However this is simply the façade and as you walk through into the courtyard to the tavern, it appears Captain Kidd has a lot to offer. Named after Captain William Kidd, who was convicted of piracy and hanged in Wapping in the 1700, the pub walls hang framed illustrations and writings telling his grisly story. Paintings of ships, nautical diagrams and maps of the Thames crowd the remaining wall space whilst the low beamed ceiling is very traditional and barrels are used for tables. There's an olde worlde feel to the place and is quite easy to imagine what is must have been like a couple of centuries ago. Next to the Thames, this pub has the most fantastic window views and in the summer you can enjoy the lovely terraced area, where you can relax and watch boats sailing by. The beer is well priced (all pints are under £3) which is impressive feat in London and the bar staff are friendly too. It is mostly occupied by locals but it's worth a trip from further afield on a nice, sunny day. Ahoy there sailor!

I had been drinking Camden Hells Lager since I've been in the UK, so when we saw the Camden Town Brewery, we decided to stop and get a bit to eat. It is in a great spot, right on the Camden Locks, in the heart of the Camden Market. It isn't much to look at once you walk in, pretty standard. Same goes for the cocktail offering. The cocktails on their cocktail menu mostly contained Beefeater Gin, but they were out of Beefeater Gin and said they couldn't substitute for one of the other Gins they had in the wall, which was quite a few, so that was disappointing. We were a little worried there wasn't a kids menu but we got the Cotswold fried chicken, without hot sauce and it was incredible. My wife and I shared the fish and chips and it was very good as well. We were a little underwhelmed when we walked in but were very satisfied and pleased with the food. We would comeback for the ambiance but definitely would for the food.

The…read morebrewery grew out of the passion and hobby of two beer enthusiasts and they have struggled to keep up with demand ever since. They even have the distinction of being the oldest brewery in East London- having registered their company only days before local favourites London Fields and Beavertown Brewery- but, unlike their counterparts, they have wittingly retained a low profile. This might not be for long, however. It is evident that the owners are aware of the brewery's enormous potential, but they are cautious about how to approach their success in a sustainable way. Peter Hills, one of the two founders, gave us the (exceedingly) brief tour of the premises; it consisted of antiquated kit, the smallest mash tun you'll ever see in a commercial brewery and a makeshift office environment that is reminiscent of a student dorm. There's a lot of charm here, however, and the lingering sense that Hackney will implode if they don't throw their hat into the craft beer race soon. This is because their beer is good. With a small set-up, you can guarantee that every batch is put through the rigours of quality control that just don't exist with larger scale systems. Each member of staff emanates devotion and love for their product. Hackney shouted a third pint for everyone on the tour and I sampled their raspberry wheat- a crisp, creamy smooth beer with a lovely aroma: a perfect summer session beer that appealed to my palate. The mosaic was heralded as the staff favourite and also delivered with a mild hoppy taste and clean finish. Hackney beer can currently be found in some local East London establishments (including our local Wetherspoon's, but it is always out), but once the owners fully commit themselves to getting the word out, you'll undoubtedly be seeing their beers in pubs across London. In the meanwhile, if you get the chance- jump at the opportunity to tour the brewery and try their beers yourself. This might just be the best underground craft beer in East London- for now.

Bedales turned out to be a great overhead view to people watch while enjoying a snack with a glass of wine. I wish the tuna tartar would have come with a few chips or crackers but thats nitpicking. It was very good and fresh. I would absolutely visit again on another London vacation.
