While visiting Buckeye Lake, I learned that Weldon's Ice Cream Factory is the place to visit. It's an institution, and it has been around since 1930! I'm not a big ice cream person, but I do love sweets, especially a sweets shop with history. I ordered a banana split. Though, it was difficult to decide what to order! This place has a peaceful vibe, but the signage is a little chaotic -- it's like walking up to a Dr. Bronner's bottle. I had to stand there for a bit and read everything while the poor girl behind the counter waited for me to get my bearings. (Luckily I was the only one in the shop at the time.) There are different colored signs everywhere, listing daily specials, new items, and things you can buy that aren't ice cream, like bags of ice and local honey. The banana split was delicious: A perfectly ripe banana split between two scoops of ice cream -- I chose vanilla and chocolate. It's topped with whipped cream, crushed nuts, and a cherry on top. It's one of those desserts where you lose track of time when you eat it, or at least I did. All of my concentration went toward eating that magnificent ice cream concoction as quickly as possible. I decided to shovel it into my face on the big porch, which overlooks the Buckeye Lake canal. There is also seating indoors, too. The flavors are rotating, and there are always seasonal options. For the late Summer, there's always sweet corn, and whenever I'm lucky, there's coconut! This is a true Old-fashioned ice cream parlor. The décor is the same as it was when the owners grandfather owned it, back in the 40s. I totally loved the vibe and the décor. It was so neat to walk into a true old-fashioned ice cream shop with most of the original décor. The owner was super friendly and told us a little history about the shop. Their ice cream is made on the original ice cream machines used by the owner's grandfather. It is definitely not the new day and age soft serve. This is ice cream people! They had flavors that were fun but still familiar. I had the Salted Caramel Oreo Cheesecake milkshake. This milkshake was rich, tasty, and thick. I tried a sample of the ice cream before I ordered the shake, and the ice cream itself was amazing. The milkshake was about $5 but it comes in a nice size cup. You definitely get your money's worth. Having spent a beautiful summer Sunday at Buckeye Lake, we decided to drive a few extra miles to Millersport for some ice cream at Weldon's. My friend had been here on several occasions and wanted to introduce us to some "great" homemade ice cream. He was right! When we arrived about 6:00 p.m., there were several cars already there. Each customer we encountered on our way in, cheerfully greeted us (did it have something to do with the ice cream, I wondered?) Weldons is a big, old house with a front porch. You can enjoy your order while sitting on one of the many chairs on the porch, or on one of the small wooden booths inside. The stools at the counter are more for placing orders, and boy do you have many mouth watering choices. There is a chalkboard listing the different flavors of ice cream available at the time. They also have soda fountain drinks and sundaes. A scoop of ice cream is more like two scoops. I ordered lemon blueberry cheesecake ice cream which was really creamy smooth and delicious. The blueberries were frozen and tasted perfect on a perfect summer day. A scoop cost $2.95. What a deal, especially after paying almost twice that much for "speciality" ice cream in the big city. The employees were efficient and genuinely friendly. I noticed a great looking jukebox, but I'm not sure if it worked , because i didn't hear any music. That would have been a nice touch. View of the lake from the porch is nice too. The cones are fresh and I especially like the cone holders. No sticky little kid fingers later. Service was not friendly. The first thing they asked was how many in our party. We told them and asked how much a single scoop was and he said, "it's right there on the board". It was expensive and my daughter found a long hair in her ice cream. It was not a hair that fell asleep m but one that was embedded in the ice cream. We will NEVER come back. Everything is posted up on boards. Make sure you look at all of them - several have specialty makes and/or deals of the day. I went with a single scoop of delish Mouse Tracks which was pretty dagon big for "one scoop". $3.20. The young guy and gal working behind the counter weren't interested in the customer interaction thing. Felt like I was annoying them a bit asking for a sample. This established joint has been around for a good while. The shop is on the ground floor of an old house. Awesome front porch that spans the entire length of the house. The rocking chairs and bench seating are great for relaxing and people watching. Their own recipe ice cream is made right here, on-site. Nothing better than established hometown businesses that have been around through the years. A true staple in Millersport! read more

Swung by after the Millersport Sweet Corn Festival (a bit disappointing. If you're gonna call yourself a corn festival, try to have more than one booth with corn products.) Very nice old building that seems to still stay true to the day the ice cream parlor opened. It even has a jukebox that plays 45s. 10 cents for one song, 25 cents for 3. I had the "Dam Dam Sundae" which was basically just vanilla ice cream on top of a piece of chocolate cake covered with hot fudge sauce and whip cream. Of course, it described it a bit more creatively than that. i.e. The hot fudge sauce was "chocolate dredge sauce." And that's where the one problem with Weldon's is. It doesn't really tell you what a lot of the things are. What exactly is the Delicious Dilemma ice cream flavor? What is a Cousin Bob's Sundae? And you can't see the ice cream like you can at most ice cream places. So you have to end up standing there asking all these questions, holding up the line behind you. The ice cream was good, and I will definitely swing by again next time I find myself in the area. read more
