I enrolled my 7 yr old daughter here in hopes primarily to emulate my experience with a martial arts at the same time of my life. I did 2 years of Judo, and that seemed to help me focus a little more on what mattered. In college, I got back into it with Shotokan style karate for 2.5 years. I do not think the style of martial arts particularly matters much when you start out. What matters is that you follow a set of principles, are able to listen, coordinate yourself amongst your peers, and perhaps get something out of the time in school. I've read all of the previous comments. I agree some of the sentiments, but I can also see counter arguments. This school isn't worth the $160/monthly tuition if you are not participating in each of the three offered classes. Attendance and participation is key. The 30 minute lesson plan is optimal for little kids - and yes, out of the 30 minutes maybe 10-15 minutes is actually focused on what is learning the forms, kicks or "martial arts" material which helps you advance. The rest is broken into formalities, drills, meditation which are also helpful in developing mindfulness, respect and wellness. As your child ranks, concentration increases, and the lesson should also increase to 1 hr long. It will become necessary to attend additional classes to continue to advance, and even private lessons if you are interested in the advanced belts beyond brown - which is at least a 5 year commitment. Unfortunately if you transfer in from another martial arts program, you do not get credit for previous rank, and must start all over, albeit, you should theoretically advance much quicker because for example blocks and knife hands are essentially the same between karate and taekwondo. The differences are subtle. Except of course if Grand Master Seo knows or acknowledges the rank from the former school. I agree with the comment that English is not a primary language so Grand Master and his wife, who own the school, aren't particularly chatty. And if you have a question, it's probably best to address it with one of his pupil-instructors - and if they do not know - they can hunt it down for you. This school is close by which was the primary reason we joined. Apparently one of the pupils made it into the Olympics, but I still do not know who. I felt that the free introductory class was good, but the private lesson showing how your child could break a thin board was a little cheesy, especially because Ms Anna, a black belt, broke a popper for a special sound effect which she tried to hide but the smell of sulphur was present, and the replay of the video showed her throwing the popper chaff on the ground, that left me feeling a bit like, oh boy this place tries to emphasize more "show". This goes back to the fundamentals of the program: are you going to learn the martial art ? Is this program going to help you in a street fight ? Sometimes, perception is the best deterrent. Is your kid going to make a stand of show ? Some may some may not. However, if you need to back it up with reality, then perhaps this school does not provide all the necessary skills immediately. In time yes, but in the immediate future no. This "showmanship" is not necessary, but certainly all about salesmanship. Despite knowing about his sales tactics, I chose to enroll my daughter. I still believe that the exposure to martial arts - the highly structured learning: forms, the kicks, respect, discipline, honoring tenants and others - maybe it will help her to understand how vulnerable we as humans are, and to help protect that some day. I agree that the contracts that you sign here require advanced notice to get out of. If you plan to leave, and want to discontinue, you must plan and communicate with Grand Master and his wife, the date of your departure, as early as possible. They can seem oppressive if you are not a planner. I think if you aren't interested in learning about Eastern philosophy / martial arts and just want self defense mitigation, there are private instructors from military or police who give those sorts of classes. Excellent instructing character building, diligence, dignity and respect. The Grandmaster, Thomas, is an excellent role model for the youth. Personally, I've learned and still constantly learn new perspectives and rational, logic, critical thinking on life being in his presence. Truly one of a kind human, and I hope everyone can take notes like I have from his ability to lead, and connect people together through different interests and relate to anyone. read more

My 2 kids 7 and 4 YO have been taking these classes for 1 month, after 1 month we decided to leave but will probably be assisting for another 2 month because the contract makes us pay for 2 month when we decide to leave. In a nutshell - the gym is about money making not about teaching. Good things: 1) spacious gym with all the necessary equipment 2) nice kids kimonos What we didn't like 1) Very poor training approach, out of 30 min training - actually training is probably 5-10 minutes, there rest is talking, screaming, turning own the music, meditating. The headmaster loves to mention that they are Koreans and only Koreans can teach taekwondo - don't buy that. Your kid will neither learn taekwondo nor get their body in shape. 2) every lesson there is a different teacher - some of them are kids 10-12 years old kids - with corresponding skill level and teaching experience. Some teachers were good but the majority is absolutely unqualified. The headmaster tries to teach sometimes - it looks awful as his English is very bad which is kinda important for teaching 3) we paid for the whole month of November but for some reason the gym took the whole thanksgiving week off not only thur-sun. Actually they didn't take the week off - they were making money this week offering 3-day camp for 100+ dollars. So instead of having regular classes they just sent everyone off and offered to pay for the camp 4) IMPORTANT - read your contract. When I told them we don't want to assist the practices anymore, they charged us additional 400 dollar subscription fee for early + the discount they gave us for the second child + we have to pay for another 2 months - until end of January. I asked them to agree on one month since there is no point, as the kids and the parents don't like it. They refused. The gym is completely about money-making not about martial arts and developing kids. read more

The owner kicked my son out of his class for not having his uniform. My son had been going to lessons for many months. I knew the uniform was not Available, but I brought him thinking I could buy a new one or at the least borrow one. The owner demanded we leave. So nasty! My son loved his lessons and we were all very surprised. The owner was incredibly rude and found it entertaining that he made us leave. Very disappointing. My son is 5 yo. read more

