We did the Middle Yough though White Water Adventures for a part of my brother's bachelor party. We had a group of 15 with ages ranging from 12 to 45. The set up was easy online. The communication was great throughout. Our guide was awesome. He was very knowledgeable and on top of the responsibilities of the tour. This is a great activity to push yourself, but not in a way that you will regret it the next day. A great time had by all! We had a great time with white water adventures. We did the middle youch because of the ages of some of our paddlers. It was a pleasant first time for most of them. The river is generally calm. Some bumps but no big waves. Lunch was smoked ham and turkey wrap. A cookie and an apple. Guide tried to make it more fun using the rafts as a slide, and also showing us a jumping rock. I bought a "refundable ticket" and was unable to get a refund for it. 1. Incoherent refund/cancellation policy. Could easily place it through AI and make it clear. 2. We loved our experience! Me and my boyfriend went spontaneously, and it was one of our top adventures. The rapids were great at 2 ft although we've both been before so next time we'll definitely be doing the Upper Yough. The tour guide Bryce was wonderful. He was good at steering, giving us options of how difficult we wanted it to be, knowledgeable, friendly and funny making for an all around good time. Ask them to tell you some dad jokes. read more

Planned a whitewater rafting trip for the first afternoon and then a Fallingwater tour the following morning before hitting the road again. What a great decision it was! I have been coming with a camp group to White Water Adventures for 10+ years now and have had several other individual rentals through White Water. This last trip we were on the river shortly after July 4th. White Water Adventures does a fantastic job of staying organized, teaching your group everything they need to know before going on the river, and taking care of all individuals while out on the water. Recently their policy has been to have a river guide in the raft with us to guide the boat versus having an assisted trip with guides in kayaks. This is good for all of our campers as it saves them from my poor captain skills, but also makes the trip a bit less stressful and more entertaining. Our boat's captain Dan did a fantastic job with the group we had. He kept the conversation entertaining and light, was able to skillfully get us through some interesting parts of the river, and even showed us a few neat tricks that we would not have been aware of or been able to do if we did not have guides with us. I'll start by saying I thought the guides were great. Friendly, helpful, & knowledgeable, they guided everyone through the rapids with directions, hand signals and hands on help when they could. The problem was the overbooked trip, just too many rafts and people. We did the lower Yough on July 2, we booked the 1:30 trip. Our trip had probably 20 rafts (maybe more) * 4-6 people per raft = 80-100 people. We started late because it took so long to get everyone situated with helmets and vests and paddles. They even had to get a 2nd bus for all the people. It was chaos. We had I think 4-6 guides assigned to us, it was hard to tell. After every rapids we were instructed to pull over and wait for everyone to get through before getting our instructions for the next set of rapids. It took forever and because the guide was yelling to all the rafts, some rafters weren't paying attention and talking over him, making him hard to hear. I frequently had no idea what I was supposed to be doing at the next set of rapids. Because there were so many rafts in our group they were launching close together, if a raft tipped over, which many did, the next in line crashed into them and then the next one and pretty soon it was a mess and impossible to avoid being the next raft ramming into the mess. We didn't finish until after 7. We were the last group done, and had been passed by the 3:30 group that launched after us. And lunch was not great, they tell you not to bring anything, but then you're trapped on the water for 5 hours without food or drink except the water & kool-aid at the lunch break midway. My bf and I brought a string sack anyways and some gatorade thank goodness, and used a caribiner to hook it to our raft and had no problems at all. Thank goodness I had something to drink to calm my nerves. I saw one other boat with a backback. My bf and I chose a 2 person raft called a shredder on the advice of the company, I expressed concern that perhaps we wouldn't be able to manage that on our own and we were assured by everyone we talked to that we would have no problem and in fact it would 'be a blast'. It was not a blast, my bf and I could not control the raft that well, and frequently felt like we had lost control and were just spinning down the rapids. At one point we hit a large rock and the guide had to pull us up on the rock to keep us from getting sucked under. I was terrified. I think they are negligent to have so many novice people out there without guides in the boats and the ability to keep us off the more dangerous rocks. 2 boats had non-English speaking people in them, they didn't follow directions at all (I don't think they understood the guides) and tipped at almost every rapids. One girl hurt her ankle and had to have ice applied after falling out and getting battered around. No one wanted to be by their boat because they caused other people to crash. So - while the guides were very nice and I'm very appreciate of them rescuing us, the company itself overbooked and put people in danger and kept us on the water too long. read more

