What a letdown! I don't know if I should have expected more in the capital city of New Zealand, but this was small, and only a few animals exhibits and settings. The layout is easy, as one takes a circular path throughout and around the zoo. There is a cafe on site, and a few picnic tables with covering. If you've been to zoos elsewhere, you can give this a pass.
I loved this zoo. It's definitely on the smaller side, but almost all of the animals were visible and most seemed to have much more free space than a lot of zoos. There were some adorable animals; particular favorites include the sunbear lounging in his tree (he looked so relaxed, like he had no cares in the world), the giraffe that was right up against the fence eating leaves held out by people, and the baboons who actively engaged (albeit angrily) with those of us outside their enclosure. You might have needed to be there to appreciate the last one. The only disappointing thing when I went was the kiwis were mostly hiding in the dark, but the adorable one-legged rescue was visible. Overall, though, a great zoo that can be seen in a few hours!
This was my second favorite thing to do on my recent trip to Wellington! Before this day I might have said dolphins are my favorite mammals, but now...now I take it back. My absolute favorite mammal is a red panda. My friend booked a "close encounter," with a red panda, and it was THE coolest thing ever. The entire experience was just reflective of the cool, laid back vibe of NZ itself. The setting was picturesque, everyone was kind, the animals were dope (and OUT!), and the gift shop was cute. Sure, the could have more red panda gear, but I get it. High demand. The only thing this place was missing was a bar. My Kiwi friend laughed at me when I suggested it:) There's a fantastic bus shelter just off the main entrance, and you should stop for a fun photo op if you've got time. I love the commitment to making it beautiful and relevant on the inside AND outside. Favorite new thing to see? KUNE KUNE!!!! Y'all. There are hairy pigs out there that aren't razorbacks, warthogs, or wildabeasts. Big, fat, hairy pigs that It's adorable. There is a Banana Bar (where you and your little monkeys can get some treats), but LOTS of people pack lunch/snacks, so you can too. There's even an extra seating shelter to the right of the Banana Bat at the if you're walking towards the bathroom. It's covered, shades, and connected to a zoo video on a loop. It's great, you can take a break and just chill. All in all, a truly fun thing to do in Wellington. 10/10...even without my G&T read more
What an amazing experience! We booked the red panda experience, and on the day of, the weather was bad so they gave us the option to cancel, or to try any way. We tried anyway and we are so glad we did! We got to go into the red panda exhibit with a trainer. We not only got to feed, but also had the red pandas crawling all over us! We learned so much about them and got a ton of time with them in our laps! We also walked around the rest of the zoo. All of the animals were out where we could see them. All the enclosures looked clean and were good sizes. It seemed like a wonderful place and every staff member we came into contact with was so kind and helpful! read more
This is super cool zoo with alot of local animals. Must see the nocturnal house for the Kiwi's! Took the bus here from the middle of the city which dropped us off right at the entrance. The admission price for an adult is $23. There's animal talks throughout the day which is interesting. My favorite thing here is the Australian (neighbor) portion of the zoo with Tasmanian devils, and kangaroos, as well as the very famous nocturnal kiwi. There's 3 of them living in the nocturnal house, one is the famous rescue kiwi with 1 leg. They are all super cute. They stomp around their pens very loudly like little dinosaurs. Love them so much! The zoo is well maintained and very clean. Lots of kids programs. The monkeys are really funny too. We had a great time! read more

An outstanding zoo that is just the right scale to bring a family. First, do not think about huge zoos like the one in San Diego. Think of a zoo that can be seen in a few hours with plenty of space. Of course, there are great spaces for New Zealand and Australian species. You would expect that. What is really wonderful are the spaces for families. There are many areas to take a break, engage with some tame animals, examine educational stuff and so on. I could see lots of people with kids -- but also many teenagers -- walking around and having a good time. There are play areas galore. A word of warning. Like everything in Wellington, there are a lot of hills. Make sure that you have your strong legs on! The only bad note is that parking can be tricky to find -- on the other hand -- it is free!! Street parking is limited. There is some parking at a city park around the side. If you keep going past the running track there are usually spots for parking. Expect a bit of a walk. But, it is Wellington, you were expecting that anyway. read more
