Do you love eclectic museums? If so, this is the perfect museum for a visit in Wellington.
Located in Queens Wharf, the Wellington Museum occupies the 1892 Bond Store, a historic building near the Wellington waterfront. The museum has four floors covering the history of Wellington.
Learn about the city's maritime history, early Māori and European settlements, and the growth of the region. Interesting to hear how the city has evolved over its 150 years as capital of New Zealand in the interactive theaters scattered throughout the museum.
My favorite space was The Attic.
The Attic is truly a hodge-podge of mismatched artifacts. A stuffed lion that was the actual lion, King Dick, that led to the founding of the Wellington Zoo in 1906. A Stained-Glass Rose Window from an Anglican Church. A petrified Eagle. Footage and flags from WWII. A oversized display of a sports commentator. And...a time machine. The weird, the wacky and the wonderful literally right under the attic roof. So fun to explore. To listen. And to be totally engaged. You never know what hidden treasure is on display.
The museum is open daily. Admission is free. They even have a place to refill your water bottles which is quite important on a warm summer day in Wellington. Definitely worth a quick, or not so quick, stop while exploring the capital city. read more