We were given a leaky rental Duckie on the Middle Yough float. The floor bladder in the Ducky was flat and out of air within in a few minutes after launch. There was no way to go back. We were forced to sit in the Duckie bottom 3 or 4 inches lower than normal. This resulted in sitting on 4 inches of river water the whole way, with NO padding for our bottoms, hanging up on most rapids that should have been easy to slide over, and worse of all BOUNCING OUR BUTTS on every rock that was two to four inches below the surface. VERY PAINFUL. We were very lucky we were able to muscle over the rocks, not lose paddles or get separated from the boat. The consequences could have been much worse. When we finally arrived at take out, totally exhausted and Hypothermic, shivering and sore, we needed to stop at our hotel for a hot shower and change to dry clothes before returning our paddles. When I did arrive back at the shop, Ann was quite upset that we forced her to wait around a half hour for our return, even though they had picked up the Ducky and seen the condition of the flat bladder. No concern for our safety or comfort, no apology for renting faulty equipment. We will never use White Water Adventurers again, and I am pretty sure my wife will NEVER do a float trip on any river again. read more

We went towards the end of April and fortunately got beautiful weather. It was chilly in the morning so they gave us wet suites and a wind jacket which helped. Our guided tour guide was Dan and our kayak escort was Noah. Both of them did a great job keeping us safe while still letting us have the most adventure filled route! We even stopped at one section of the river to jump off a big rock which Dan recorded for us. Noah also taught us some valuable lessons on kayaking through rapids in case we ever wanted to pursue that in the future. Having Dan as our in raft guide was also super helpful because he knew exactly which routes to take/not to take. An advantage we wouldn't have had if we did not have a guide. We did lower yough and the rapids were intermediate. If you want something where you don't have to worry too much about falling out but still want a super fun time, I would suggest the lower yough although next time I think we are going to try the upper yough for more adrenaline! read more

What I like about White Water Adventures is that they are not a "cattle car" rafting company. They are a lot more down to earth then what I saw with the other outfits. I'm sure those outfits are fine, and WWA can accommodate large groups as well. Then again, maybe it had a lot to do with being lucky enough to have Shredder Mike as our guide along with Hanna. They not only does he guide for a living, but they also enjoy rafting and kayaking during their off hours as well. So they are actually sharing their passion for the sport with you. The check-in process was pretty straight forward, and the cost in line with the other outfits. I'm not totally exaggerating when I say that Mike knew every rock and bolder along the entire trip and provided some insight from personal experience and not from a pre-planned script. When it comes down to it, you can raft just for the fun of it (nothing wrong with that), or you can have a fun and really learn how to raft or kayak along with appreciating all it encompasses. Highly recommend the White Water Adventures team! Our group of 3 booked our trip with them for the Lower Yough for Labor Day weekend and were thrilled with every aspect of the adventure. First and foremost, our guide, Ben was THE BEST. Ben was competent, safe, kind, fun, and was great at keeping a pulse on the abilities and needs of the team. We shared the boat with another group of three and he had us all working as a team and getting to know each other in no time. For those new to rafting, the guide will basically steer the boat and give the team paddling direction to help keep the line he's determined to get the raft safely through the rapid. Ben was great at explaining what we needed to do and checking in with us once we got used to things as to what kind of experience we'd like to have on the next rapid. Ben was patient, clear, and mixed things up--- sometimes giving us time to just quietly enjoy the beauty of the river, and sometimes chatting about the river's features or giving us area recommendations. Everyone's idea of adventure is different, so it's hard to recommend which rafting trip might be a good fit, but for us, the Lower Yough was the perfect choice (we were first time rafters, but wanted a bit of a thrill). There was a great mix of excitement and also time to take in the river at a chill pace--- and even a stop for those who wanted to swim and/or climb/jump from a 20? ft boulder. For us, I think anything less challenging would have been a bit boring, and anything for intense might have been a bit much for the first time out. The whole staff at White Water Adventures was great and did a great job at keeping us safe and ensuring we had a blast. read more

