First time visit to this University on Sunday, 6/22/25. Arrived at 11:00 AM. There were a few Basketball Camps going on at the Wade King Rec Center. We got to tour the fitness center, gymnasium and pool area. Then took a leisurely walk around the campus to see the different buildings - Fine Arts building, the Library, Residence Halls, Science Building, and the Viking Union. All were closed since it was a Sunday, but still enjoyed walking around to see the layout and creative structures and different building locations. The natural environment with views of the Cascades and hills full of trees across the ocean was very calming and peaceful. read more

CAUTION: Don't come here. This university changed a lot, seemingly for the worse. If something goes wrong, watch out for the caring front some professors put up. I fell for it and it costed me. I truly believed that when another student told my professor that I felt suicidal, that I would be helped. Instead my tuition was wasted. I was told to enroll in courses that had no site placement. Then when I asked my professor about the shared concern from my classmate regarding how I felt suicidal, she gaslighted me. She forgot that my classmate said I felt suicidal. Mind you, my classmate shared this information without my permission. We had a three hour meeting after class that I can't believe she forgot... I thought I'd be supported but instead I was ignored for the rest of the year due to the courses that did not exist. I was then suddenly removed from my program because I was told I was not ready for my final quarter. I would have been ready if I actually had learned what the missing courses failed to provide due to not existing at all. All of my classmates noticed how I was treated, but nothing was ever done to help me, because then the school year ended and everyone graduated. The program I was in had high suicide and mental health stats, which I learned after I graduated. In hindsight, the pressures of how challenging the program is was a huge source of stress, which was basically mocked at the front door, during orientation. Do not expect this university to actually care about you as a person. You only seem to matter if you can contribute financially, but otherwise, you're completely on your own. Other things happened too. I'm not sure why there weren't better actions in place. After my sudden program removal, I was actually preyed on by a student who took advantage of me and raped me. And if that wasn't enough insult to injury, I never used my college degree for anything because my credentials were incomplete and all my financial aid ran out, even though I had a full ride, which was all wasted and never reimbursed, when I wasn't provided courses. This was all extremely painful for me to go through and i would argue that I never deserved what happened to me. I hope that this isn't the standard for how this university treats students who feel suicidal. Before my classmate shared anything about suicide, no professors could tell. So I felt exposed and then discarded. This was so brutal and unexpected at the end of college. My life has not been the same since. There are better colleges that won't make you go through what I went through. WWU is a high risk and a gamble in my honest opinion. You don't get a nice college name in the end. Anywhere else is better. I hope this helps. read more

I have been through Western Washington University a few times over the course of my life thus far. A number of friends have attended here for university and have generally had few to no complaints. The campus is spread out and the roads are relatively easy to navigate. The on-campus vegetation, such as trees, are well spaced. The roads are a mix of flat and hilly. People out and about on campus I have found to be friendly and not really standoffish. read more

This review is a campus walk-around only. I have no insight to the workings of the university. My high school age niece wanted to visit the university and see the campus. Overall, it's a lovely campus. Open space, plenty of greens, art work throughout the campus, a rose garden, and a view of the water on the far end. Visually, it looks pretty good. The campus itself is fairly old, since the end of 1800's. Some of the buildings show its age on the inside. We didn't go into too many. The library building and its reading room are quite nice. Most of the buildings are the older, low height buildings. My niece pointed to one of the old white ceramic water fountains that even I haven't seen for a long time. She's never seen one. We spoke with someone in the admissions office and picked up some brochures. We also learned the basics for in-state tuition, one year with proof of residency, such as utility bill and driver's license. read more

Most people don't realize that the Wilson Library is a publicly funded institution and open to the general public. Located just west of Red Square near the center of campus, Wilson Library faces Old Main and is one of the oldest structures on campus. Located on the top floor of the original library building, the Wilson Reading Room houses a portion of the library's Northwest Collection and is primarily dedicated to quiet study. Often referred to as the "Harry Potter Room" by students because of its resemblance to the main hall in the Harry Potter movies, the Wilson Library Reading Room is typically furnished with large wooden tables and chairs. The reading room is also utilized for special events by the university and foundation. Today, I'm attending an event featuring The Justices of the Washington State Supreme Court who are on campus today and hearing ital arguments in a couple of cases in the Wilson Reading Room tomorrow. read more

