Endured a horrific and seemingly unending ride home from the airport in a White Top Cab with Driver 415. In hindsight, I should have followed my gut and passed on that cab when the taxi line coordinator waved me to the next in the queue and I first set eyes on 415, who was furiously smoking while seated in the vehicle, small clouds of smoke emanating from the open window. In hindsight, I should have used Lyft. When I got into the vehicle, it reeked of cigarette smoke, like the bedroom of a lifelong, housebound chain smoker who prefers the privacy afforded by closed windows and drawn blinds. While devoid of debris, the interior of the car was extremely soiled and worn, maintaining ground-in dirt left by decades of riders. The area around the driver seat was scarred with cigarette burns as were the pants of the emaciated, taciturn operator. After I shared my destination, 415 started driving without using a GPS or asking for any clarification. Since my home is not in a commonly frequented area, his lack of questioning gave me pause. I inquired whether he wanted me to use my phone for directions. 415 declined. When I asked if he could provide a receipt, he remained silent, until I repeated the request. Being trapped in that cab felt like being the unwilling star of a slowly unfolding horror movie, being driven, I was increasingly convinced, to an unknown, yet doubtless torturous end. As I watched 415 periodically reach over and slap his left arm with his right, I wondered if this would be how it would end for me, in some traffic-backup-causing accident to be featured in the local news caused by the drifting of 415's thoughts to some opium den past. The air in the cab was so intolerable that I found myself sticking my head out of the window to gasp for breath. At red lights, hanging out of the window like a dog searching for scents, I waited for nearby drivers to acknowledge the fear and panic in my eyes. I compulsively looked at the remaining drive time on my phone. When we finally reached my home, I thanked God, quickly paid the fare and asked for a receipt. In reply, the cabbie got out of the vehicle without a word. I had to repeat the request outside the vehicle before he slowly drew a single xeroxed slip from a rubber-banded pack and handed it my way. All in all, an unspeakably unpleasant ride. Perhaps this experience would have been part of the adventure had I been traveling solo in an underdeveloped nation, but not what I expected in the DMV. This was BY FAR the worst cab ride we've ever had, with cab 416 A - today out of the DC Airport. Driver wouldn't accommodate a brief case in the front seat for leg room for passengers in the back, and argued it was for safety?? Scolded us for not having cash. Scolded us for the "way" we removed luggage and took offense to the question "Where are you from?" - completely started our business trip off on the wrong foot. This company is contributing to people's desire to use Uber and as of today, I'm done supporting the taxi industry. Train your people in customer service - I wish I could Rate this a zero. read more

Horrible experience. The dispatcher who answered said he had no cars to take our family to the airport even though I attempted to make the reservation 2 days before our trip He said 3:55 a.m. was too early. I changed it to 4:00 a.m. which he found agreeable. Then, when I said I had 5 pieces of luggage, he said he didn't have a car big enough. How on earth does this cab company even stay in business? We are in a major city and he has no staff available to take people to the airport. WOW. In most cities, people work hard to get clients. You would think if his cars were really this tiny, he would have the creativity to suggest two cars. Unreal. When I asked if he wanted me to call GreenGo Cab or the Yellow Taxi, he laughed at the GreenGo Cab. Interestingly, they were the only ones who were eager for my business. Edit: Note that I am literally signing up for Yelp in order to write THIS review. Please stay away from White Top Cab. I took a short ride from DCA to my home in Crystal City, but that was enough time to demonstrate the incompetence of this company. As echoed by those below, one star is not low enough for White Top Cab. My driver demonstrated little interest in his customer--leaving me to manage my bags on my own, and ignoring my attempts at small talk. While I wasn't impressed, that's all forgivable. But the ride quickly slid further downhill. Again, I was returning HOME, so of course I am well-acquainted with the area and recognized when the driver began taking detour routes. When I asked about the route, he reacted with hostility, even swearing at me. It got to the point where I felt threatened and wrote his number down (it's 451). I kept quiet from that point on, but he began running stop signs and speeding through the quiet neighborhood, making me even more uncomfortable. He also made clear that he didn't know where we were going and I should "feel free to stop me anytime." I was confused and frightened, and stopped him a couple houses down from my own as a safety precaution, and just to get out of the car. Terrible experience. We found a white top cab at a taxi stand in Old Town Alexandria, and that was a fine experience, no complaints. This review is for the dispatcher. We called them for a cab, was told 10-15 minutes. 20 minutes pass. We call back. We're THEN told that there aren't many cans in our location, that we should call a yellow cab. What. The. Hell. Why didn't they tell us this when we first called?? Never calling them again. We ended up using Uber. read more

Worst can ride ever. Took a detour route past my destination. $25 for a 5 mile cab ride. Before entering the cab I verified that he took credit card. When we arrived to my hotel, he busted out his old school credit card imprinter. Handed me the slip for me to fill out, though nothing was labeled so I didn't know what to fill in where. He was very rude the whole time, unsure if it was due to the fact that I was paying with a credit card or that he just hated his job. I would rather take the subway next time. read more