A very dangerous and ill managed tour. We did the white water rafting on Lower Yough 3-4 level rapids on July 2nd. We got to the location on time but the it started 45mins late. They took us to launch site and we were introduced to the very rude instructor (Jake? Jud?) who clearly does not belong in the service industry. He was outright rude and was impatient to get started. Once we were in the water, the lack of training and initial instructions didn't help us and we bombarded into rocks at very high speed. The same was true with many in the group. Almost all the boats were struggling and we had barely reached the center. Our party had mostly beginners and lagged towards the end. The impatient trainer/guide (the same guy who did the orientation at the beginning) was outright rude and pushy. Then came the first big rapid. With barely any training, we crashed into the rock where the guy stood. Instead of helping, the guy kept screaming down, pulled the side rope of our raft and flipped us into the high speed water. This was beyond belief, the guy who was in charge of guiding us and giving us confidence just threw a temper tantrum and pushed us into the middle of a rapid. 2 in our gang hit against the rocks and had bruises. Two others including me got pulled towards the bottom and came back up. We were getting carried by the water at a high current, tiil a level headed guide decided to threw us a rope and pulled us in. They dragged us onto the shore. Now, this was beyond belief. Our raft was flipped into the water by a guide and we all had cuts, bruises. We decided, no more and wanted to call it quits. But the guide came back, his face red with rage and screamed at us to get back in the raft. Our hands were shivering from fear after the near drowning, but he wouldn't have any of it. We pleaded to have a guide with us (not him) coz we all were in a bad shape by then. He asked us to keep going and said he would have a guide later. By now, we were all panicking and were looking around for a way to even hike back, unfortunately there were none. We checked around with the other guides who were sympathetic but they didn't want to cross this dude, who they seemed to be terrified of. We looked around and one after the other the rafts capsized and many had cuts and bruises. We were so shaken by the whole experience, we could barely continue. We were getting mean glances and getting yelled at again by the same guy again. He finally decided to give us a guide if we promise to tip the person enough at the end. So that was it? It was about the tips? We gladly agreed, coz by then we just wanted to get home. We got a guide, who was very patient and understood our plight. She was helpful, supportive and knew how to be a guide, tutor. She got us through the remaining rapids with her expertise and got us safely back. This experience has taken away all our interest in white water rafting. Never suggest with such guides who shouldn't be in this profession, if they will throw a temper tantrum and put guests at risk. A ride to hell was a way to summarize our rafting experience with White Water Adventure on Sunday, July 2nd. Sadly it was not the food (which many complained about since all the sandwiches had ham in it), nor the water currents which made it a horrible experience, but it was the quality of the staff. Some people are not meant for customer facing jobs and it is apt for the group leader/top guide for our group on the lower yough, 9:30AM. The group leader was menacing and terrified everyone in the group. Though the website claims the tour is for novice onwards, the group leader clearly favored with amazing experience or decided to prepay for a guide. Everyone else were screamed at, yelled at and ordered to get moving. Quiet a few of our rafts were toppled over in the rapids and I heard of 2 instances were the group leader shoved them into the water for not "obeying his orders". We are talking about an adult guide bullying adult paying customers. Not sure if they want to stay in business. Definitely won't recommend as long as they keep such staff on board read more

I made reservations for our group via phone and it was an easy process. However, I wish the person who made the reservations had asked me if we had any dietary restrictions for lunch. Four of us were vegetarians and we could not eat the wrap that they provide for lunch. I don't prefer skipping my lunch and adjusting with an apple and a cookie. So, I am giving 4/5 for overall experience though rafting alone deserves a 5/5 rating. 4 out of 5 people in our group do not swim and for two of us, this is the first rafting experience. So, we decided to go for guided rafting. Our guide Shawn was amazing. He did a great job and we did not have any raft overturns during the rapids. This experience definitely created enthusiasm in me to plan for the next rafting trip without thinking about the overturns and survival efforts :) read more

We went July 5 got there for our trip 2 buses of camp kids pulled in. Got started on the trip we were one of the only rafts to do Dimple Rock and wait for the kids to portage through. We did not get to stop and do jump rock or any other stops. Basically rushed through. We were told the lunch would be at the end.... got to the end no lunch everyone disappeared. He took my family of 8 in a big raft down a super fast river (4.5 ft higher than normal). We took all of the challenging paths while the other rafts played it safe (snooze). I would give it four stars but I really can't because I had so much fun. The person selling the tickets at the main area was quite rude and didn't know her head from her ass but she didn't ruin my fun. As a matter of fact, I could have cared less about the ticket selling lady once I was on the raft. During the introduction to white water rafting, the guide/instructor was making sure everyone understood the guidelines, safety procedures, and of course how to paddle and instructions/hand signals. This part wasn't boring and the guy was high amusing and entertaining. He mentioned many times that they have a first aid kit handy too. My friend and I did Level 3 and it was a long adventure but fun. At some point, I became quite bored but that happens with me easily. We move as a group and we even stop as a group to have a complimentary lunch. We make our own sandwiches (they provide the meats, breads, condiments, etc), they provide us water and lemonade, as well as fruit. The Dimple course was my favorite! Our raft flipped and became stuck many times, which was amusing for my raft group but the guides weren't too happy. If I were to visit Somerset, PA again, I would definitely go white water rafting with this company again. read more

