I cannot recommend her highly enough! Orkney is a fascinating place, with thousands of years' worth of history. And Caz is an incredible guide- she arranged our days to show us such a wide variety of places and types of sites, all while giving us an amazing amount of knowledge and information, to help us put all of it in context. She is a true expert and I was so impressed by her vast knowledge of all the sites, the history, and the islands. She also knows how other tour groups work on the island, so was able to alter our plans sometimes in order to give us a better (and less peoply!) experience. Even before we Californians arrived, Caz was a helpful resource, giving me detailed advice on the clothing to bring. That advice really helped us to be comfortable the entire time, so we could focus on what we were seeing and experiencing. This was truly a once in a lifetime trip. Being at the Stones of Stenness and Ring of Brodgar, stone henges older than Stonehenge, with no one else around, was such a moving experience, and my favorite of the sites we visited. If you are interested in history, anything from the Neolithic to modern time, you will love touring with Caz!

When travelling back home after visiting Stromness for the Orkney Folk Festival we had a…read morenightmarish situation, our tent was taking a long time to pack away and there happened to be no Stromness taxis available to take is to the Ferry Terminal. So we begged our tent neighbours for a lift which they graciously gave us. We then just made it at 08:55 for the 09:00, this then happened to be way too late to board as the ferry had already started travelling up the pier. The friendly staff apologised and explained to us that they waited as long as they could. This sent me on a tail-spin as panic set in as we had already booked onward travel. Thankfully the ladies on the staff, like the angels they are, took control of the situation and booked us on to a Pentland Ferry to Gils Bay at 11:15 from there to our original destination of Thurso in time to catch out train. Not only this but they gave us a full refund for the this leg of our journey making it easy for us to buy tickets on the Pentaland Ferry with no monetary loss to us! All in all they turned around a seemingly impossible situation, for that I am very grateful! The ferry journey itself is also staffed by lovely crew. When travelling from Scrabster to Stromness me and my friend both suffered from sea-sickness and were looked after very well. The on-board price of food is a little expensive but that is to be expected. The scenery was stunning and though the sun was watery in a cloud covered sky it only added to the mystery on the Isles. Great company based purely on the fat that the staff are fantastic!

Great room, well appointed (tea and coffee hot pot, snack to recharge you) bathroom ensuite was super clean and well appointed. i stayed two nights and had an incredible breakfast each morning !!! food was delicious and the fab host was very observant of my dietary restrictions ! (so appreciative) I had two great evening walks along the cow pasture to the dock area and absolutely thrilled with the quiet and bliss of Kirkwall. When there was a slight mixup with the room, she gave us a free bottle of wine, which was completely unnecessary! The complimentary breakfast was delicious. The breakfast room has a lovely view of the harbor. Our room looked out onto wide open fields. You felt like you were really alone in the country even though the town is about a mile away. It was beautiful and peaceful. The one downside is that the B&B is about a mile outside of town. It's walkable but takes about 25-30min. If you have a car it isn't an issue. The remoteness also contributes to the tranquility of the place. Thank you to Ardconnel for a wonderful few days in the beautiful town of Kirkwall.

We were travelling with my parents and enjoyed sitting in the sunroom both nights after a day of touring, to plan the next day out - with a lovely view of the countryside. Personally, I liked their breakfast menu system - I hadn't seen this before in a B&B, using dry erase markers we picked our breakfasts for the next morning - and the breakfasts were all delicious, we sampled the full cooked (with homemade tattie scones!! and LOVELY mushrooms), the haddock and poached egg, the salmon and scrambled egg and the poached eggs and cheese on crumpets... mmmm - would definitely stay again!

The rooms are exceptional and beautifully decorated in eclectic antiques. The whiskey collection is an envy and the chef's dinner effort was amazing. Found this little gem as we were driving across Orkney. It's easy to find, park, and has an…read moreinviting dining room with a big bay window. There were but three empty tables when we came in for lunch. The decor is part bar, part restaurant with letter stools and banquettes that are clean, and comfortable. It seems to be a spot for people who like to fish, with a few fine specimens mounted on the wall, and an art piece of tied flies (surprising delicate and beautiful; I would bite on these). The grab-a-menu-from-the-bar menu is large, and offers conventional Scottish cuisine of fish, and meat, tatties (potatoes), and salads/vegetables. You order at the bar. They tell you to give them 30 minutes to prepare each meal to order, but ours was out in 15. And it was some of the best food I've had in Orkney. All three kinds of potatoes (!) were tasty. We both had slow-roasted pork with apple sauce and it was tender and delicious, with a light gravy on top. There were also steamed vegetables, and they were as expected. Each plate cost thirteen pounds, which seemed more than reasonable for the quality. Service was minimal but just right. Loved this find. Pro tip: Kitchen closes at 2:00 pm.
