I am a woman who loves magazines and Austin, so you'd think I'd naturally be in lust with Austin…read moreWoman magazine. To be honest, I'm on the fence about this local publication. First, the positives. I applaud Austin for supporting print media that highlights the successes of our hometown heroines, and I applaud founder Melinda Maine Garvey for breaking ground in a competitive market. Austin Woman began in 2002. In less than five years they've established a circulation of over 25,000 with distribution at over 600 Austin hot spots. Nice. My other positive? They generally select pretty cool women to highlight. I was delighted with their recent feature on Natalie Maines, and they've been discerning (in a good way) with their broad range of picks. Unfortunately, the articles are not wholly impressive. The quality of the composition is mediocre and the writing style is plain ole vanilla. I often spot grammatical errors and run-on sentences (this isn't one, is it?) I suppose this is nit-picky, but I like Austin Woman. I worry that these minor issues lower their credibility within the community and present less-than-stellar essays on some of our most notable and notorious. I grab an issue of Austin Woman each month. Hopefully I'll pick it up one day and be blown away by the copy.

I am so sad to write this review because I sincerely looked up to Austin Woman as a true icon in…read morethe community. However after becoming their customer I have since changed my mind. I was sold on monthly advertising for thousands per month and became very excited to advertise in their magazine. Unfortunately, print ads just aren't what they used to be and my business saw a very small return on this. They trapped me into a year long contract, but did not produce results. Their bill collections practice was unethical and illegal. When I found myself in a position of paying thousands a month with literally little to no return on my investment I begged for a cancellation and payment plan, but they had no mercy. The husband of the owner harassed my employees without my permission and even engaged in yelling over the phone with threats of a lawsuit and refusal to work out a payment plan for my small business. I was not only horrified that he discussed my private billing matters illegally with employees without my permission to my front desk staff. I filed an official complaint and request to stop several times (to only discuss my billing matters wirh me). Nonetheless, they used this unlawful tactic as an attempt to collect a debt. I had to file an official complaint with the federal trade commission due to ongoing illegal harassment and illegal billing practices. I encourage anyone who has experienced illegal billing collection methods from this company to file an official report with the FTC to fight against humiliation and unethical bill collection practice. This company doesn't stand behind their sales claims and doesn't care about you or your small business.

I think it's a monthly magazine, with special editions for Spring Break. Their pullout Happy Hour Guide is very useful. They show a grid of all the local pubs and bars offering happy hours, what and when they are, and where they are. Somebody has put a lot of research into the bars to find out all this info, and saves the thrifty student a lot of time and money. Most of the bars are located in the local university's vicinity. Their pictures are all of local places, with local people looking beautiful and chugging beer, dancing and having fun. The advertisements in here are slick, full color ads. They're usually for local bars and beer brands. I tend to check out the ads, as they often announce concerts and festivals. I appreciate the column where they interview a random Millennial, and ask them questions to get a glimpse into the generation. Pokemon is mentioned most of the time. A lot of the columns are features like how Maxim Magazine works- top 3 lists, and most articles are shorter than this Yelp review. There's sometimes coupons in here for freebies from local restaurants aimed at students. I believe that currently, Study Breaks serves UT, UTSA, Texas State, and Texas Tech.

There's some good, pertinent information in there, but it's more high school sports, maybe some movie reviews, and then very general stories that every other paper covers, most of them better. Their layout is kind of boring and of less graphical quality than the Statesman or CI. Plus, me personally, I'm a bit wary of any newspaper that includes a "Faith" section.

The Austin Business Journal is the best source for information on the business and real estate…read morecommunity in the area. They have in-depth information about deals happening locally that impact the economy of Central Texas. This newspaper publishes a lot of great local, and state-wide business news. They focus on real estate, and with Austin's real estate market going crazy, there's a lot to report on. They talk about the big companies who are moving to Austin, and the ways that this impacts the Lone Star State's economy. The best issue every year is the Book of Lists, which counts off top 10 of the largest of everything in Austin- brokers, bankers, land, etc. If you're looking to do business in the Austin area, that Book of Lists is a great way to get contacts. I wish that they'd put something fun in the newspaper, it all seems so serious at times. A puzzle or a comic strip would be nice. The paper is a weekly paper available by subscription.

