Oh what a long and turbulent history I have had with Westboro. For a sociological assignment for school I actually had the guts to go to this place and do an assignment. Yes a church sermon by Phelps and Co. is just as scary as seeing them protest out on the streets. I also had the misfortune of going to their website that they have up... one I do not feel an obligation to promote or to encourage( and don't even want to mention the web site's name because it promotes hate from the get go) to go look at because it says how many days Matthew Shepard has been in hell. But no this is not the last time I encountered Phelps and Co. In my hometown of Fort Collins,CO Westboro came to protest... whatever at the time and luckily to my credit they did not recognize me as I went by them because they were oh so eager to recruit me the first time around. At some point after that I read that someone painted a swastika on Westboro's fence back in Topeka. Phelps was eager to claim the act a hate crime against him but with the kind of hate that his religion promotes is there even such a thing as a hate crime towards them? Not that I want or encourage any violence towards them but honestly the whole scenario seems kind of tit for tat. My friend who lives in Topeka mentioned that some of Phelps family are trying to run in local politics here but I have not heard if they were successful but I did hear a competitor mention that what Phelps's ideology is quickly condemned against the general public there is still a latent feeling that is shared with Phelps especially towards homosexuals. Perhaps this is true or perhaps not. I don't know. But Phelps has considerably distanced himself from many people that may have related to him oh so subtlety when he started protesting military funerals and indeed put his organization on the forefront as not being believable at all. Of course anyone with common sense would have known this from the beginning too. What Westboro Baptist Church and Fred Phelps symbolize is America's obsession with the extreme. Not to say other societies do not exercise this either but it is a thriving phenomenon here. Americans seem to have an attraction to the extreme such as extreme sports, extreme tattoos, extreme piercings, extreme politics and yes extreme religion. Much of this is to be daring, dogmatic, offending or to attract attention but my motto is that moderation and common sense is golden which seems to be in short supply. I have known many other people who have had a Baptist upbringing and they often mention that the concept of good and bad blended together so much you could not tell if God was good or evil and Satan vice versa. I was also told that some Baptists don't believe a Jewish Holocaust ever happened during World War II. I can't say all Baptist churches are like this and I KNOW not all Baptist churches are like Westboro but perhaps there is some problematic issues that happen within the denomination itself. Churches should teach how you should interact with people of all kinds of backgrounds on a daily basis without resorting to a daily fist fight. The people I have known with this upbringing and felt compelled to leave it have often had dissatisfied,troubled and fractured lives which is not to say because they were no longer Baptist but what was planted so early on when they were Baptist. read more

On line is a history of Fred Phelps and this church but much of 59-61 is not in the article due to a lot of litigation . In 1/61 my mother had to go get the gunship papers form Fred Phelps for president Obama;s mother when the authorities got involved trying to find her father;s reeves as she had been staying with her Mather's there. There are three cold cases in Topeka and no one would believe my second cousin as she searched in the middle of winter on the Kansas River bank. president obama was born in Topeka ks on 8/61. more on my face book starting 7.26.12 and daily recaps since. There was fear for my safety as also age 15. I began blogging last year when two fires in Topeka occurred where some of the records may exist on the true bio of the president and birth. I HATE this place. I had been living with my now estranged aunt and other aunt during my formative childhood years. First of all, the pastor asked to touch me inappropriately when I was but a mere child. I am a MAN, I'm a he, I'm a him, I don't get into that mentally ill stuff (haha derp internet reference (those who know: )), therefore this request was outside of his proclaimed morality and stance on queer rights. Secondly, there were too many sweaty, hot, big, hunky, glazed, absolutely ravishing men trying to engage in homosexual dalliances, and then turning around spouting some homophobic, pardon my French, rhetoric. This proves the depravity of men and the true beliefs of this church. I came out around two years ago in my daily life, and I just hope each and every one of the men here have the same privilege in the future, as they all seem to shroud their identity with discrimination. read more

I've been going to church all my life and it's been great except for one small thing. Every church I've been to keeps telling me that I need to follow the teachings of this Jesus fella. But what does some random Hispanic guy have to do with the Bible? On top of that, these churches told me that this guy wants me to love my neighbor? My neighbor is a 68 year old named Jerry. That would be gay! And to make matters worse, they said I should respect others for their differences just like this Jesus guy. I was so close to giving up on going to church entirely until I found the Westboro Baptist Church. When I tried telling people about the pastor and I's sweaty affair, it ended up being widely accepted by some of the other members. Although he would like to deny such claims, he loves me and I love him. He likes to preach about the hatred towards these groups, but it's not what he truly believes in his heart. He loves everyone. He's told me in confidence how much he would like for these different people to succeed and live their lives. He's also told me of several affairs he has with some of the other men in his congregation. For a group that likes to parade around and talk about these things, they sure do love perks of being with other men. This is just the experience I've had in the past year or two. I find any church using religion against people and as a weapon of hatred, you're not teaching the Lords words. The people running this church are very selfish and bigoted, it is not the lords teaching it is their inherent ignorance and unwillingness to not properly follow the commandments. A very open-minded group of people. They will keep you engaged in interesting dialogue, and love hearing your opinions on wordly views, such as religion and politics. Fred Phelps is especially interested. He's very respectful of religions that differ from his own. They also keep you very entertained by offering an arts and crafts class.
