I stopped by Whisler's for a business meeting, of all things. I found the bar to be rustic, fun and funky with a very cool vibe. No attitude. I loved this placed. Prices seemed very reasonable (compared to California). We were there for happy hour so I ordered a Floradora, a cocktail of gin, raspberry, lime and ginger ale. It was delicious and a good balance of sweet, sour and fruity. Their cocktails are artisanal but not overly complicated or fussy. One colleague had an old fashioned and another also had the Floradora. I would absolutely love to return for the live music. This spot would be great for a date or for a group outing. We sat at the bar and the bartender was great! read more

This place has really great drinks and super cool atmosphere. It was my first time visiting, and my friends hyped it to be a really great place so I was expecting a lot out of it. It was a Saturday afternoon so I understand the bartenders are going to be busy, but I didn't feel very welcome when I walked inside the bar. The bouncer that was checking ID's was SUPER nice and even called my by my name when he checked my ID. Very cool vibe and love the atmosphere. Visited Whisler's on a hot Sunday afternoon. A cool space, but I was not into the summer cocktail menu. Quality: Tried a few cocktails at Whisler's, the Whisler's Old Fashioned, Through The Mist, El Santo, and Fire And Ice. Whisler's Old Fashioned was served in a glass flask, I believe to let the flavors sink in. It was solid, but as usual with the drink very sweet. Through The Mist was vodka-based with grapefruit and coconut cream. I did not love the combo, but my girlfriend did. The two other drinks I tried were mezcal-based, El Santo had lime and raspberry, while Fire And Ice came with vermouth and peach. Neither really hit the spot. This was definitely a summer inspired menu, but the light drinks and sweetness were not working for me. Quantity: All the drinks we had were alcohol forward and fair pours. Value: $11 to $14 for Speciality Cocktails. Ambiance: Whisler's is located east of Downtown Austin. From the outside it looks like a hole in the wall dive, but it has a very unique feel inside. Antique touches, old paintings, hanging chandelier, and everything unfinished, give it an old, but cool vibe. Expect rusty chairs and tables, and a feeling that everything is dirty, even though nothing is. They also have a patio area, but it was unusable on a hot summer afternoon. Crowd: A small crowd on Sunday afternoon. Service: The bartenders were passing out sample cocktails for guests to try. A great way to hook people in with the right drink. Located on East 6th. Whisler's had a chunk of sections to hang out to choose from. The main bar inside is a little tight but if you can nab a table it's a good place to be. Pretty crowded for a Saturday night so patience is the key when ordering drinks. My friend raved about the frozen drinks here but they weren't available since it was a little cooler that night. Tonight I met a friend at Whisler and we had a couple of beverages. As we were chatting, I grabbed my card, put it in my purse and continued conversing. Apparently that purse I put my card in? Time for a review update! Whisler's is one of my favorite bars and totally as good as it gets anywhere! If I am downtown I usually always end up here somehow. The drinks are amazing! The menu does change out from time to time and the bartenders are always coming up with new inventive creations. I also love that they have one of my favorite food trailers in the whole town on their patio and luckily their cocktails pair perfectly with Thai food! Gadzooks! Do you ever go to a bar and flip open the drink menu and feel like you've had every drink there is to have and nothing is going to really impress you anymore? I usually feel like that, which is one of the reasons I opt for the tried-and-true, refreshing and cheap vodka soda. A quick perusal of the classy-looking Whisler's menu had me doing multiple double takes and a few "hmm, I dunno about that"s, which meant that our drinking experience there was either going to be awesome or awful. DUDES... it was awesome. I had some sorta ruby fizz thing that was fruity but not overly sweet, fresh, and generally bursting with flavor. I didn't want it to end. I briefly considered booking a room nearby so I could drink 37 more without worrying about a pesky D-Dubya. That drink was a safe bet choice (but I'd order it again and again), but I also tried a couple sips of Lawn Mower Man and another whisky one whose name I can't recall. Both were not drinks I would have chosen because they had ingredients like "bitters" "spicy jam" and "whisky", but lawwwd were they tasty. I think I'd trust the bartenders to make me almost anything here. Super cool space -- big, open converted garage with a huge bar and tables/picnic tables on the patio. Staff is friendly and the bartenders are true "mixologists". Perfect east side location. I'm in love. read more