The Hilton at old town Alexandria called this cab for me and I specifically said I needed a cab that takes credit card. The can driver drove me to dc and said his credit card machine is not working. The fare came out to $31 and I told him that all I have is $25 cash. So he immediately took that and said that he charge the rest on my card using his manual credit card reader. I asked him why couldn't he just charge me by entire amount in he card and he said with the credit card manual reader, he would be charged 10% extra and would need to call the charge in. Do not trust this cab company since they do not send cabs with a working credit card machine and also do not trust the cab drivers. This is the worst cab company in the dc metro area. read more

The short version is that he yelled at me for wanting to pay with a credit card, gave me a big speech, called me a liar, and then once I arrived, snatched the card, and then through the credit card and receipt onto the floor in front of me. He was very disappointed that I was using a credit card, and when I told him to charge $13 for the ride plus tip, he charged $14 on my card! Trip from DCA to Old Town today. Driver (#416A) did not speak or acknowledge me when I said "hi, are you?" put my own suitcase in the trunk, got in the car or gave him the address. We nearly got in two separate accidents (one when he cut off an airport shuttle and the other when he misjudged a left turn and had to slam on the brakes) within a 15 minute journey. I needed to pay with my corporate card and the driver got nasty. Demanded cash, said "you should have told me" and when I told him that I'd specifically told the DCA dispatcher that I'd be paying with credit said "its me that's driving you, not the dispatcher." He FINALLY finishes running my card and asks me to fill in a blank form with my phone number (I put a non-working old mobile #). Then he holds up my card and the receipt, so I reach forward and take it from his hand. This is where it gets weird and hostile. He turns around in his seat and stares at me, and snarls "what are you doing, I was going to hand it back to you." And I'm like "what? sorry? ok, please pop the trunk" I get out, he gets out, I get my bag and say "have a nice day," and start walking away. He yells from several feet away "what do you want me to say to that? have a nice day?" And I just repeat, as I'm walking away "Ok, bye, have a nice day." And he stands, I kid you not, in the street behind his taxi still yelling (at me, though I'm across the street now). It went from mild bullying about the credit card to full on threatening - I considered calling the police. read more

This is a garbage cab company. I had some issues with Yellow Cab providing poor quality service so I thought I would give a smaller company a try. I thought that just perhaps they might offer a better level of service. Oh was I wrong. They ask a thousand questions about where you are going which seems really pointless to me. What does it matter where I am going. I tried just stating the area I am going to which is in the City of Alexandria which they serve and they press you for the exact address. Most cab companies that I ever call always focus on where I am- not where I am going. The customer service folks that answer the phone here have a real attitude about everything. I read a review of White Top Cab on Google or somewhere online and the person stated that the customer service person said F you and hung up. I thought it was BS but after calling White Top two times I learned it is probably the truth. On 07/21/2011 in weather over 100 degrees they sent a van cab to pick me up that had NO air conditioning. Me sitting in the back of a huge van and of course the windows in the back of a van cannot be opened. I called them on 07/22/2011 requesting a cab to pick me up at the Monaco Hotel- there were NO cabs in the cab stand out front. And the phone customer service person asked me a million questions about where I was. I stated 480 King St, Old Town, Monaco Hotel and she still did not understand where I was. Then given that the last cab they sent me had no air conditioning I thought maybe if I ask for air conditioning that things would work better for me. Wrong. The phone rep acted like I was some sort of snob or something. And guess what? No cab ever came for me. No phone call back either. Just me standing there wasting my time for nothing. When you call Yellow Cab they see your number on the caller ID and when they answer they go right into the pick up and mention the common pick up address on your account. When you call White Top cab you have to repeat your number two or three times, you have to practically give them directions to where you are, and you have to give them crazy details about where you are going. This is NOT efficient! I would not call them again- ever. If I am at the Metro station and I need a cab then I'll walk to the first non-White Top Cab. I highly advise anyone searching for an efficient and courteous cab company to stay away from White Top Cab! read more

