The room we had (upper front with a nice balcony) was fantastic and had a wonderful view of the sea. We enjoyed going for a walk around the grounds too....it's a small working farm with many animals and beautiful landscaping. The host was exceptionally friendly and accomodating! We were very pleasantly surprised too to get a menu with several great choices for breakfast. Most B&B's have a very limited breakfast but this location offered many nice choices and it was all delicious! If we are ever back in this area, it will certainly be the place we stay again....and hopefully for longer next time!

Sweet! This place is a restaurant/bar along with having multiple chalets for rent; whilst you can access it from the main road there is also a public jetty which you can use to pull up along side. To find the jetty from the lake you have to really know the area and what gem lies beneath... There's no signage, just a keen eye. Arriving on shore, there are a few chalets facing the shoreline, they look great! Tucked behind a few chalets, you have the restaurant! Asked for a table for 4, with a 30-45 minute wait, there is a small bar area which wasn't busy so we huddled up there and after a day on the lake, a well deserved drink was in order. Staff were very friendly and no sooner were we given a table :-) Everyone was raving about the half crispy duck so we surely ordered that, with me, I opted for the steak... The food was excellent, portioned to feed an army although after our active day, we made a sterling effort with everything. To start I had the French onion soup, was delicious. Next up was the steak, which I was not prepared for... The menu just says steak small or large, I said large thinking hey, 10oz maybe... Oh no, what felt like 100oz was served up with onions mushrooms along with garlic butter. Feast like I've never had before, protein sweats of the good kind ensued!

Can't remember the name of the guy who manned the front post, but he should be working at the Four Seasons he was so professional and courteous. The breakfast buffet offered a vast assortment of options including a full Irish breakfast. My only suggestion would be add a bit of ambiance with background music in the restaurant. Also the workout room was well equipped but the blaring music put me off, we took an early morning walk along the river instead (there is a footpath along the river on the side opposite the hotel). The location is perfect, on the banks of the River Shannon in the center of Athlone. Historic sites, restaurants and bars are an easy walk.

The venue was very well appointed with great roaring fires - our evening meal was fantastic (beef fillet was melt-in-your-mouth). Only downside was the wedding coordinator who had a power trip ringing the dinner bell with an over-aggressive right hand throughout the day. We are there to attend a wedding, not to be herded like cattle! A fork against a champagne flute works just as well.

Recently stayed overnight at Cooney's Hotel, on the main street in Ballymahon, Co Longford - along…read morewith a group of about 15 other hardy walkers who were on the last stint of walking the Royal Canal from Dublin to Clondara Co Longford! We were all more than happy with the reception we got in Cooney's and what a deal - €55 per person for B & B and dinner. The rooms were amazingly large, well furnished, including a double plus a single bed in each room, sparkling white bed linen, TV, free wifi, the works! Really warm and cosy, but would only deduct points for waste of energy as the heating was left on all night and we couldn't turn off the radiator so had to leave a window open - when we reported this to reception the reply was that the 'weather was too cold to turn off the heating'! After a 19 km walk, a lovely warm soothing bath, we all enjoyed a wonderful old-fashioned Irish type dinner in the dining room (we were the only people dining that Monday night - although there appeared to be quite a few eating in the bar) - plenty on each course to choose from the owner/manager even gave us wine at a special price of €15 per bottle so who could argue with that! Breakfast the next morning had to be seen to be believed for a hotel that you would probably pass by it is so ordinary looking in the heart of the country!!.....what a choice and again several courses, ranging from a whole array of cereals, yogurts, porridge served with honey, cinnamon and cream, full and mini cooked breakfast, different types of eggs - I choose scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and did not expect to get such a huge separate serving of smoked salmon - but it did set me up for the day and the 14 km walk along the Royal Canal to our finishing spot where the Canal meets the Shannon at Clondara. If you are on your way to the West of Ireland and feel like a Midlands stop over or better again, spend a few days walking the Royal Canal around that area - drop into Cooneys and treat yourself to B & B and the evening meal!
