If you are adventurous in your music searches and tastes, try taking a listen to WFMU.org 91.1 FM radio station broadcasting out of the NYC area and also worldwide internet. The amazing diversity of programming and depth of this station can catch almost anyone's ear. What is refreshing, is all the people playing the music are volunteers, who do not have to follow a corporate format. You will not hear a loop of the same songs day after day. Each 1-4 hour show has their own genre theme, but beyond that can play anything within their theme. I am always surprised by something new every time I listen. The one issue that is troubling is that their federal funds have been cut by 200k recently. Since it is a non-profit station, they rely heavily on listeners to help support the station, and especially during their funds drive this month. I really hope it can continue over the years. This is the #1 best radio station in the world! I have been listening to this station since the 80's and it's the only one that plays a very unique blend of music from pop, rock, jazz, blues to all different type of international music such as Tuvan throat music and Balinese music. They are not looking to be commercial in any way which is why I love them. It's a great way to explore new music you've never heard. There is a trick to WFMU that I am about to share with you. That trick is the schedule. Instead of treating WFMU like a radio station that can be turned on anytime for the same result, treat it like a TV station that plays very long shows. WFMU will play a lot of things that you don't enjoy. They will also play many things that you will *LOVE*. Tune into various shows and figure out which shows are your favorites and which you could do without. Their schedule is on their website, so check it out. I was going to give WFMU four stars, but Andy Breckman sounded so sincere when I heard him apologize for hurting listener's feelings tonight that any damage done by him is forgiven completely. Seven Second Delay is one of my favorite shows on WFMU. Oh, and once you fall in love with a show, you should give them lots of dollars and get a shirt from them during their fundraiser time, they could really use the money. read more

Turn it up sucka! Unless of course you've got moves like Jagger, then go jump in a lake. Anybody else out there; turn it on and turn it up. Unlike 99.99999999% of all stations out there, if you don't like what you're hearing, you can come back in 3 hours and it will be COMPLETELY different. In addition, as others have stated, if you hear something that's blowing your mind and you're out and about, make note of the time; next time you're at a computer you can not only find out exactly what you heard at that time, but hear it again. How the hell else was I supposed to know that Cre Spoda from Klaus Nomi was such an incredible song? Also, if you love 'em like I do, donate like I do. By far the best radio station in the tri-state area. There is not a bad show on the station, but you have to a pick a favorite and follow it. They treat their listeners well, and you'll always be learning about new music. Concert giveaways and actual fan interaction through their twitter and comment pages, and more live music than anyone could reasonably keep up with. I volunteer here often, and it's well worth it to help a station like this. read more

I first learned about WFMU when I heard DJs from KDVS (freeform radio in Davis, California) talking about it as "our freeform mothership". It sounded like a glowing recommendation coming from the only great radio accessible with my Radio Shack diversity antenna atop my rural Sierra a-frame. That was almost 10 years ago, so I'd say I'm a freeform end product. It's shaped me since I was a kid. I always listen to Brian Turner, Terre T., Liz B., for the awesome music, and a sampling of others...always pretty great. Tom Scharpling is my ultra-sarcastic dreamdate. Grade A fancy free-form radio. The DJ's are insightful, funny, and always exposing new artists, thus increasing musical intelligence. No matter how obscure your tastes are you will find something new. They have an amazingly DEEP digital archive, studio performances, live streaming, and I believe they made the frist mobile radio app (you never forget your frist). No matter where I go, WFMU is a constant. Come on where else are you gonna heard DJ Dog Dick, Michael Galasso, and X Ray Pop on the same station? For many years, WBER outside of Rochester was my favorite independent station, until they cut out some of the unique programming, changed their content and rotation. About five years passed and I truly believed FM was dead. I stopped using the radio completely, I just was so unhappy, my dial was filled with countless Clear Channel clones, there was nothing left... That is, until I moved to NYC. I was in a U-Haul, stuck in traffic on the BQE, my iPod FM transmitter was dead so I started to mess around with the radio. I pulled in WFMU and I was immediately hooked. From that day forward, I parked my needle at 91.1 on my tuner and that's the only station I'll listen to. What makes WFMU so good? It's so weird! No other station inspires me to explore new music like 'FMU does. Sure, all my friends use Pandora and Grooveshark, but none of those sites will open your mind like WFMU can. The programming here is all over the map, with specialized shows for just about every genre out there. My personal favorite is the Antique Phonograph Music Program on Tuesdays starting at 8pm. Diane's Kamikaze Fun Machine is also a personal favorite of mine. There is really no comparison, WFMU is the best. Didn't catch the name of that track? Missed your favorite show? All of the shows are archived online and playlists are available as well! WFMU also hosts a large record sale/swap once a year, which is great for crate diggers. Having a full-tilt bonafide awesome radio station in your backyard is amazing. My friends and I grew up listening to WFMU and we've come to know and love them for their wacky programming, indie spotlights, and fun loyalty to the community. Now with the newfangled Internets, WFMU has become a global phenom! And with good reason. Their phone and iPad apps are very well programmed. WFMU does the best job of letting you know what you're listening to, and they host all their archives online. Its such a great resource. WFMU has saved me countless times, whether stuck in traffic on the NJ Turnpike, or stuck on a writing assignment and needing a little inspiration. I've collected a few tshirts from past fundraiser drives, as well as special DJ promo giveaways which are always collectible and fun. Well, I can be a bit biased, but i have to say that i love adore and can't live without WFMU! Granted, I volunteer here and am one of the DJ's, so that is why i am biased, but before I became all this I was an avid listener. I went to all their record fairs (both spring and fall) and donated during their marathons. The shows are great. It's the only place where you can listen to new music and not your average stuff either. And if you don't like what you hear, just come back in a couple hours or wait a little bit because it will change. As a DJ there, I have to say that the listeners are top notch. I have listeners all over the world and they edge me on to do what I do. They really are the driving force behind my show and make me excited to do what I do. They understand what my show is about and the requests I get from them are spot on. All in all, everyone should be listening to the station. No If's, And's or But's. With being able to listen via the internet and now they have a new IPhone application to listen on the go, you have no excuse to not be listening! The real deal. Most stations only play things they already know will sell lots and lots and lots of copies. I love that WFMU approaches the process from the other side - "What is this? Kooky. Heck, let's give it a spin. Someone will dig it." I agree with the need to pick a show or two or twenty and follow it (them). The advantage of a format like this is musical diversity. It's great if your ears are tired of Top 40 cookie cutter stuff. The disadvantage is that they really do play everything, including stuff you may dislike. It's not the kind of station you put on as background music during your Memorial Day party with relatives you only see twice a year. It's the kind of radio station you can learn a great deal about music from and find some new artists there is no way on earth you would have found otherwise. read more

The only good music radio station I've ever heard. They play a lot of WEIRD music, but in every set, there are at least a couple songs I already love or will soon love. Not for everybody, but you will definitely hear something new here. ALSO, they have a website with live stream, as well as great archives. You can find past shows with track listings - a great resource! I started listening to them online in Florida back in high school. This is the greatest thing ever. If I had a penny for every time I listened to WFMU I'd have a shit load of pennies. And then I'd donate all those pennies right back to WFMU. Oh God, it's some weird Ouroboros/"Groundhog Day" situation now! I should really give it a lower rating though because, honestly, most people don't like to hear you pontificate about your favorite radio station for hours. I used to listen to WFMU in the late 60's-early 70's when they were at Upsala College in East Orange. Vince Scelsa & other DJ's would play an assortment of very, very trippy stuff, & use echoplex on their voices on Saturday nights because they knew most of us were wicked toasted...It's great to hear them online. read more