Mid size liberal arts university with average class sizes of 27. Pretty campus and good programs

My daughter and I visited WWU as one of the colleges she was interested in attending in the fall. As a parent, I was VERY underwhelmed. The buildings and grounds appear tired, grey, old, and just well.......underwhelming. I saw political signs on doors (WHY IS THIS ALLOWED AT STATE/PUBLIC funded Universities??) and numerous political groups and activists in the common fountain area that kids walk through to and from classes, dorms, and parking lots. Quite frankly, it appeared a lot like Evergreen State College (which is not a good thing in my mind). If this is what is going on out in the public, what indoctrination is going on in the classrooms? Why can't we teach our kids all views and let them decide what to think? Anyway, the dorms were old and tired. Small, cramped and actually smelled like an old musty hotel building. The cafeteria food was nasty and there were not a lot of food options on campus. My daughter sent emails and called to inquire about the education department and didn't get a response for 20 days. If that is how they treat potential students they are trying to recruit (well actually not really trying), how are they with kids who are there? I am guessing, not super responsive. The view was beautiful and that is about all that really impressed me. Surrounding Bellingham area was nice. Keep looking kiddo. read more

It's beautiful even on a rainy day. My son transferred here and it was the best move ever. He has made terrific friends. Received support and encouragement from faculty. And has grown as person. And graduated. It's the right size campus if your looking for a mid-sized school that still feels intimate. The energy is relaxed. Good for studying and learning. The surrounding neighborhood is easy to navigate. The Fairhaven District is charming. You should at least visit the campus before judging. read more

What a truly terrific place. I loathe who I may have become, had I not chosen to go here versus the alternatives. A fantastic school - with a beautiful campus, strong academic programs, a geographic area with so much to do (hiking, skiing, mountainbiking, wakeboarding, etc), and an awesome town - Bellingham! Since my attendance here, I have lived in 4 other states, spent lengths of time in 14 countries - and I can still say with all sincerity, some of my fondest memories lie with WWU and vicinity. I have my gripes, but only because I got a C in political theory. I suppose I should take that up with the professor though. The campus food is gross, the tuition is hiking, the dorms are nothing to write home about... but the university(academics) itself is pretty fantastic. That's the real reason why I'm there anyway. The programs and departments are small, and the student:professor ratio is not something you'd see at your typical public university. While I can't speak for their masters programs, I can say that my undergrad studies had truly been an exceptional experience. We were here for a graduation (not mine). So I only saw the campus from an outsiders view. So the gymnasium, where the graduation took place, was a normal small college gym. It was a nice gymnasium, but not one of the $100M mega sports arenas you see on ESPN. Which would be so far out of place it would ruin this campus. My Alma mater and boy do I miss the times there. The campus is so beautiful in the spring time, and the town of Bellingham is just so much more laid back then Bellevue or Seattle. Went back for a visit for Alumni weekend a couple days ago, and the campus has changed so much. So many new buildings and residences have been constructed since I finished in '04. Part of me wishes I was going to school there now, but I can't change time, and I wouldn't trade the time I spent here for anything. P.S. I can't believe it still stands, but the tower on Sehome Hill is still there!! The view has changed a little over the years (those trees sure grow fast) but it's still one of the best in the entire town... read more

The recreation center has very rude employees. I used to work there and I asked if they can set up the volleyball net and they said it didn't fit on the basketball courts even though I knew it did but I didn't say anything about it and then I heard them talking about how stupid I was and what an idiot I was. This is not okay...there's no customer service at all and people like that should not be at the front desk. Then I came back to have it set up a few hours later and he was clearly annoyed and took 20 minutes to put the piles in the holes for us. They used to have amazing employees here and the new hires are just so rude. read more

