It has a bigger, better and more attractively displayed selection than any other shop. Also, this store is really great for book-buying and browsing. They always have money-saving special deals on offer. Their friendly and very helpful staff really know their stuff and make excellent recommendations. Author Philip Pullman supports independent bookshops and has presented this branch of BB/SS with a signed Oxford Literary Festival photograph of himself with the message, `best wishes to British Bookshops and Sussex Stationers`. On a recent visit into Southampton I was looking for the latest rew release from James Patterson and popped into Sussex Stationers in the precinct after looking in Waterstones and Borders. True to form, SS had it cheaper than both of them. The only other place to get books as cheap as this in my opinion are the supermarkets but they don't often have them in so quickly. While I was browsing an assistant offered an opinion on a book I was looking at (Twilight) and recommended this so I purchased it along with my James Patterson one. After reading it and realising she was indeed correct and it was a really good read I went straight back, thanked her and bought the following 3 sequels. I'm always really impressed with the service in SS/BB and this is usually my first port of call when looking for a new book.

Now in the midst of a shopping public it has the attention of more people. I received excellent service and attention yesterday when I went to post an item. The Post Office is well signed, and is right at the end of Sussex Stationers. It is a bit of plod to the end of the shop...! There is access to self posting of parcels on the left as you approach the main counters, and there are quite a few spaces to complete your business.

There's very few actual books (if you want that, go across the street to Waterstone's), but the shop does sell a good mix of gifts (especially around Christmas), chocolate, games, DVDs and magazines. There's sadly not a huge manga/comic section, and the few that they do have they shove in with the young kids' magazines, which is a bit inappropriate as some of them e.g. the not-quite-for-kids Deadpool do not exactly mesh well with Barbie or Disney-related kiddie mags. The staff here are really friendly and helpful, and they try to keep the queues under control on busy days. The only pain is their shopping bags - literally a pain - they're made of that kind of material that cuts through your hands after holding them too long!

This one is inside the West Quay on the lower floor with an entrance inside and another that lets out onto the Esplanade by the outside facing restaurants. Upstairs has fiction, new releases, and other general interest categories while the downstairs has genre fiction, YA and children's, arts, and so on plus the cafe. Service is always friendly and usually there is no wait.

I live relatively close to this newsagents but rarely use it. The staff, in the main, seem to be…read morerather abrupt in their manner and most of their products are over priced. Their cigarettes are more expensive than the co-op only a few doors down. If you wish to pay by debit card there is a 0.50p fee unless you spend more than £10 - though included in this price cannot be alcohol, lotter tickets or cigarettes. They have some bakery items which are freshly made - unfortunately they do not taste very moist and fresh! On the positive side!! - they stay open until 10.30pm which is later than the other surroundng shops, they also do sell a large, varied amount of essential products like milk, bread and eggs. The sald/veg is normally just about on its sell by date but on the whole looks withered and tired. This is situated with a few other shops and most times of the day you can park off road very near.

As richardn says, go during the weekdays when most kids are at school because during weekends its pure hell walking around the civic centre and in stores like HMV where problematic youth just cause trouble and annoyance. Overall the choice of film, music, and games is excellent, but there is one thing that HMV have lacked recently and thats their range of singles. Was in the store only a week ago looking for birthday presents, and i searched the entire store, and the only single that they had in the whole of HMV was the new single from the winner of XFactor. Was very disappointed in that, but otherwise happy with the store.
