It's a surprisingly large pub, although I'm not entirely sure it's laid out in the best possible way. My boyfriend and I were seated on a table that felt a little like it was in a corridor, with wait staff and customers squeezing past us on a regular basis. The food menu is big and focuses on fresh, local produce. They also have a number of daily changing specials on top of the standard menu. I went for the beef wellington, and the boyf went for the whole gurnard, one of the specials. The gurnard was apparently delicious - the boyf leaving nothing but the bones (he even ate the eyes!!). The wellington was pretty good, and certainly large. A big chunk of fillet steak, pate and mushroom encased in light flaky pastry. Admittedly, it was easier to eat when the wait staff remembered to bring me a steak knife, unfortunately, I was three quarters of the way through by this point! Both dishes came with separate veg, a great selection but looking a little microwaved. We could only manage to share a pud - we went for the creme brûlée which was good but not exceptional. The wait staff were mainly youngsters but they were friendly and efficient. The pub also has a nice garden, can imagine it would make a great place for a pub lunch when the summer eventually arrives.

I had the lamb, well just come try for yourself, I left smiling :) One thing that needs a special mention; We have been to many pubs in and around London (where we live) every Sunday trying a new place for the books and I have to say (including my mother who is from Yorkshire) that the chef makes the best Yorkshire puddings we have EVER come across. They are just the right consistency, not too heavy or dough like, not too dry and crispy but just right...light and fluffy with enough spongy volume to almost classify and the perfect Yorkshire pudding. Lady's and Gentlemen, if Yorkie's are your thing - this is the place! The sweet potato fries are a great side, the cauliflower cheese was also very very good; almost crispy on top but with a cheesy creamy sauce underneath. The scotch egg is also worth a mention as this is a British classic and it is cooked to well here, highly recommended. Other things to note; bread and butter pudding was a big hit, so was the crumble. I had the millionaires cheese cake and although the most popular desert I found it to be a little rich and well, more chocolate than cheesecake. Not really a cheesecake texture but more a hardened chocolate based moose. One last thing, although there were a number of staff members we found the table service to be a little slow and needed improving... but surely this place, with these portions and those prices will be a hit everytime! We wanted to have a nice quiet drink and why not in such an old, historic building? You could easily feel the vibe of centuries gone past and their fire place is something else. It is massive and has huge highland coo horns adorning it. We sat in their backyard and it is quite the sun trap. I read up on their history and was actually very pleased to have visited this place. Enjoying a pint of Applewood Cider on the same spot were pirates and kings had their belly filled and their whistles wetted, makes one feel special. Recommended to all! (oh it has some ghosts too, apparently)

A little pricey if you ask me), so I went for a Tuns Burger instead (around £10). After a 10-minute wait, my food arrived and it looked delicious. The fries and onion rings were already salted which I found a little odd, the portion was a little small for my liking but overall, the burger was gorgeous and I thoroughly enjoyed my meal.