Western is an amazing school with a beautiful campus, in a great town. It offers the perfect combination of strong academics, smaller size classes, with a friendly faculty and student body. I obtained my graduate education at WWU years ago: it prepared me very well for my professional career. As a WWU grad, I hate to talk poorly about my alma mater, but I will say this: if you have the grades and SAT scores to go somewhere better, I'd recommend doing so. WWU is a good school. It's also not very expensive (comparatively). There are a smattering of decent professors (and some less than decent, too), and Bellingham is a truly lovely city. My biggest personal complaints about the school involve the surprising amount of red tape involved in just about every action a student takes and the low amount of networking opportunities during and after school. It seems few WWU grads move up much in the world of careers. The school also has virtually zero name recognition outside northwestern Washington state. Surprisingly, this can be important on a resume. I enjoyed my time, studied a lot, learned a bit, and grew to love Bellingham, but I imagine my time and money would have been better spent at a different school. read more

Excellent school academically and a lot of fun to go to. Western is very outdoorsy and liberal, and attracts students and faculty that fit this mold. But there are plenty of conservative, religious folks also, as this is a teaching school. But having both groups is a good thing because you meet people from all different backgrounds. The Surrounding area has a laid back atmosphere with lots of unique things to do. While the school has NO greek system, if you are looking for a school where you can party, they can be found pretty easily still. There are several excellent breweries and dozens of bars available, with the best known being Boundary Bay Brewery. You are 45 minutes from Skiing Mount Baker, and the town fronts Bellingham Bay. There is ample hiking, biking, rock climbing, and water sports. If they have a decent program you want (which should be your key deciding factor about all schools), or if you are undecided, I cannot recommend this school enough. Their strengths include Teaching, Psych, Environmental Programs, Vehicle Engineering, Computer Science and Business. Do a little digging into the program that interests you, and check to make sure they have a decent one. Class sizes are small, typically 20-30 for upperclassmen classes, with only the freshman GRE classes reaching into the 100-200 range. Professors are responsive as a whole and you occassionally bump into them in town, particularly at Boundary Bay or Uisce's (Ish-Ka's). After graduation, the university was pushing hard to get me to donate to their endowment (which i understand) and to join the alumni association, and all of that jazz, which is true of any school. At western, since it is a smaller regional school, they need the money more, and get less, so you need to understand why they do that. But that is my only gripe. read more

We just got back from taking our high school junior on a campus tour. This is NOT a rating of the whole school but just of our Feelings from the day. My whole life, I've been proud to be a stuck up Pacific Lutheran University prig. My parents met there. I met my dazzling wife there. Being a PLU Prig is in my babies DNA. It goes so strong in me that I am amazed at how I fell in love with WWU! After our beautiful, sunny afternoon on the hill by the bay, listening to the darling dancer's very well prepared tour; after watching the excitement grow as Mr. Phoenix listed his love for WWU, watching my three son's faces glow from their forum, watching students interact as they passed to class and meeting Bryce in his Fairhaven home; after a juicy lamb burger at Boundary Bay and after our sunset ride back home along Chuckanut Drive... After our wonderful day at WWU, I can see my son at Western. From the outside, it looks like an astounding place to create a future. ...At the very least: It Ain't Central !! read more

The teaching program here is top notch, an almost fully imbedded approach, it leaves you with hundreds of classroom hours before you begin student teaching. Campus life is full and vibrant. Since beginning here I have been a member of 6 separate clubs and I have been leadership in 3. If you have a passion for service and making the world a slightly nicer place, this may be the college for you. There is no Greek system and no football team. If you are looking for something like that you will be VERY disappointed. The little college in the woods also, features great programs for full car design, philosophy, Canadian studies, and like I mentioned earlier, education. If you are visiting campus remember to check out the 4th floor of Wilson library (called the Harry Potter room), the environmental science building's mini earth science museum, the sculptures, and grab a picture in front of old main. read more

Nice campus, but a bit too hippy for me. I am not a big fan of some of the activities that go on at or as a part of the university (students or faculty). There is a reason why it's called North Berkeley (California)... Then again, I have met some pretty cool people from WWU. Lot's of teachers seem to graduate from this school. Doesn't seem to have much of a community following for their sports programs, but the students seem to like attending. read more