This place is now called White Tiger Martial Arts. I am speaking solely for the one time we went to try out this place. But what else does it take really if I'm never going back! This place is now called White Tiger Martial I was looking for a new martial arts place for my girls. They come from almost 2 years of doing Yoshukai Karate which is not available to us in Marietta, so we decided to give this place a try. We set up an appointment for my girls to try out a class on Saturday morning. We showed up and all the kids were neatly lined up in a rope. They were working on the katas and so far, so good. But it seemed REALLY strict! The girls joined in but very very soon after they hauled them to a back room and called us in which I thought was beyond strange. The instructor who did not speak very good English (an issue when you are trying to teach kids) was asking them to do certain movements and katas but we were completely separated from the class that we were supposed to be trying. Even though we explained our girls had been in martial arts for almost two years this clearly didn't sink in when he wanted my daughters to get excited about breaking a very thing board. At this point my daughters have done this regularly with thicker boards. I tried to chuck it up to misunderstanding but when we were done watching this "display" that was arranged for us and my daughters feeling patronized and upset, we were escorted to talk to the owner who also doesn't speak English well. We had a hard time understanding him and we still did not go back to the group class! He insisted that we needed to sign them up for a year and he wanted us to sign right then and there because we could only have the offer that day. We asked him about cancellation policy if the girls did not like it and he was not clear on it but if all felt very very suspicious. He kept pressing and pushing and finally I just said NO THANK YOU and walked out. I told the story to a dear friend who told me that they actually do automatic renewal so 1) you can't cancel once you are in 2) IF you don't let them know right before the contract is over they automatically renews! read more

White Tiger Martial Arts (formally known as Moohan Martial Arts) provides quality martial arts classes for both children and adults. The classes teach a variety of techniques in Taekwondo, Hapkido, sword fighting (kumdo), and Kickboxing. Class sizes are extremely small (2-3 instructors for a class of 6 children), unlike other martial arts schools in the area. Students are also introduced to some aspects of Korean culture (respecting elders and simple Korean phrases). After the first class, my 5 year old came home knowing how to say "Hello", "Thank you", "Mommy", "Daddy" etc. I love how the older children get to become mentors to promote leadership skills, after they reach a certain level of mastery in Taekwondo! Not only does that benefit the "leader" child, but it is a great system that motivates the younger ones to focus harder and excel in class. Most of all, my 5 year olds confidence and attention span has increased tremendously after attending class here. Classes here a tad pricier compared to other dojos, but it is all worth the money. My daughter has been coming to White Tiger Martial Arts for over 3 years now (from Kindergarten to 3rd Grade) and our overall experiences has been fantastic. Before coming to White Tiger I visited many martial arts schools in the East Cobb area and I found that this school offered a more authentic instruction style,  active student and  family participation, and a true family atmosphere.   I have read reviews from others about past "bad experience" but I have found that many of those experience may have been due to cultural differences that can be talked through and do not happen as much anymore.  Contrary to popular belief students have a lot of fun here playing tug of war and chicken,  having dance contests, movie nights and other activities.  White Tiger shares open door holiday parties with the community to give back to the families of East Cobb.  My daughter was quite shy and could not speak in front of people, but is now confident with the help of Grand Master Seo.  He, and the staff, reinforced our instruction at home by helping her get use to her own voice, respond clearly to questions, and control her hands and posture when speaking.  She joined the Demo team and now performs Taekwondo routines in front of  a live audience!  Grand Master Seo is a kind hearted man who truly invests his heart and soul in his students.  The instructors are hardworking, dedicated, and fully engaged with students.  I have seen all kinds of students come through his program.  Children with ADD/ADHD, Down's Syndrome, shy closed off introverts, loud rambunctious extroverts, those looking to get in shape, those looking for a family activity, young and old  all coming together in this studio and learn true taekwondo in a safe, caring fun environment.   I would encourage anyone who is looking for a place to study taekwondo to come to White Tiger.  If you are looking for a  place to learn taekwondo this is it! read more

If you don't do what he wants, the kids pay the price. We decided not to renew, and he took it on the kids. He originally agreed to let them use his weapons for the few months left, but when the time came he just ignored our kids completely and acted as if nothing was going on. I could not believe my eyes! He wanted us to buy the weapons even though we were quitting. Since we did not renew the contract, our kids were banned to go to the Black Belt ceremony. Bad, very bad costumer service. read more

I have been a student at Moohan Martial Arts under Grand Master In Won Seo for a little over three years now. He truly comes with world class Tae Kwon Do credentials, and is quite an excellent instructor. I have no complaints in this regard. However, policies and schedules are subject to change - usually with little notice. This applies to policies that force students into extending the duration of their contracts, changes is testing schedules, and weekly class schedules. There also seems to be a significant amount of turnover of instructors. In my time as a student, eight instructors have left - a couple more if you count those who only worked for a couple weeks. I'm unsure as to why, but they don't seem to last more than a year or so. In summary, good instruction, but business practices leave a bit to be desired. Also note, there are two other Moohan Martial Arts locations in the Atlanta metro area. From what I understand, they are mostly independent schools. read more

I just started as a new instructor at Moohan Martial Arts about a month ago I have over 10 years of martial arts experience and I just have to say, it is an honor to work for 1 out of 2 of the only Grandmasters in Georgia. Grandmaster Seo is outstanding teacher and even better role-model. His School is extremely clean and organized and above all else Grandmaster has very high expectations for all of his students. It's all about getting your money, not about teaching you or your kids!!! Don't go there, I would not sign up again if I knew about Master Seo's policies!! There is really only one word that describes this place - GREED! My kids have been going there for a year, and I will definitely not be renewing our contract! Master Seo pulled our the kids aside to ask them what their parents do for a living and then proceeded to tell our kids that their parents "don't care about them and only want to save money" when we purchased jump-ropes from another place. He kept changing policies about the equipment and fees every time just so we would pay more for everything and anything!! He will take you to his office and tell you why he is the best instructor in the state, but meanwhile he is seeing the big dollar sign on your head.....Please do not make the same mistake as us and look for a place where they will actually care about something besides money..... read more
