Slim's is a pretty typical roadside fruit and vegetable market. More than a stand, less than a store. What you find, of course, depends on the time of year. This stop we enjoyed some Iowa grown tomatoes and Iowa baked Kringla. They also round out their offerings with some less than local produce, such as Georgia peaches. They also have a variety of, mostly local, jams and the like. It's not necessarily the cheapest place to shop, but quality is consistently good. It's located west of downtown Story City at the intersection with Highway 69. It's a two minute drive. If you're in town for the carousel, the Scandinavian thing... try Hwy 69 rather than I-35 for a change and enjoy some fruit and veggies.

At the time that we went, there were only two variety of apples that were ready for picking. I ended up picking only the one I ate later because I figured I wouldn't be able to pack them in my suitcase, but they've got loads of stuff inside their cute cabin-like shop. I ended up buying a jar of apple butter that I took back home and put on practically everything! Because it was so hot the day we came, we bought some apple cider slushes, really cheap, and delicious! It made walking across the apple groves much more enjoyable. There's lots of shady areas where you can sit down and enjoy your beverage, or just hang out. This farm would be a fun time for the entire family as well.

The orchard is huge, with plenty of room to roam and apple tree varieties to choose from, mostly honey crisp, but also crimson crisp, Jonagold, fuji, and gala. Admission is $5 per person and we paid $22 for a two-person you-pick peck. Which was more than enough for us! Cons: Parking was an issue (it was a weekend) with unclear traffic flow through the lot...and it became progressively more busy later in the day.

I made my apple turnover ala mode, which was worthwhile, and savored it outside overlooking the orchard. So picturesque! After my apple treat, I was ready to pick and made my way to the orchard. Expect some hill climbing and pretty scenery between the apple trees and flower fields. I imagine the trek could be more challenging for families with young ones. Wilson's boasts 100 varieties of apples, one of the reasons I visited the orchard in the first place. At the end of September, I filled my bags with two varieties I had never heard of, which was fun. The rows were well-marked with the apples that were ready for picking as well as the name of the variety. More importantly, the apples were delicious. Overall, I'm very happy I spent a morning here, and I imagine just about anyone else will feel similarly.