Review is for the Campus Tour Only. As a parent of a senior and junior in high school, I have been on my share of college campus tours recently. First of all, the campus is beautiful although we were there on a rainy, low cloud day and really could not see the amazing views. My complaint is that at Western unlike other tours, they don't include an admissions or facts presentation, provide any materials or provide an admissions counselor to you. This is unlike any of the other eight schools I have toured. As a parent, I was left with no facts of admission requirements, costs, etc. They showed us an in use dorm room in the older dorms, which was complete with trash and underwear in full view. This is not the way to impress prospective students and parents. The three students who led the tour were very nice, knowledgeable and passionate about the school and this review is not aimed at them. The leadership of the University should take note, I am sure it is a great school, but we were not impressed. read more

Western was established as the Northwest Normal School, a teachers' school for women, by Phoebe Judson in Lynden, Washington, in 1886.[11] Eventually the school moved to Bellingham (then "New Whatcom"), and through the efforts of William R. Moultray and George Judson (Phoebe's son),[12] Governor John McGraw signed legislation establishing the New Whatcom Normal School on February 24, 1893. The first official class entered in 1899, composed of 88 students. Western Washington University (WWU or Western) is one of six public universities in the U.S. state of Washington. It is located in Bellingham, and is the northernmost university in the contiguous United States. WWU was founded as the state-funded New Whatcom Normal School in 1893, succeeding a private school of teaching for women. WWU offers a variety of bachelor's and master's degrees. Beautiful university campus in picturesque Bellingham, WA. Without going into any details about the school itself, I just wanted to share my appreciation for the WWU campus. Bordered on one side by the Sehome Hill Arboretum and the other by downtown and Bellingham Bay, there are some wonderful views to be had anywhere you look. The arboretum is riddled with trails so it's easy to go for a quick walk in the woods any time you like (plus there's a tower on top with great views), and when the weather is clear you can see all the way to Canada across the Salish Sea from anywhere along the High Street side of the campus. The buildings on campus range from classic to modern, but mostly blend well with their surroundings. There is a central 'Red Square' which features a huge fountain and is often a center for student activities. The University grounds are easily walkable and include many footpaths as well as a several bicycle paths and corrals. The landscaping features a wide variety of trees, shrubs, flowering plants, and grassy fields/hills. One of the coolest features, though, is Western's outdoor sculpture collection: a few dozen structures, figures, and objects ranging from small to enormous, practical to mesmerizing, and cute to baffling (one of my favorites has to be the 'Man Who Fucks Bear' statue in front of the library). There are also a few cafes located around campus where you can grab a coffee or a snack when school's in session. Of course, another thing I love about visiting the WWU campus is that it's FREE-- so why not? (You might want to park your vehicle somewhere else, however: the University parking enforcement is vicious) read more

Everything is lovely unless you are living on campus and forced to have a food plan. The food here is absolutely gross in the dining halls. They get all their food from the infamously corrupt corporation, Aramark, and it reflects it greatly. They say they are willing to accommodate allergies and special diets but they rarely ever respond to inquiries and have not changed one thing yet. The dining hall and it's managers are awful. I have called and emailed countlessly, once sending an email to six different employees and heard back from one. When I responded to their response, I never heard back. read more

Well, what a great place in a small border town. It's got everything you need without the big city distractions and pollution. The student dining center has a gorgeous view of the Bellingham Bay. I was so excited to go to Western so I was really disappointed when I realized that they are really just committed to looking "woke" on the outside but really not caring about their students. Lasted a quarter here and after a few nights of sobbing over how incompetent the housing people are. Thank you for contributing to a 4 month long nervous break down for me, Western. And thanks for setting up lots of deadlines and dates while not communicating at all. I was planning on going back up for this fall but they messed up al my information so by the time my housing was "renewed" there was virtually no housing left. I've heard a few people ask about Western and tell them to avoid at all costs. This school doesn't really care about the students, they are super shady and seem like they are out to get every single nickel and dime out of you. This school is a joke. read more