They are recorded, so if you miss the live event just watch them when it's convenient. Still Austin offered some nice swag for those who RSVP'd for the Shinyribs show: a nice tasting of Still Austin's bourbon and a cute sipping glass. I am sitting here in the cosiness of my living room enjoying both. Can't wait to stream the recorded concerts featuring the Peterson Brothers and Bri Bagwell. Our paper is ready for a step up to a clean looking newsprint. Granite has all what we are looking for in a printer. My team took a field trip to see what Granite is all about. They have a corporate office and then their printer. I've met with their printing crew. I have nothing but a good understanding what they provide. Its a small crew of professionals who have mastered the materials. Spent a couple hours chatting with them and watched them perform their tasks at hand. After highlighting my concerns with our paper, it was apparent that needed to move over and let them take over our printing needs. This corporation exists solely to spin out copies of the scathingly funny and infuriatingly…read morefrustrating restaurant review books reflecting the opinions of Robin Goldstein and his chef buddies. Being a critic of any sort (food, music, book, etc) always is an invitation to be hated and maligned (yet secretly read in an avid fashion). Goldstein's books focusing on restaurants in Austin and Houston are undoubtedly a magnet for abuse and some hero worship. First of all, the writing is very good...and funny. Its combination of rapier sharp wit and sarcasm make for a very entertaining reading experience even if they're dissing your favorite restaurant. However, if you're honest with yourself, you'll find that they're usually quite accurate with their assessments. They are starting a website too. It will be interesting to see whether it competes with or complements Yelp. They have taken a swipe at Yelp-like websites in self-promoting ads in the front of their Houston dining guide... -------------------- "the steak was FATTY, then they reffused to take my 50 cent off coupon. my wife left in tears...the WORST MEAL IVE EVER HAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Ready for a Houston restaurant website whose reviews are actually useful? -------------------- Now those are fighting words to someone like myself who finds Yelp extremely useful. Being a Houstonian, I will only comment on the Houston guide. Its highlights (and lowlights) include: (1) The unjustifiably harsh C+ given to Houston's best steakhouse, Pappas Bros, yet, the review is hilarious because it's delivered as a series of Limericks (a favorite past time of this reviewer). (2) The review of the crap food at a local strip joint, The Men's Club, which also received a C+ (probably because grades aren't the only inflationary aspect of its ambiance). (3) The over-the-top gush-age over Da Marco, a very fine but not extraordinary restaurant. (4) The ballage to give Whataburger a C+ too! (5) Their dead-on "D" indictment of Willy G's (another restaurant ruined by the Tilman Fertitta corporate juggernaut). I suspect the Austin reviews engender similar comments.

Oh, Fearless Critic how I love and loathe thee…read more My new dining regime includes checking Yelp and then running to my copy of the Fearless Critic to see how much they match up. Usually if the reviews are varied, I'll be more willing to check it out to see who I agree with more. There are times that I've wanted to throw the book across the room. How dare they make snide comments about some of my favorite places? In the end though, the book has intrigues me. What they focus on tends to be pretty helpful, though I get irritated at their abhorrence to established goodies within the city. I sometimes get the feeling that they rail popular places just to spark controversy. But since controversy sells, more power to them. I've now made it a goal to visit their top restaurants and figure out how much I agree with them. So far, we're at about 50/50, so I'll be interested to see how we end up. It definitely entertaining to peruse a book with a friend and compare all of the differing opinions--a sure fire way to get people talking and keep a strong discussion going.

The Prensa! This bilingual magazine is about all kinds of…read moreissues impacting the South Texas and Hispanic community. They have lots of great general interest stories about new things around town, or efforts to improve San Antonio. My favorite is the artwork done by local artists and students, along with all the short stories and poetry done by local students. The artwork is always poignant and full of talent. The 'newspaper' does certainly lean a hard left. It is a good news source for recent Americans and the immigrant community. The advertisements are always relevant and topical. This magazine is a full color printed on newspaper. I think it comes out weekly. It's available at local HEBs. The best thing about this magazine is that it's free, Free, FREE! Be sure to pick one up fast, because they always run out at my grocer.