Awful experience. Would not turn off the music, finally did after I insisted three times that down was not the same as off, then pulled up to his boss before even leaving DCA and told him I called him a name and he wasn't taking me anywhere. I said oh yes he was, so his boss made him take me, and he wouldn't get my stuff out, and as I walked away from the cab, he jacked the music up and yelled obscenities at me as he drove off. This is my first Yelp review. I was motivated to write it because of a White Top cabbie. After attending a baseball game that ran late (metro had closed) due to a rain delayed start, I had to take a cab home. So, I joined the line at the taxi stand. When my turn came, the cabbie who pulled up yelled out that he could only go to Virginia. "Well, that worked out well," I thought. I walked over and got in. Then things went south. The cabbie starts yelling for more people to join me in the cab, because he didn't want to carry a single fare to Arlington. A group of 4 (four!) came over and said they were going to Falls Church or somewhere. They saw I was already in the cab and walked back to the line. The cabbie then half turned to me and started yapping - I ought to give up my seat so he can take these other people home. (WTF?) Barring that, what is wrong with me that I won't sit in the front seat, so the other group (again, group of four) can sit in back (WTdoubleF??)? I was just like, "My money's as good as theirs, take me home." Then he made his final stand. The dreaded a**hole cabbie a**hole move: "Well, you're paying cash, right?" Oh bleepity bleep bleep. No, I was not paying cash. While I know DC and Arlington cabs are credit card equipped, I wasn't sure whether this company required it in their vehicles. Reading these reviews, I realize I should have stood my ground. Instead, I admitted defeat and surrendered the cab to a couple who were willing to pay cash. By that time, Uber's surge pricing was over and I ended up with a flawless ride home, but I woke up today still livid at this shoddy treatment. I do not understand why cabs don't like to pick up a single fare. I have come up against this before, although after some grumbling, they've driven me anyway. Not good. I called and requested a cab for a specifc time because we were wrapping up dinner and wouldn't be ready until a certain time. Instead of sending a cab at the requested time, they sent one right away. They called and I explained that we'd resquested a cab for a specific time. They called AGAIN, asking if we were coming out, still before the requested time. Then they left before the actual time rolled around. When got to airport his machine "declined" my credit card- both of them. So I had to use cash. When I checked my bags my credit card was fine. One star is not low enough for White Top Cab. The driver picked me us up at Falls Church and drove us to Dulles. He took my credit card but manually entered it and claimed it would not take the card. I then paid cash - $65. Later a charge for $53.95 appeared on the card, so he actually skimmed on his company and me for the tip was $8. If you read the other reviews for this company, it's a common problem. This is simply how these people do business. I'll never ride a cab in Alexandria again for the same company seems to run several lines there. I disputed it with the credit card company successfully. read more

Agree with all other reviewers who wish there was a zero star rating for this cab company. Got into the white top cab at DCA and immediately regretted it. Driver didn't help with my luggage and the car smelled like the driver had been chain smoking in it. It also wreaked of body odor. The driver must have known bc he rolled up all the windows except mine - even with the fresh air I couldn't breathe through my nose. When I got home my clothes and hair smelled of smoke and I had to immediately take a shower. Also, he was gesturing and talking to himself the whole ride in a way that made me concerned for my safety. In addition, the driver was angry that I wanted to pay by credit card and made a big deal of having to pull out the old school hand imprint credit card copier. If I ever see "white top" on a cab again I will gladly walk home instead. read more

I ordered a 4am taxi to the airport. Five minutes before the scheduled arrival time, they called and said they didn't have a taxi to dispatch and they had called Yellow Cab for me. I called Yellow Cab and they hadn't received the alleged call, but they said they could have a cab at my place in five minutes and someone was there in three minutes! Just use yellow cab next time. I'm only giving them one star because I must in order to leave a review. This was a disaster of a night !! I set up a reservation and pick up early in the day for a 6:15pm pick up to make sure there would be plenty of time to dispatch the call. They sent the cab 15 minutes late and it shows up to the wrong building. When I saw the cab at the building beside us I called the dispatcher (already upset because they were late) and told him to have the driver come over one building. The driver proceeds to pull out of the wrong building and.... TAKES OFF !! Leaving us to call the dispatcher again !! At which time he dispatches another cab which put us 30 minutes late to our dinner party. It gets better... I was told to get a cab home from the restaurant we just text our location to them and they would dispatch the return cab. NOPE !! I was told they don't go to that area for pick ups. So in conclusion they not only made us late, they left us stranded !! Lucky for us there was a car outside from another company that took us home. DO NOT TAKE A CHANCE WITH THIS COMPANY !! If I could give 0 stars I would. Traveling from DCA back home to Arlington yesterday. Taxi driver is going about 50 mph, pointing at trees, trying to turn around to talk to me. He finally looks back at the road and there is a bicyclist crossing in the cross walk. Slams on his brakes and we skid to a complete stop. I hit my head, flew against the front seat. Today I have severe neck pain and stiffness and spent my morning at the urgent care. Called to file a complaint with the taxi company and was told the manager won't be in until Monday. I will be calling them first thing Monday. Reckless driving at its finest! The driver needs to be watching the road--not gaping out the window. Avoid taxi 409A. Sunday, 9 Apr., I was waiting for a vehicle to pull out of a parking space at Wal-Mart in the Potomac Mills area. A White Top Cab pulled up behind me. No wanting him to have to wait I waved him - no reaction. The vehicle pulled out of the space and I was inching forward to pull in when the cab shot around me causing me to almost hit him and shot into the parking space. There is no way he did not see me. This was a deliberate action on his part with NO regard or consideration for another driver. Following this dangerous action he sat in the vehicle carrying on a phone conversation, refusing to acknowledge me. He cannot claim he was not there because I have a photo which is date and time stamped to prove he was; and I got a great view of the driver. Cab # 411A - VA H123171. What kind of company employs an individual who does that? I am a 63-y-o female with a metal knee with surgery scheduled for next month. Because of his asinine actions I was forced to find another parking space and walk much farther than necessary. This resulted in great pain and swelling of my knee. I promise you I will never use your company and will make everyone I know aware of this incident. Also, I am employed by the (Federal) Dept of Transportation and am certain if you do not take some form of disciplinary action against this individual DOT and VDOT can and will. read more