If you're like me and do not have an idea for specific majors when you start, that is OK; you can explore whatever you like to and go from there. Alright, check it out. I exclusively review food, but thanks to the powers that be, I couldn't find separate Yelp pages for the specific dining halls at Western Washington University. I guess I'll just have to berate them here. There are 3 different dining halls on campus: Fairhaven, Viking Commons, and the Ridgeway Commons. The food at these establishments is completely indistinguishable: in each hall, there is a salad bar, sandwich table, 'pizza' table, and grill area. These areas aren't too dissimilar to the various circles of Hell detailed in Dante's journey, ranging from bland disinterest to lakes of frozen lettuce. There is a grill area, at which the student staff dish up dozens of eerily similar burgers, chicken sandwiches and grilled cheeses every hour. For the vegetarians among us, there is a vegan option that tastes approximately how an antidepressant makes you feel. Now, to the newcomer's unmarked palate, these burgers taste pretty good! However, your gluttony comes at a steep price: the longer you stay and eat the burgers here, the more they taste like dispassionate nothingness; and trust me, that's not just my crippling depression talking. If that doesn't suit your fancy, that's okay. There is also a 'healthy option' booth at every hall dedicated to the production of pizza. They always make at least a plain cheese and a pepperoni pizza, the latter of which is generously garnished with at least 5 slices of pepperoni per 12" pizza. Occasionally they stretch their culinary horizons with other exotic options, like a margarita or spicy chicken. These are forgettable enough to not warrant any more description. I want to stress that my above critique, while harsh, does not take into account the quality of pizza craftsmanship that goes into each pie. Imagine going to Little Caesar's, and right after paying for your pizza the suicidal employee behind the counter makes you roll a die to determine how many shits the guy is going to give about making an edible dish. Some days you hit the jackpot and roll a natural 20, and the student behind the counter decides to take such attention to detail as to actually cover the tomato paste with cheese and fully cook the pizza. But some days, your luck runs out and the pizza maker, be it apathy, spite or low wages, somehow doesn't feel like cooking the pizza all the way. This wouldn't be so surprising if you were going to such a snazzy establishment as Mod's Pizza or The Rock, but when you undercook a pizza in a conveyor belt oven I don't know what to tell you. Finally, at least in the Ridgeway Commons, there is always a small bowl of Caesar salad that I think is there as a joke on someone because there is so much dressing in that container you might as well call it a soup bowl. So at this point you may be thinking to yourself, "Wow, this guy's kind of a douche and not very funny! Can't he just eat something else?" Yeah, you can eat something else. There's a salad area where Western's school administration doesn't trust their students enough to make their own sandwiches, so the dining halls make sure to put the slowest, most arthritic employee on the job. This functions kind of like a carnival sideshow; Ask the employee for deli ham, and watch in amazement as the sandwich scientist spends the next 120 seconds precisely dividing and counting the proper number of ham slices. Ask for mayonnaise and either be disappointed or receive a creamy surprise with more oily, beaten eggs than you ever thought you could stomach. Peculiarly enough, although the university doesn't think that the 'adults' living there can make their own sandwich, they do put enough stock in their students to craft their own salads. The salad bars are actually the best part of each dining hall, and feature a nice arrangement of vegetables that you can either use to make a nice salad or futilely attempt to force some flavor into a burger or chicken sandwich. If you're anything like me, then you'll take a step back one day and realize you've eaten the same exact salad every day for the past 2 weeks. The small piece of hope at the bottom of Pandora's dining hall is the soft serve ice cream machine. When it works, it's like a little miracle from the heavens. When it doesn't, which is often, then it's just another slap in the face. Western's dining system sounds bad. And it is pretty bad. But at the end of the day, it's really just your basic cafeteria food. It doesn't pretend to be something it's not; what you see is pretty much what you get. I believe that the dining halls are a good metaphor for the rest of the university: not that great, but just kinda something to keep you alive for a little bit longer. read more

