My brother was in Hawaii a few years ago & he shared this story about how he was off the beaten path & came upon a run down gas station & convenience store. For the record - I've been to Hawaii several times but never had Poke there - to my utter shock & horror! Anyway, my bro said it was the kinda looking gas station you avoid just like in the movies. Well was he ever stunned - walked in & towards the back - Poke for sale. He really hesitated but was so hungry. Good thing he caved in cause he described it as the best Poke he ever had till today! Hawaii is the originator of Poke. I'll be honest I've been a bit slow to the Poke trend. I've tried it a couple times before but what caught my eye & my appetite this time was the sandwich board outside Westcoast Poke, advertising its daily specials. My gosh the Dynamite Poke absolutely tantilzed me. Flavours were 100% on point & delivered pure joy & happiness in mouth! Most definitely top marks for WCP! Bravo for freshness, presentation & cleanliness! I've tried the Coast Poke & thoroughly enjoyed it as well - Dynamite (Prawns) Coast (salmon). Oh one last thing - it's pronounced 'pow-kay' not 'poke' as in - I poked the bear. So say it right when you order it ok!?! Keep in mind that when you walk into most Poke shops, there is a strong pungent smell of the raw fish that's served. Trust me don't go with the urge to run away, cause the taste of Poke is absolutely a hit in all the right ways. I'm going to try & make 2023 the year I go hard at healthy eating via lots of Poke! I'm going to give up on ice-cream, donuts, chocolate, alcohol, cigar smoking etcetera ... ok staaaaaap! No way Jose! Who do you think I am!?! LOL! Clean minimalistic poke place in Ironwood Plaza in Richmond. Plenty of parking, and they're only offering take-out and delivery at the moment. Patient and friendly staff, that they take the time to explain the menu to you. Very generous portions (especially with the avocado). Lots of toppings to choose from. For example, crab salad and seaweed salad had a spicy and non-spicy option, which was my first time experiencing that on a poke menu personally. My order: Coast: my favourite of the 2 bowls I ordered - it's super saucy (burnt miso chili oil & garlic aioli sauce). The highlight was the fresh Atlantic salmon, and I really enjoyed the mangoes. The sweetness from the mangoes really ties the bowl together very nicely with an extra layer of flavour. Aloha: Ahi tuna in a lighter shoyu sauce, with seaweed salad & avocado. I like the chill vibes from the staff and in the restaurant. They had large colorful murals and paintings on the wall. staff were friendly and professional. I like that they don't make you feel rushed to order. Two young people were at the counter, each serving customers. There was a line of 4 people inside ahead of me and the line moved quickly. I assume because of covid safety precautions, the indoor dining area was not open and their tables and chairs were stacked on the side. I bought the cascade poke because the ingredients inside sounded good together. I was able to pick the base of either white rice, brown rice, or salad. I chose the brown rice and I thought it was fresh and fluffy. Not too chewy as some brown rice tends to be. I really liked the freshness of the ingredients in the poke as a whole. The Atlantic salmon was soft and tender and full of flavor you'd expect from fresh raw fish. I like the spicy seaweed salad inside which gives it a different texture to the poke. The kimchi cucumbers and sweet onions gave it a sort of sweet flavor in every bite. The thai chili and the jalapeno peppers made it super spicy! I was able to pick the spiciness level and i picked mild since i'm not a big fan of spicy food. It was still pretty hot! It was hotter than i expected given that i wanted it to be mild. Next time i'll try to look for a less hot poke. I liked that they also had a bunch of interesting options for topping such as crunchy fried onion bits, sesame seed, grounded up flavored greens(forgot the actual name), and other salty sounding things. Great food. On the decline. Staff used to be absolutely amazing and now are just rushed and disinterested. Food is not nearly as well prepared as it once was. Spicy Crack salad, one of the best sides ever, is no longer available. They now tend skimp on the meals through delivery services. Was seriously one of the absolute best poké bowls around in 2021. My first time trying poke in Vancouver! Every time when I think about poke, I want to go back to Hawaii, because they have the best poke! The meaty chunky ahi tuna mix with pineapple or rice...however, with Westcoast Poke, it certainly offers more than just poke. It's a variety of healthy eating style with lots of different topping options. I customized my order with some interesting choices, which I absolutely love. Thai chili sauce definitely has a bite to it, but the spicy flavor was very addictive and makes you want to have more! And the green curry added an unique flavor to your poke, which was very refreshing and good. It is located beside London Drugs by Ironwood plaza, so parking is not an issue at all. I love my poke so much I decided to try the Steveston westcost poke location as well and it was just as good as the one in Vancouver! My favorite protein to pick here still remains to be the salmon and prawns! The prawns are not the tiny little shrimp but actually nice chopped pieces of fresh plump prawns! Service is quick and friendly as usual and very organized. You can result tell between which items require additional cost and what doesn't which is always confusing at other like shops. My quest for healthy fast food offerings has led me to a variety of poke vendors, and I am absolutely in love with this one. They have a solid