There's also a vet who has specialist expertise in exotic animals, for anyone out there who owns snakes, lizards and the like. Most of the vets there seem to be quite young, and pretty friendly - although I've never seen the same vet twice! The service I've received has always been good and I've gone away feeling happy that I've received good advice - although my pockets are always a lot lighter, too. On top of the usual services most vets offer, such as vaccinations and consultations about specific health issues, Highcroft also has a free 24-hour advice line manned by a trained veterinary nurse, which is reassuring if you're worried about your pet outside of the usual office hours. I discovered one night that my hound had got her teeth into some chocolate, which can be poisonous in large quantities, so I rang up and the lady who I spoke to was great. They can help you decide whether to wait until the morning to see a vet, or opt for emergency (expensive!) treatment. Next to the reception area you can pick up pet care leaflets and browse the small shop area, which sells specialist pet foods and other pet care products such as dog shampoos, cat collars, leads, and so on - as well as those grim pigs' ears that my dog always heads straight for. Overall I would recommend this vet. Despite being more expensive than many others for consultations and some treatments, I do think the service is good and I do trust them to dish out good advice.

I have been using Treforest Vets for years for my two dogs and when the practice set up a new sister surgery in Tonapandy, it meant I saved a long journey but got just as good service. So do many others. The new surgery in Tonapandy has fantastic facilities with a good separation for dogs and cats. They have two separate fully equipped surgeries and three consultation rooms and this means often, where otherwise a pet might wait in a life and death situation, here they do not. Andrew is very caring and takes his time explaining everything. Mike has decades of experience and treats every client as if they were the only one. I see some reviewers say they had a good service from the vets but the receptionist was rude, or the room was warm... so they give one star? Hardly a reflection of what matters I think. If this practice was not in the two towns we'd be left with budget vets... I say support your local practices who have moved heaven and earth to build up two excellent locations for the benefit of our communities. How many others do you see investing in our valleys? Took my kitten in here most recently to have her neutered. It was a very busy practice so its obviously a popular choice. They gave us the price beforehand so we didn't need to worry about the costs and everything was over and done within a few hours. The staff were super nice and made me feel very relaxed about leaving her in their hands.

This Cardiff branch was actually the first veterinary clinic in Wales to specialise in care for exotic pets, although they also treat other companion animals, of course, including dogs, cats, rabbits and other small furries. Back in the 1990s, the clinic also opened the first 24-hour emergency veterinary service in the UK, V.E.T.S. Ltd, which is based at the same site and shares the clinic's equipment but is now a separate company, used by many veterinary surgeries in and around Cardiff who want to be able to offer their customers round-the-clock surgical and medical attention for their pets.

Imagine a red setter dog; who is old in his years, he isn't dying yet, but he has a nasty broken…read moreleg all bandaged up. He's a large dog that was largely loved. I must have been around eight years old if not younger than that at the time, when grandma and granddad visit us in Cardiff with their dog. Kelly was his name... he was gorgeous and used to play with him many times even when he was old. He hurt his ankle whilst they stayed with and so we took him down to Penylan's veterinary and the vet people were very good with him and they were very quick in trying to get him mended again. Grandma was in tears and those of us who went with the dog had to say good bye there and then because he was so poorly by then, being old an all... It is such a sad thing to be a part of: the time when you have to say good bye to an adorable pet who you have had many memories with, but at least we got time to do so... And then it wasn't and ending to a life that was too tragic; unlike for my brother's cat, but that is another story... Enjoy your time with them to the full whilst you still can for time and life are both very precious towards all life. I recommend this place to all animal lovers.