Terrible school, terrible experience. I was a Studio Art Major of Winter 2015-Spring 2016 pursuing a Bachelor's in Fine Arts Degree. I dropped out of Western during Spring Break of 2016. It was the best decision I had made in a really long time! First of all, don't ever attend college as an Art Major. Waste of money. But my experience with the Art faculty was very frustrating. They lacked professionalism, organization skills and communication. They were the most incompetent staff members I have ever come across. The program was a joke. Do not EVER become an Art Major! Besides the fact that being an Art Major is a complete joke, making friends is also a complete joke. I couldn't relate to anyone. Western is very homogenous however much they claim they are "all-inclusive." A bunch of different types of white people does not make you eclectic Western! I couldn't stand the foundation Western was built upon and the lies they projected onto their students. I am white myself but had the most trouble relating to all the many white faces I saw around me. My peers were uninviting, dressed all the same (leggings, burkenstocks, plain t-shirt and a scarf), narrow minded and ignorant. Even when I first arrived in Bellingham, I felt out of place with the general public. This is one of the reasons why I dropped out as soon as I did. Bellingham is too small, too many of the same people. It is a very boring town. Not much else around it either. Beautiful was Bellingham Bay, but that is the only attraction. During my sister's time as a student at WWU, she experienced an injury due to a car crash that left her having to use crutches to get to her classes. The campus is not very disability friendly and her psychology professors (who you would think would be the most understanding) were not understanding at all if she was even a few minutes late. Now, my fiance goes to WWU. He is a veteran who has been unable to obtain residency due to the strict state laws about working in WA prior to becoming a student. He even tried to petition through me, a resident, but was denied. As a result, he was unable to extend his GI Bill. Even when he was using his GI Bill, there was a new problem every single semester with his financial aid that took an incredible amount of time and effort to attempt to resolve. This semester, they say he has exhausted his Yellow Ribbon and DUE TO THEIR MISTAKE during the Fall semester they awarded him money they should not have, and took that money out of his refund for the Spring semester without notifying him. They took this money during the pandemic, which left him with only a $1500 refund for the ENTIRE semester to buy his books and pay for rent when our rent is almost $2000 a month. The Veteran's office on campus and some of the professors have been great at WWU, however, due to the overall incompetency of the Financial Aid department, I do not see how anyone could afford to live and attend school here. read more

It is a great school, and I have learned a lot while going there. The only thing keeping me from posting 5 stars is the fact some of the teacher I have had could care less about my learning and when going to their office during office hours to ask questions acted indifferent toward me. Most of the teachers have been the total opposite, it has just been those few bad apples that keep it from 5 stars. read more

Western is a great school in regards to teachers and classes. I have taken some of the best classes of my life here and met some truly amazing people. Most of the professors have been here for years and know exactly what they're doing in the classroom. But the administration is truly awful. I ended up paying almost as much in fees as I did for tuition a quarter, for things that I never even used or ever would use. I also got charged late fees constantly when they did not process my payments fast enough. Even when I called to tell them that I had paid on time and they checked to see that I had, they told me that they did not do late fee waivers. Even though it wasn't my fault. They also did not tell me that I would not be getting a dorm on campus until about a week before move-in, so I had to scramble to find somewhere else to live. The administration at this school seems to care nothing for its students, and most of my friends who go here feel the same way. I would still recommend coming here, but be aware that you're probably going to be very frustrated at some point. read more

We took a tour of the facility with our daughter, who was recently accepted at WWU. The campus was amazing. Strange how you can live in an area so long and not know what's right next door. The experience was extremely enlightening, and exactly what our Daughter needed to start her transition from High School. My only complaint is that the sessions we attended afterwards didn't seem to be well described, and the content not as pertinent to the incoming students as it could have been. The professors seemed to be a bit lost on what to discuss with the groups they had. The tour guides and other staff though were very enthusiastic for a cool rainy Washington day. read more

Zane Gooding gave my associate and me a tour of WWU and the surrounding Bellingham area. Tour was complete with ModSock, crepes, almost pie, and the introduction of twitter mutuals.