collection of curated bowls on the menu, and I selected the Cascade option on my first visit. I was pleased to have the opportunity to select the spicyness level on a scale of 1 to 5, and was satisfied with a level of 3. Anything higher than that and I'd probably need a shower stall to clean up the sweat afterwards (they don't have these on site). I was so pleased with my experience that I returned in the evening for the Dynamite bowl. I am a big fan of POKE, as a healthy alternative to fast / greasy 'junk' food. Dine in, late lunch just before 3pm. First time @ Westcoast Poke on Steveston Hwy. off #5 Road in the Ironwood Plaza shopping Mall. Restaurant is clean and tidy, seating fairly comfortable looking northward out to the car park, which has plenty of spaces and is free / easy. Westcoast Poke's review is a 'tale of two cities' type of experience. INGREDIENTS were fresh / tasty / enjoyable. Service was a mixed bag...had to change order takers mid way through due to 'communication' issues, AND the presentation / dine in was less than stellar. My brief was: LARGEST size for hungry man, NO farmed fish, FREE of gluten. Product knowledge of original server was either poor, or she was 'winging it' when she didn't know? Either way = unacceptable. Turns out only two of the fish proteins were NOT farmed, and she informed otherwise. We got onto the right track when SECOND server took over. HE was patient / exacting / helpful. When choosing base, a slight confusion in terms; SLAW, white rice, brown rice, coconut flavoured rice were offered. Turns out they call mixed green leaves 'slaw'? We know slaw as a 'DRESSED' salad? Why call mesclun mix or leaves a slaw? We opted for brown rice / coconut rice, BOTH natural fish proteins: salmon and ahi tuna, eschewing the FARMED options. Toppings we chose were NOT hot n spicy, and all were certified gluten free. Tobiko, edamame, seaweed were nice, mango taste free, others 'meh'. Dressings were kindly served on the side. (much appreciated as 1st timers we didn't know their flavours) shoyu citrus and another were ok at best, we requested tamari to augment / elevate the dish. Tamari was curiously "THIN"...not seen watery tamari before! Fish quality was very good. Tiny serving of ahi tuna and salmon cubes, not marinated, (UN HAWAiiAN style) Served in a round steep sided carton like material, eating was a tad awkward. Dine in using a throw away carton and plastic lid? seem wasteful to y'all ? Or? Ingredients atop one another never seemed to 'blend' into a cohesive POKE experience we've previously enjoyed. Visited Westcoast Poke for the first time today and picked up one of their reopening promos: classic bowl (upgraded to medium +$2) plus iced tea for $10. Everything tasted fresh and the combination of mix-ins was good. Overall the medium bowl was quite small and left me hungry. With that said, the protein portion alone was more generous than other poke shops and for that I would come back. Good poke! They have a menu of set bowls which looked good but I like how they do the build-your-own, so I went with that. I think their version of the build-your-own gives you a little more freedom to add what you want without increasing the cost. Notably, you can mix different proteins, 2 premium toppings are included, and smaller sizes get the same number of selections as bigger sizes, just a smaller portion. They also have a good selection in general of proteins, sauces, and toppings. I like their style of doing some of the toppings/sauces as "mix-ins" that get tossed with the base. I had a bowl with tofu. Although their tofu isn't marinated or seasoned, it took on the flavours of the mix-ins. I highly recommend the crab salad premium topping - it was fresh and a little sweet and very delicious! My other premium, the spicy seaweed salad was also very good and a little more interesting than the usual seaweed salad. The gochu garlic sauce was also an unexpected highlight, I was expecting a glaze but it was more like a sweeter spicy mayo. Prices are comparable to other poke shops in the Vancouver area. So Poke is the next big thing apparently. What we have here is more a a fusion of poke and a salad bowl rather than genuine poke like they have in Hawaii. I like this fusion however and authentic doesn't necessarily mean better, just different. At Westcoast Poke they have decent selection of toppings etc and they also offer wild sockeye unlike some of there local competitors. I found the poke to be well seasoned and fresh and the toppings to be plentiful. We ordered to pre-selected Chief and the Coast bowls but added some extras. Very nice clean looking poke place. Service was okay, greeted with a hello and thank you. I got a take out order. The food was good till I found a few strands of hair in my poke bowl. It was bad enough if there is 1 strand but in this case, there were at least 3... that's the most amount of hair I've ever seen in a dish in my entire life. Thanks to the recent summer heat, I've been here thrice already, I usually get the mixture of veggies as a base (trying to stick to my low carb diet) then pick out my own protein (usually fresh scallop/ atlantic salmon/albacore tuna) and various topping options! Some toppings like edamame/masago/fried garlic are unlimited whereas there are premium ones like avocado/seaweed salad that will cost you extra $. I noticed the people behind the counter weigh the protein too with a digital scale. My favourite dressing is the miso ginger soy one! One time, when I was a bit lazy (to customise), I opted for the Pacific bowl and loved it as well! The place is rather small so I always order to go. Sometimes line up can be long so bring your patience & don't go too hungry as some customers can take foreverrr to decide.. The young staff is