Love the Ambiance of this place. It has a gorgeous and funky interior and their cocktails are some of the best in town in my opinion. The bartenders are very cool and give great opinions on selecting the right drink. Their old fashioned is by far my favorite. Ask for it not too sweet, that's how I like them ;) There is indoor and outdoor covered seating. I prefer inside under the beautiful chandelier that hangs over the bar. There are also dominoes, cards, and some other games you can ask the bartender for to play while you drink! After a few cocktails hit up the food truck that is attached to the bar. Whisler's is definitely my new favorite bar in town. Came by with Amy D recently. The night we went a few nights ago (they are still doing soft opening meaning they are still working on things) I got to meet Scranton who is the visionary behind Whisler's (and other Rainey Street gems like Lustre Pearl and Bar Illegal). The transformation that Scranton's team did to this old Rabbit's bar is pretty remarkable. Basically the entire inside was low hanging ceilings, faded beer markings and boarded up windows. In a short period of time his crews came in and completely gutted the ugly ducking of Rabbit's and what a beauty they transformed it into! Tall wooden ceilings (they refurbished the wood from Rabbit's), plenty of open windows and beautiful chandelier lighting with soft candlelight glow is what has replaced a dank, dark building. Ladies will definitely love this place. The most gorgeous part is the inside. One of the appeals of Whisler's is the ample seating. You can sit inside at the beautiful bar, back in the dark corner area near a decorated alter, or you have plenty of outside seating options from an open air patio to full blown outdoor seating. Note: bathrooms are outside, attached to the side of the building. Scranton is working on figuring out the right food trailer to come in and pair with his cocktails so that is still TBD. For now you can enjoy refreshing cocktail beverage choices that cost anywhere from $8-$11 depending on the drink. They have several white wine options and one red. There is also beer (tap and bottle) and the bar is a full bar. Another bonus is parking! I'm sure in the late nights the parking will fill up but currently they have around 15-20 spots to park in along the fence line of the patio area which is great. I'm looking forward to seeing how Whisler's evolves over time. I think it will be great. read more

Ohh I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet! My wife and I have had the pleasure of visiting this beautiful bar on three occasions now. I have yet to be disappointed. They have what is still my favorite old fashioned in town. The space is stunning and as the sun goes down, the ambiance is as good as it gets. Snag yourself a seat at the bar if you want to guarantee faster service. The only issue is that service can get backed up until they activate the second bar. Cocktails of the quality they produce take some time to craft. The only way to improve this bar would be to have a small area to the side (even a booth set up in the courtyard) slinging strictly beer. No need to distract the talented bartenders from making masterful cocktails with asking them to pop open a cold one. read more

Whisler's is my all-time favorite "backyard bar" on the east side. It's hip and hoppin' but with a laid-back and cozy vibe to it. Usually at a food/drink establishment, I prefer to sit indoors when given a choice because of Texas' moody weather. However, Whisler's is one of the few places where I love, love, love their outdoor patio. The outdoor seating area is spacious with many nooks and crannies to choose from, there's cute strung lights, and lots of good energy. Other awesome things: +Super dog-friendly; our dog always has a great time here +They have very decently-priced drinks during happy hour +The food truck in the backyard is ESK Thai Kun...one of the best food trucks in town +Good for large groups and/or a chill date night Pro-tip: Leave work a bit early and get here around 4:00 or 4:30 PM to get your pick of parking and seating. What a great find! One of my friends performs here on Wednesday nights, so I decided to show him some support and stop by for a bit. I parked easily nearby and made my way in. Great big yard with lots of seating. Dark interior with pleasant bartenders who made fun champagne cocktails for an all-night happy hour event while the band played (Wednesday nights!). They were all delicious, and they were only $6. I believe I had an "Autumn Sweater" and a "Don't Be So Bitter." A friend had a French 75 and said it was top notch. I had to leave for a bit, but I enjoyed it so much that I went back there after a Yelp event and brought 10 people with me to share in the cocktails and live music. To me, Whisler's is kind of like Lustre Pearl's classy cousin on the east side. I'll definitely be going back. Note: Dumpling Happiness is in the back. As many others have stated, Whisler's is definitely one of my all-time favorite Austin bars. The inside decor and interior are beautiful in and of themselves. The restoration and the tiny details make it a special place. The outdoor patio is huge and great for people watching. They make a great Old Fashioned and you can get it on Happy Hour everyday for $6 (I think?). All the cocktails are high quality and hand-made; you usually can't go wrong with anything on their menu. Don't like cocktails.... head to the Mezcal Tasting Room upstairs. Green means go! Hungry? Don't stress... East Side King and usually another food truck will be operating to fill your stomach with goodness while you down delicious, potent cocktails! I've been to this bar a couple of times over the past 3 years, and each experience has me wishing I stayed longer. Prices are average for the area, service is the same I've experienced other places around. What sets Whislers apart in my opinion is their drinks and the ambiance. The best Old Fashioned I have ever had (I travel for work....I've had a lot of them...) came from Whislers. I LOVE the amount of space they have, whether it be at the bar and the area around it, the outdoor seating for larger groups, or the MEZCAL BAR up top....yes, a dedicated Mezcal Bar. It alone warrants multiple visits, if you can score your way in there. Every time I'm in Austin I go to Whislers. And every time you're in Austin you should too. It exemplifies the city, the East side, and the craft of beautiful cocktails. I'll be back soon. read more