Wow. What a great experience. This was the first time that my friends and I had gone whitewater rafting. We had no idea what to expect. We didn't know if it would be hard. And we all heard stories of people falling out of the raft. After going on a rafting trip with White Water Adventurers, none of these worries were issues. The trips are very well organized and the guides are very knowledgable. There was a perfect balance of adventure with the knowledge that there were several experts with you on the river, who could help you/save you if you ended up outside your raft. Never was there a time when it felt unsafe. We did the Lower Yough trip. I thought that this was a great trip for beginners - the rapids are Class III with a small section of Class IV, which was fun but not overwhelming. The trip was about 5 hours and each set of rapids was thrilling. Definitely a great company to book a day trip with. read more

I'd rafted twice before I chose to go rafting on Lower Youghiogheny, Intermediate level, which is supposed to be most popular for first timers and for folks not wanting an extreme adventure. Since I had some first timers with me, we decided to go with a guide in our raft. The river has good level III rapids and some level 4. However, this package had lots of breaks coz our guide was also responsible for other unguided rafts. So that made the experience not so exciting. In my earlier rafting ventures, our guide used to be exclusively for us and we used to raft non-stop. However, here, there were stops after almost every rapid and we had to wait for the other unguided rafts to come along. That was a total kill joy. Moreover, our guide was a little reserved and would not allow us to have the extra bit of adventure that we wanted to have. In the end, we really regretted paying $100 extra for a guide in our raft. All the guides are efficient and give nice hand signals. So, if you have an experienced rafter in your raft, you don't really need a guide if you are adventurous and want to have fun. On the flip side, our guide played it very safe. So there was less adventure and more safety. You guys can make your pick. Overall, a satisfactory trip, however, the numerous breaks were really a big setback ! read more

Our group of 7 booked a guided tour for Labor Day weekend. Three of us had been whitewater rafting 3 other times, including on serious rivers out west, so we chose the option where we captain our own raft. We had a great time - the guides on the kayaks and standing on the rocks at critical points did a good job giving us instructions, and all the rafts (including us) helped each other out retrieving paddles and shoes as they escaped people's grasps. We learned lots about teamwork and water currents and feel a sense of accomplishment. The river is amazing, and the scenery beautiful. The lunch was good and the guides were all helpful and cheerful. It was a big crowd of rafters, but it felt well-managed. I was glad for the times we all pulled to the side for instructions. We needed to catch our breath and rest our muscles, and take a look around. The staff at the parking area was also friendly and efficient. In retrospect, the Yough is a more challenging river than I'd realized, and we would have fewer sore muscles if we'd paid for the guide in the boat with us. If we go again (and we probably will), we'll probably chose to captain our own raft again. But we probably should've paid for the guide in our boat this first time down this river. read more

I bought the Taste of Yough rafting package for my husband's birthday. We had the 8:30am tour on August 17, 2019. Our guide, Jake was phenomenal. We ended up being the only 2 on the excursion. We loved every second having the one on one attention. Jake was very informative from the beginning with safety rules to explaining the area's history. We got to visit Cucumber Falls and the Natural Water Slides. It was such a pretty day! When we finished rafting, the store/check in area was packed with people about to start the next tour, because of this I'd strongly suggest going early in the morning if you can.. This is a great rafting company for people of all levels. We came with a huge group of first-timers and they accommodated all of us really well. They had guides in kayaks leading us through all of the rapids and individuals standing on rocks giving us signals to paddle more or in different directions. Four of us did the lower Yough on Sunday June 24th, with our guide Thomas. WWA were the only ones willing to take us out after 3 pm (all others had stopped their services at 2 pm). We were the only group rafting (saw a few kayakers on the way) so we got the private VIP treatment, as Thomas put it! Thomas was friendly, knowledgable, had a great sense of humor, and most importantly - made sure to keep us safe throughout the entire trip! One of us fell in the water and Thomas pulled our friend back up with a blink of an eye. If you go white water rafting without expecting to get wet, slip in, slip out...then you might not be ready for the adventure!
