This place was recommended by a friend, once I saw the reviews I was convinced of their quality. Definitely not the cheapest solution to a trimming need, however, I was very interested in an insured provider as we were removing limbs very near the house and near solar panels. The crew was extremely professional and friendly. They do a tremendous job at cleanup, the care they take on dropping limbs near property is exceptional. It's like one minute to sufficiently secure branches and 10 seconds to cut them, that is the way quality work is done. It's all in the preparation. I would certainly use them again on trimming needs that are beyond my capability. They were flexible when scheduling to leave me, manageable sized branches for me to cut up for wood and therefore were able to discount the price some. I highly recommend Whit's Turn Tree Care because of its knowledge and integrity. I called four tree companies to give me estimates to top and trim a line of olive trees. Henry Curtis of Whit's Turn told me how my gardener could regularly trim the trees once they have been topped so that I would not need topping in the future. They came in to remove a couple trees. we were told they would leave one lane of travel open to get past them. They blocked the complete roadway and nobody was allowed to pass for an hour and a half. Many people had to turn around and make other plans. When the employees were asked about what was happening, they were very rude and one even yelled at a car. We decided to split this service with our neighbor, hoping to bring down the cost etc. We were charged around $2,200 to trim two white oak trees. They were out for just under 5 hours (for 3 white oak), and when asked for a breakdown of what was done, was told that's just how much it cost. No specifics and no call back from Henry, but they call for payment. if you want to pay 300-400 an hour to trim a tree, these are your guys. I've had tree service before, never for this amount of money. I won't be using them again. read more

Seriously call Whit's first and don't waste your time with other contractors missed appointments and apples to orange quotes. Whit's rocks, they didn't flinch when, on take down day, we were all surprised with a cement filled tree. Not kidding, a cement filled tree. Both Whit's crew and I knew the tree had a bee hive and lots and lots of embedded nails none of us knew it was filled with cement. Cement dulled the first chainsaw blade about 10 feet off the ground in the previously hacked limb containing the beehive. How, when or why cement made it into the tree is unknown. What is now known is that the cement extended below ground level. As contracted Whit's took the tree down to ground level. Whit's also removed the bee and honeycomb filled limb which they took back to their shop where they have a box hive in hopes to accommodate a bee location. And, yes, I did attempt to re-home the bees, not a swarm, 10 feet off the ground, no takers. Check out the cement filled stump photo prior to the complete removal. Whit's staff kept me informed at all times and cleaned up after themselves, they rock. read more

Whit came out for the estimate. He took his time to go over all my options and explained the process. On the day of the trim (two large oaks)...Henry and his "A Team" came out. They were on time, professional and knew what they were doing. We had another company come out a few years ago and they were a hot mess. Henry and his team used all safety precautions but were quick and efficiant. They cleaned up and stacked the wood in a place so it wasn't in the way. We will need more work done later next year and I will be calling Whit's Turn for sure. read more

I contacted Whit's Turn based on a referral from a landscaping contractor. We have a row of 10 eugenia trees along our backyard fence that I wanted topped. I've had this done twice before but neither of the people who had previously done the work were readily available. For some reason the estimator from Whit's Turn didn't give me an initial good vibe so I casually asked him what type of trees were in our backyard. He said he had no idea and then commented that there are so many different types of trees in San Luis Obispo county that he can't know them all. Since he is the professional tree "guy" I was somewhat taken aback. I proceeded to explain what I wanted done. He seemed perplexed by how to do the job thinking he would need to use some type of specialized equipment (e.g. cherry picker) that he wouldn't be able to get into our backyard. I explained that the work was previously done with either a hand saw or small chain saw from a three pronged orchard ladder. He eventually gave me an estimate that was nearly triple of what we had paid before. As he was leaving our neighbor waived him over to get an estimate on getting his palm trees pruned. After the estimator left, my neighbor came over and was astonished by how much Whit's Turn wanted to do his job. In hindsight I suspect that this company doesn't want to be bothered with smaller residential tree trimming work or if they do they want a premium. That business model is totally okay - but it doesn't work for me. read more

The estimator that they sent was more of a teller than a listener. Cut me off in mid sentence everytime I started to talk. Very little personal skill and no effort made in trying to understand what I wanted. But, I accepted their offer that was nearly double what they charged 4 years earlier when they trimmed this same tree. Then I called to schedule the appointment for the work to be done on my day off. They called the night before my appointment and said I needed to reschedule because they got busy and were behind schedule. The workers did a good job and they are courteous and professional as tree trimmers go but they were done in an hour and I could have (should have) done what they did with a pole saw pruner from the ground and hauled everything they trimmed from my tree in the bed of my Toyota Tacoma to the dump for $20. In summary, rude estimator, unreliable appointment, one third the work compared to 4 years ago for nearly twice the price. They do have a lot of nice new expensive equipment that they brought along but didn't use. read more

Office help is polite and efficient. Estimator appointment not. It was set for today at 8am. I got up early to be ready. Office called at 8:15 to say he would be at my house at 9am, he got tied up or something. Ok, stuff happens. No show again so I called the office at 9:25 to inquire and was told he was hauling a trailer and that must have slowed him down. She offered to call him, but I asked that he call me directly which he did. Well, he was still at least 25 minutes away and did not sound like he was on top of things at all. So, I cancelled and let the office know. If Whit's cannot send their best people out for the estimates (our first contact with the co.) then, really, don't bother at all. It does not bode well for the business, and for me, it is an aggravating waste of an otherwise perfectly good morning. read more

We had a representative from Wit's come out to our home to give us an estimate for removing several small stumps. He was prompt and courteous. We decided to go with Wit's and have them remove the stumps. A few days later, one man and a large machine showed up. He ground up half of our stumps and then told me he could not do the rest of them. When asked why, he said the job was under bid and somebody didn't know what they were doing. He further related that the company was losing money on this job and "somebody" would come back to finish the work. A couple weeks later, on Saturday, a small crew showed up and worked on the remaining stumps. They managed to get the majority of what was left removed. I finished the job myself after they left. As the crew was preparing to leave, I found one stump had been hidden with dirt. Upon asking why they weren't removing this last stump, I was told that they didn't have the right tools and then they left. I called the office and explained what was going on. I was told somebody would be out to have a look. Two weeks later, somebody showed up while I wasn't home and removed the majority of the last stump. Once again, I finished the job with a shovel. Based on other reviews, Wit's is very capable of doing good work, however in my case there were a few issues primarily with communication. Other than that, the finished work was acceptable. In the end, Whit's made things right and refunded my money. I would give them another chance when I need more work done on my property. read more

Tony, the estimator arrived on time and gave me a reasonable estimate. The front office got the quote out to me the next day and a couple weeks later arrived on time for the scheduled work. Tony, Isaiah, Abraham, Joe and Omar did a terrific job hand clearing brush on a very steep hill. They were hard workers but didn't rush and did a thorough, professional job lifting the manzanitas on the hill, trimming out the dead wood, and cutting the chamise down to two feet.