This place has quickly shot up to one of the top bars I'd head back to downtown. (or rather, super east side....is that really downtown now!?! I think it is. I feel old.) The happy hour menu is where it's at. They even had it on Sunday. 4-7 pm every damn day. I had 2 deliciously fancy cocktails that just made me flutter with delight. Maybe it's because they were cute and purple and yummy and sometimes you just need a cute-ass drink. Aviation was the purple one. If you like gin cocktails, you'll like this one. Perfectly made. The Moscow Mule was as good as I'd expect, but not as fun as the cute purple one. Now, I know there are plenty of awesome cocktail bars in Austin, but I think what sets Whisler's apart is the space and atmosphere. The building is historic and the bar inside takes advantage of this, really highlighting the building. They have an outside bar and plenty of patio space (very important) to enjoy your cocktails. Thai-Kun is also on their property and you are so far east you can actually park. That all adds up to 5 stars to me. Check it out on a Sunday afternoon and you'll be happy you did. read more

This place is definitely cool. I love the atmosphere and the design of the bar. My friends and I came her after work for happy hour. We thought it was champagne/bubbly night. The owner told us that the website hadn't been updated which was a little disappointing but we still ordered drinks from the regular happy hour menu and had a good time. Big plus is the east side kings food truck on the side. Definitely love happy hours that you can easily order some food. The drinks however were very bad, do not go here with high expectations on their cocktails. One of my favorite happy hour spots in Austin! Whisler's offers an array of craft cocktails and beer. My favorite is 'down the rabbit hole'! A carrot juice based martini. Very unique and stiff like a good martini should be. Don't be fooled, they go down smoothly, but will sneak up on you. My boyfriend loves their old fashion. Also, it's one of the best in Austin. Sometimes I take a trip down memory lane with a needed box of tissues on my lap. I pull, wipe, and crumple, and toss them to my feet; the nostalgia is biting. I feel a bruise forming on my neck and wonder the cause. I hum a tune, When in Rome's The Promise, and think of Whisler's, the many nights Antoine and I sit smoking, collecting stars in the patio and placing them in our pockets, understanding that together we make a great team, and that together we'd drink Manhattans, nocturnal, debonair, always painterly and artistically daring. The Whisler's bartenders make good drinks. Damnly talented men, we are. Antoine's coif perhaps more impressive than the stroke of his genius hands. Though larger and more forceful than mine... he claims I possess a trait that perfectly counters his. I possess deftness and exactitude. I tell him, a great duo is always yin and yang. He knows I like dressing so he wears a lapelled jacket. He's tall and bronze. Has grey eyes, sleeves of tattoos. We discuss our upcoming gallery show while drinking at Whisler's. We discuss ways our work can work off of each other. But it's a boring discussion. So, we reminisce about Vegas, that time with the movie stars and the slots. The day drugs. That loud life so different than our current lives at Whistler's, which is tame. We eat chicken sandwiches here with the IPA crowd. I call them the IPA crowd because in Austin, IPAs are all the softer, mustachioed men drink. "Can I get an IPA?" they say in their denim. One girl in mom jeans here last week told me that Seinfeld and Friends was offensive, problematic, and antiquated, and I asked her what her favorite kind of beer was, and she said she loves IPAs. I smiled. I walked to my car, whistling. I tell Antoine the story. He says that we need an old Corvette to pull up to the gallery in. I say we need horses. He says matching sunglasses. I say horses. We wonder about old cowboy Austin. We love current Austin but miss Los Angeles. We are hovering above the masses in a chopper speculating. We see tumbleweed and rivers flowing wildly with very hoppy beer. We sip our Manhattans late into the night with a great admiration for this bar. They did something very right here, we agree. The stonework. The tumbleweed and the food truck. The maraschino cherries. Why go to the moon when we can collect stars in our pockets? We sing to the moon at Whislers. read more