always pleasant & helpful. I definitely had to give this place a try after hearing positive things from my sister, and this location is about 5 minutes from my family's house. I'm a big fan of Poke, so I'm down to try anything. I came in for lunch and grabbed a build your own bowl. I was pretty pleased to see all the options available, but they do have a few more restrictions on how many of the toppings you can have included in their base price. Portions do seem to be smaller (Poke is purchased by the ounce as opposed to scoop) but they do have brown rice and a larger variety of sauces compared to other places. This is a tiny but cute and clean poke restaurant in the Ironwood Plaza outdoor mall, a few stores down from the BC Liquor store (my main landmark. hahahaha!). My kid and I recently got take-out poke bowls here and we enjoyed our meals a lot! A few of the positive features: -as with most poke places, there are a variety of bowls to choose from (we got the "snack" size, which is the smallest available, for $10. This size was perfect for me but my kid was still a bit hungry and probably should've gone for the medium" -we liked how there were a few different base options (different rices or lettuce/salad), or you can combine any two -they have a variety of bowl combos to choose from or you can totally customize your own bowl (which is what we opted to do) -they have a decent amount of proteins to choose from (we both chose the salmon). Note: they meticulously weigh or measure how much of these you get (our tiny salmon scoops were inspected carefully and the guy carefully removed the extra one or two salmon cubes that went over the tiny scoop edge) -they have a very good selection of unlimited add-ins (i.e., edamame, seaweed, orange fish roe-i forget the name of this but it's good!, - green onions, etc.), and a super selection of unlimited toppings (i.e., crunchy fried onions and/or garlic, taro strips, sesame seeds, all sorts of other seeds and legumes, stuff I never saw before or know the names of - but everything was good!). And a decent selection of various sauces to put on top. -everything was fresh (super important when you're dealing with raw seafood!). -the counter guy was extremely patient and helpful with our orders and explaining everything to us. All in all, I wouldn't hesitate to return here. Our meals were very good. The ingredients here are usually very fresh and everything is consistent. However, today my poke bowl was super off compared to the other times. I usually order cascade or build your own bowl. Today, the rice was almost to the point where it wasn't edible. It had large chunks and it was super hard. Almost felt like the rice was old or it was just at the bottom of the rice cooker. I would rate this place a 4/5 if it's consistent with their ingredients. I ate a quarter of my rice because of that. Otherwise, this place would be at least a 4/5 for a poke place in my books. The servers were friendly and helpful. In terms of food quality, the brown rice was cooked thoroughly and not mushy. The ingredients were fresh. I ordered a mix of tako and salmon and the amount is kind of less than other places. They used a scale to measure and so I wonder whats the weight is per portion... The sauce I picked was the miso ginger soy. I could taste the spark of light ginger flavour, but not much flavour from the miso. It was more like a refreshing ginger soy flavour. It was unfortunate that they did not have edamame when I visited. The server said they were "defrosting" it. Also, perhaps I have missed it, but I don't see anything like tomatoes or corn as toppings. It would be nice to see these additions. Overall, I will go back if I am in that area. read more

Portion size seems to be smaller than the other poke places in town. I got a bit confused with the menu board for the proteins. I normally get the largest offering (3 scoops) but Westcoast sells them by the oz and to the furthest right there's a board with the prices per 100g for each protein (explained by the owner down below). Does that mean I can get all of the proteins as long as it's 5oz? Anyways, I chose three kinds since that's the norm for me; salmon, tuna and scallop. The time I went they were out of the featured base so I got my regular half and half. It may be price for its size but their green curry sauce is amazing! I never thought curry would actually work with poke. The bitter part of the night was that the space is small with limited seats and there were two girls that were done with their poke but sat there to chat for another 30 mins while we hovered behind them. I thought the staff could have said something. If I do make it back here, I think I'll be getting mine to go if there are no seats. Good but expensive for the portion. They say it's due to the quality of ingredients. I eat sushi regularly. The salmon and tuna West Coast Poke serves is comparable to any average sushi restaurant. I do not buy in to the price is higher because of the quality of the ingredients. The food is very tasty but ultimately they either need to increase their portion size or decrease their price. The price for two is comparable to a good sit down restaurant. Suggestions for West Coast Poke: 1. Improve your portion to price ratio. Too expensive for the area you serve. 2. I enjoy west coast poke but I would not recommend you order from west coast poke on skip the dishes. On three of my order they barely put sauce and for my fourth bowl they just didn't add sauce at all (it was very clear it did not have sauce because I ordered two difference sauces and not one was on it). I tried to call to make a complain right away but it went straight to voicemail and then it said their voicemail was full so don't bother calling them for accommodations!
