Like the Chicago Museum of Natural History, Lincoln Home in Springfield, Town of Bodie in California, and the likes. For someone new to museums, this may be a good place to get started and get immersed in history. I was looking forward to the ww2 airplane displayed when you google the museum but it was not there the time I visited. Lots of the pieces are relatively new, maybe 70's, 80's. I just finished binge watching 6 seasons of Downton Abbey so I was feeling nostalgic. I appreciated the early 20th century automobile on display. They have some of the early cameras, cash registers. It looks more extensive online than it actually is. What I appreciated the most is the memorial of fallen Canadian soldiers during ww1. I still encourage people to see this to catch a glimpse of the old Surrey and it's free!

Lots of hands on activities and just well done. It is huge! Takes you through the entire canning process. We happened upon it when it was free admission. After going through it, it was worth paying for. Just a terrific job of keeping the integrity and honoring the people who worked there. There's a gift shop and tons of super friendly people working there. There are guided talks and activities as well. Just a fun time. Great way to spend a couple of hours. Bathrooms on site and well maintained throughout.

The "Haunted Sea" is a recent exhibit show case now at the Cannery until Nov 2. It is a perfect…read moreblend of Halloween fun and environmental awareness. The glowing jellyfish, ghostly sea creatures, and spooky underwater lights give off a playful Halloween vibe. The exhibit reminds us that our oceans are truly "haunted" -- not by spirits, but by pollution and garbage. The displays made from recycled materials show just how much waste ends up in the sea, and it's a great way to make both kids and adults think about how we can all help bring the ocean back to health. There is also a big LEGO model of the Cannery. Worth to check it out! I always find the temperature inside the cannery is cold especially in the winter time. So be sure to have a warm jacket with you.

This is an eight acre area right by the water that is the original location of early canning,…read morefishing, and boat building that fueled commerce in the area. The area is accessible as you stroll down a level wooden boardwalk with offshoots to the Shipyard building, Murakami house, Chinese bunkhouse, and other homes that served to house the European, Japanese, Chinese and Indigenous workers who gathered here. Be sure to check out Murakami Boatworks building, as there are boatbuilding programs and maritime demonstrations. There are a host of informational signs, and as I came here right after my visit to the Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site, I felt like I had a broader understanding of the history of the area. If you're not into history, you can check out the waterfowl that congregate on the banks of the river.

In the southwest corner of Steveston Community Park, there's a large firehouse-looking garage…read morebuilding, in which you can find a museum containing a restored tram car, from the days when such things operated regularly, ferrying passengers all the way into Vancouver, many kilometers to the north. I'm not sure if admission is free all year round, or if we just happened to be lucky, but we quickly pounced on the opportunity to check it out. For the young ones, repeat visits to this museum can net you junior conductor pins or badges, based on how many times you've been here, which is a cute little perk for them. Our young toddler son loved exploring the car, running up and down, and poking about everywhere he could (including places he probably wasn't supposed to), but the staff were friendly and good-natured about it. There's plenty of historical information about the tram, and its use in the region, on various plaques and displays throughout the building, for those who are interested. If nothing else, the simple fact that they preserved this icon piece of local history, and tend to it with such care and devotion, is charming enough in itself.

The forms of information (videos, boards, infographics, etc.) are very engaging and true to the period. I was very impressed with how the museum has been maintained. Despite being small, there are many things to do, especially for children. There are conductor costumes for both adults and children for photo ops. The tram and its interior were stunning and it's a replica made specifically for the museum! In all, my visit was about 40 minutes. We spent a lot of time talking to Cathy and I do highly recommend that with whatever staff is there. There's nothing better than to talk to a local about history.

Pioneer Park is the perfect combination of a beautiful outdoor park plus the chance to take in some…read morelocal history. When you first enter the park you're greeted by a row of hand-built, historical buildings made by Whatcom County's earliest settlers and relocated to (what would eventually become) Pioneer Park. If you go on a day that some of the houses are open, for a small donation you can take a tour hosted by volunteers who know pretty much everything about the history of Ferndale and the county! The tour houses are set up with relics from the past - it's so interesting to see how the early settlers lived. Past the houses are open spaces where concerts are held, and the iconic barn which is the home of weddings, dances, and beer gardens throughout the summer. It's always fun to attend one of Pioneer Park's signature events, the Old Settlers Festival, where you are greeted with a ribbon denoting how long you've lived in these here parts, and then you get to enjoy the various vendors (and of course food!) before embarking to the barn where you will pretty much run into everyone you've ever known! Pioneer Park is also home to the beautiful and amazing Star Park, a children's playground build entirely by community volunteers. So now there are fun things for the little ones to do here, too!
