It incorporates a triple staircases in one so that if you are going down and someone is climbing up you will not meet each other or even be aware that you have passed them. This well worth a visit as there are some lovely walk to be had at the top of the shaft. Although the old barracks have all gone you can still see where they stood.

The cliffs are a stunning sight, there are a few different walkways, make sure you allow couple of hours to look around. Enjoyed the view down to the ferry docks, I can only imagine how beautiful it would be to see it from the water. A must visit place for a great experience. Being a visitor to these parts, the distance between the town of Dover and the cliffs wasn't apparent until I looked up arrival by train to the city (roughly 1.5 hours from where I was in London), followed by the distance to walk between the city and the cliffs (easily a 45 minute walk). At this point I decided a pre-set itinerary with reliable, organized transportation was probably the way to go, being the least stressful option to plan. For those wanting to take their time, car rental is an option, but for me it seemed more tedious and tiring to plan out. All that being said, the cliffs are a beautiful and historically meaningful destination to visit. Walking from the parking lots to the park, at the trail head there's a small, nicely maintained visitor center, cafe and gift shop, and a small used bookseller pop-up as of September 2023. There are a few options for trails that make different loops around the cliffs. Being on limited time, I ended up walking the shortest path which took about 30-35 minutes round trip. It takes you to a viewpoint where edges of the white cliffs are visible.There is a longer trail that takes about 1.5 hours round trip to the light house on the eastern edge of the cliffs, which looked like a lovely, fairly easy hike around a gradually rolling slope. If I had more time I definitely would've made it over! A note for accessibility--while it's a easy walk for most able folks, and the trails are well-worn, they are still dirt paths which aren't paved, so this may be challenging to families with small children, and perhaps inaccessible to those with more significant handicaps.

There's the Dover Marine War Memorial (Marine Station in the Western Docks), British Legion War Memorial (on the promenade), and this beautiful, must-see memorial (also on the prom). The main words read: "Es flogen gegen England" ... German for "It flew against England." Its claim to fame is the memorial is armored plating, and gives the dates shells were fired from a long range gun at Sangatte (a township in the Pas-de-Calais district, on the northern coast of France on the English Channel). Erected by the Dover Harbour Board in 1954, it reads: "PRESENTED TO THE TOWN OF DOVER / BY THE BRITISH LEGION, CALAIS BRANCH Section of armoured plating dismantled from one of the German long range guns at Sangatte, Calais. The 84 rounds recorded formed part of the 2226 shells fired from these batteries at the harbour and town of Dover during the period 1940 to 1944. " It has a perfect location ... right off the promenade, overlooking the water, just a stone's throw from the deep, pebbled beach on Dover's Outer Harbour. To me, it joins the White Cliffs as a must-see while in Dover!

Visited April 2015: "Another spot the cliffs and sea met"…read more We were planning on going to the White Cliffs of Dover beach, but we missed our turn and there was massive grid lock that we did not feel comfortable turning around. Then we spotted this location on the exit and thought we'd give it a try. It was extremely windy near the sea wall, and felt like it was going to rain. We went into the lighthouse near the car park (need to pay to park), and looked around at the sea. We thought we could see a ship far out, along with a ferry on its way to France. We also thought we could make out some mountains but weren't sure if our minds were playing tricks on us. We discussed how some people have stated you can see France on a good day from Dover since it's so close across the Sea. We went down to the sea wall to take some pictures. On the wall, there was a plaque talking about Samphire Hoe, and the horizon landscape before us. Sure enough those mountains we thought we saw were real; along with the ship. At the Hoe, we were able to use the public facilities for free, and there was a café available. I did not see any prices for the items they were selling except for some rosemary plants. This place has hiking paths along the shore. Definitely a great place to go if you don't want a crowd.

Reculver Towers is the remains of a 12th century church, which is located on the remains of Roman…read moreand Saxon buildings. The Towers themselves are perched on the top of a large cliff, which has been heavily eroded in the past and is the reason why there are only partial remains of the church left standing. Due to its location on the north coast, the towers lend themselves to some lovely photographs with the sunset to their rear and the sea to one side. There is a large stony beach at the base of the cliffs, which is ideal for dog walking rather than bathing, as the Thames Estuary leaves it somewhat muddy. Also be aware that the tide can come rather far in at certain times of the year, partially cutting off some areas at the base of the cliffs!! There are reputed to be a decent number of fossils to be found along the beach, especially following storms, though me and the dog have never found anything exciting. There is ample parking in the vicinity of the towers, good paths suitable for wheelchairs and buggies along the cliff top. There is also a pub very close by and a small shop/amusements arcade associated with the nearby caravan park. All in all, a nice place for a picnic or for a stroll.

The central point is that of a statue of an RAF pilot looking out over the skies towards France, with the statue itself situated in the centre of 3 paths, which when you see them from a height actually represent the three blades of a propeller. The whole site feels quiet and respectful, and like all war memorials is extremely moving.
