live music representing different genres as well as food and souvenir stalls, this can all be found around Hallesches Tor and there are always African drummers playing and dancing in the small park next to the AGB Library. In addition to this many of the Inhabitants in the area take to the streets to enjoy the community events with neighbours. I'm giving the event 4 stars because, although I enjoyed it the first couple of times, I get to enjoy it every Year without choice so it no longer holds the same joy for me but I do really enjoy the time spent with neighbours!
