I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED!! We arrived about noon from Frankfurt. The kind lady checked us in. She spoke great English which was so nice. Our room was ready #9. She walked up all flights of stairs with us (no elevators). Our room was lovely!!! We were top floor overlooking back of building and even though it is the parking lot, it is beautiful view!! By the way, there is free private parking behind the building. We slept in and missed breakfast. We loved this place! I'd highly recommend!!!!

Great bed and breakfast in Cochem! We took the train from…read moreDusseldorf to Cochem to be able to enjoy a day of beautiful views and relaxation. We decided to pick Villa Vinum because it's location to the Altstadt (old town) and the Mosel River. We arrived early (at around 11 am) and the owner allowed us to check in early so that we could drop our stuff off and enjoy the city. The room was very large (for European rooms) with a large couch, very comfortable beds, and a separate room for the toilet/sink and then the shower separately (which is nice for getting ready in the morning.) In our room, we had a beautiful balcony of the city of Cochem. We were gone most of the day, but when we came back that night we were looking to enjoy some nice Riesling. The owner had a large wine fridge and he suggested a bottle and gave us wine glasses, so that we were able to enjoy a delicious bottle of wine in our comfy bed. The next morning, we were able to enjoy the "breakfast" part of the B&B. It was an elaborate buffet of deviled eggs, fruit, yogurt, juices, different breads and croissants. It was very delicious and much more extensive than I would have expected. We were able to check out the next day and the owner was again very friendly! The room rate was much cheaper than I would expect based on the level of service, the great breakfast and the room size/comfort. One other note is that while the owner speaks excellent English, the staff does not (which is okay since we were in Germany) but it's just something to be aware of if you do not speak German. I would highly recommend Villa Vinum for a great Bed and Breakfast experience.

If you arrive prior to check in they will hold your bags. At check in we were provided with the key and walked up 2 flight of stairs to our room. They did not have an elevator which was not a problem for us. Our room had two beds pushed together with fluffy pillows and a nice feather comforter. We had a balcony with 2 chairs and a small table. The bathroom was smartly decorated with all the necessary amenities, such as gel, shampoo and hair dryer. There was plenty of room to store luggage and closet space. Breakfast was outstanding. Each morning we were taken to our table which was very inviting. There was a basket with fresh rolls, cheese spread, and spreadable liverwurst. She had 2 stations which had an excellent selection of fresh coldcuts and wonderful smoked salmon. At the other station was a selection of fresh fruit, yougert, rolls, muffins and hard boiled eggs. This breakfast was plentiful but also very elegantly done. I look forward to staying here again.

We were starving and decided to stop in out of desperation, something which typically never leads to a good meal. But what a gem we found! Man, these guys are making some of the best wienerschnitzel I've ever had (and I've had quite a few in my day). They had this dish called wienerschnitzel "gypsy style", which absolutely rocked. You get a sizzling hot schnitz served with a truly eloquent hot pepper sauce, fried potatoes, dumplings, and salad. It was an amazing meal and the portions, in typical German style, were gigantic. Service was impeccable but it was a bit of a tough slog to communicate with their crew since they literally spoke zero English. No worries though, randomly pick something off the menu and enjoy!

Stayed here while visiting the Mosel River Valley…read more Exterior grounds: the building and surrounding outdoor areas are very clean and well kept. The front opens onto a cobble stoned street that leads to the train station in one direction and the village of Cochem in the other direction. The back opens into a private parking lot for the bed and breakfast. Unlike many parking areas, there's quite a bit of room to maneuver vehicles of various sizes. The hotel is perfectly situated to reach the river (across the street), downtown (just a few blocks), or the train station (a few blocks)...remember, these are village blocks, so they are much shorter. Interior: this is an old building on the exterior, but the interior has been remodeled over the years. The main hallways are large and lofty and well lit. Since it is such an old building, there is not an elevator, but the stairs are wide and easy to navigate. The breakfast room is open during breakfast hours (we worked those out with the staff). It is exceptionally clean and has plenty of seating. There is also a refrigerator on the second floor with various drinks (alcoholic and non) for purchase. Forms are next to it for you to keep track of what you purchase, which you turn in when you depart and settle your tab. Rooms: the rooms are spacious, super clean, and comfortable. The bathrooms have been remodeled and though somewhat small, are more than big enough. The rooms I've seen all have stand up showers without bathtubs. There are plenty of wall sockets to plug in your devices, so charging my stuff was not an issue. Each room has a wall-mounted television with a wide selection of channels, but who wants to watch TV when visiting the Mosel? One of our group, who had just returned from Paris, stated that these rooms were better than the 4 star Parisian hotel room they had stayed in. Breakfast: it was awesome! We had our choice of different breads, meats, cheeses, jams/jellys, fruits, coffee, and so on. We were always totally satisfied after eating breakfast. Wi-fi: the wi-fi is free, but only lasts for 30 minutes at a time. The connection was strong and steady, which was nice. Of course, you shouldn't be spending too much time on the web since you're in the Mosel valley. This is a great bed and breakfast in which to stay! The cost for the rooms are almost the lowest in Cochem, but you get far more than you expect for the price. The staff is great and helpful. The view from the terrace is simply amazing! During peak seasons (Spring through Fall) make sure you make reservations months in advance. I saw they had reservations already filling the place up for May 2015. Since we were there in December, it was easy to get rooms. However, don't let that deter you from trying, as people do cancel!

We stopped by at opening (18H) and asked if we could make a reservation for a bit later as we wanted to explore the city a bit more. The owner with limited English told us no reservations, just come back. We did just that an hour later and he was able to seat the two of us. The owner suggested a great Riesling. We struggled a bit with the menu in German since the options variety boards and not the typical entrees we had gotten used to so the owner sent out the cook to help us. We ordered a cheese variety plate and a plate with some meat varieties, cheese, and bread. Both included a few pickles and tomatoes. They were exactly the type of light fare we were looking for that night and what we expected at a wine bar. The restaurant was loaded with antique character and fit the image of what you would want a hidden gem winestub in an old city like Cochem to look and feel like. The same larger groups we saw waiting for the opening were still enjoying their meals and more wine which was easy to understand. We started with a glass each, but enjoyed it so much we got a bottle. Highly recommend Alte Gutsschanke!
